Zero Degrees Cardiff Reviews
Ad | My regular readers will know that I’m a food snob. I’m not a fan of chain restaurants where they churn out the same tired menu, which is usually deep-fried or popped in the microwave for quick service. So, when Cardiff Zero Degrees reached out to me to try the new menu, I wasn’t sure it was for me.
I was certainly intrigued by the microbrewery, having walked past the windows and seen the vast tanks thousands of times. But would the food be the same old generic beige which had recently been defrosted?
Zero Degrees Menu
What is not apparent from the menu or website is that the majority of the food is made onsite. The team makes the dough for the pizza from a secret recipe. The flour is from Naples, and the dough has been proven for 24 hours. The toppings, where possible, are from local suppliers.
So, what did I try?
Starters

A selection of starters was brought for us to try. Baked Dough Balls (using the same dough as the pizza) were served with garlic butter and chilli oil. The garlic butter really packs a punch โ and was loved by both of us. Wild garlic was hand-mixed into the butter, leaving a robust, garlicky burn on your tongue. The chilli oil was pretty tasteless in comparison.
Also, the Beer Battered Cajun King Prawns uses the brewery’s own Bohemian Czech Pilsner. I love prawns; they are usually my go-to order on a menu. However, they were a bit of a disappointment in the flavour department. However, the batter was perfectly cooked. There was no soggy middle, and the prawns were soft and juicy.
The biggest surprise was the Bruschetta. It is a simple dish that can be bland and boring. The bread was crispy and light, with fresh tomatoes bursting with sweetness and olives, adding additional flavour and texture. The garlic and basil oil brought it together without overpowering the other ingredients.

Starters range from ยฃ5.25 to ยฃ8.25 for single portions. They can also be purchased as sharers from ยฃ9.25 to ยฃ13.25.
Main Course
It was time to try the award-winning wood-fired pizzas!

Up first was the BBQ Chicken, which had a crispy crust topped with thinly sliced red onions and creamy fior di latte mozzarella. A sprinkle of smoked cheese adds depth and richness, while fresh coriander lends a burst of herbal freshness.
True to its name, the Carnivoro pizza is a carnivore’s dream come true. This meaty masterpiece features a medley of bold flavours, starting with a classic tomato sauce base and a generous scattering of pepperoni, fennel sausage, and prosciutto cotto. Shaved parmesan adds a sharp, nutty finish, while fresh basil leaves provide a pop of herbal brightness.
For those seeking a lighter, more veggie-centric option, the Wood Roasted Vegetables pizza is sure to delight. It was my favourite! This colourful creation showcases a vibrant array of roasted vegetables, including tender aubergine, courgette, and sweet roasted mixed peppers, complemented by the sweet tanginess of sundried tomatoes and the not-so-subtle kick of garlic.
You can swap to vegan cheese or a gluten-free pizza base if needed. The individual pizzas can also be made as a calzone on request!
If pizza isn’t your thing, there’s also pasta and risotto dishes. These include carbonara, arrabiata and Bolognese. I would love to try the teriyaki chicken stir-fry with noodles, carrots, spring onions, cashew nuts, mangetout, chillies, red peppers and fried shallots. For those who want a lighter dish, there’s a classic Caesar salad or BBQ chicken with ranch dressing.

Cardiff Microbrewery
At Zerodegrees, beer is more than just a beverage. With their onsite microbrewery, they have mastered the craft of creating drinks. There is an impressive selection of handcrafted beers. Whether you’re a fan of hoppy IPAs, rich stouts, or crisp lagers, you’ll find a brew to suit your taste.

There is a trio of crowd-pleasing brews, each with their own distinct personality. The most popular choice is The Bohemian, a classic pilsner that is crisp, clean and refreshing. This golden-hued drink has a malt sweetness and a slight bitterness from the hops, making it easy to drink.
The Downtown is an American-style pale ale with a vibrant amber hue, citrusy hops, and caramel malt sweetness. An ale isn’t for my taste palette, but the boyfriend found it refreshing and satisfying, pairing perfectly with a hearty pizza. The Mango Beer is a tropical-infused delight that captures the essence of summer in a sip. It is a refreshing, unique brew with ripe mango flavour and a hit of tartness.
The biggest surprise for me was the special Low Altitude Flight, an alcohol-free beer. I could drink it all night! And now I know I wouldn’t have a hangover, too. It blended premium tonic water with a tang of citrus and an infusion of botanicals.
What sets this microbrewery apart is its commitment to quality and innovation. It’s a labour of love; the Master Brewer spends up to 10 hours per day creating these drinks from scratch, from the fermentation and conditioning stages.

The Ambiance
As if the Grade II listed building wasn’t interesting enough, the space effortlessly blends industrial with warmth, creating a welcoming atmosphere where you can relax and unwind. Visiting on a blustery Tuesday night in January, the bar was empty, and I mean empty. Another three patrons came in during our meal, but I understand that it truly comes alive on match days.
