I’ve never been to Thailand and don’t claim to be an expert on the food on offer. But I know what great food tastes like. From sticky rice bowls to their locally famous rotis, Brother Thai‘s menu is packed with rich and diverse flavours that will leave your taste buds craving more. Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or looking for a memorable dining experience, this restaurant is a perfect destination. I’ve been wanting to do this restaurant review for some time.

There’s no shortage of Thai restaurants in Cardiff. Among the favourites is Brother Thai, which started as a street food trader turning up at pop-up events. Now with a permanent restaurant on Whitchurch Road, fans can now get a regular food fix.

You can expect simple, casual dining; with white walls, black accents and wooden tables. You can peek into the open kitchen at the end of the restaurant and watch as food is prepared. There’s no need to arrive in your Sunday best unless you want to. The Brother Thai restaurant menu is also unpretentious, with Thai rotis and rice bowls.

Brother Thai Reviews

Like street food, but hate standing up?

Of course, I had to get the famous sticky beef roti. The roti itself is warm and crispy and is packed with soft meat in a sticky, spicy sweet sauce. It is topped with pickled cucumber and a drizzle of sriracha sauce. Be prepared to get messy; you’re bound to get sauce on your fingers as the filling bursts over the sides as you bite it.

It does have a kick to it! My friend, who only likes mild to medium curries, couldn’t eat it all because of the spice – even though she loved it. It had the perfect scorch factor for me, any hotter, and I would have done the same. If you have an appetite, you can have one to yourself and a rice bowl. If you don’t, perhaps ask the team if they can cut them in half so you can share?

Brother Thai Cardiff — *Sticky beef roti*

I had Pad Krapao, stir-fried chicken with herbs topped with a crispy soft egg for my main. The chicken falls apart in your mouth but somehow retains its bite and flavour. It is mixed with green beans, chilli, herbs and Thai basil in a dark sauce. The Jasmine rice soaks this up perfectly, whilst the fried egg gives additional crunch and gooey yolk.

The girls tucked into Thai fried chicken satay and red curry respectfully. All three bowls were cleared, bellies utterly satisfied but wishing we had room for more. Bravo, Brother Thai Whitchurch! The meal cost £29 for the roti, rice bowl and two drinks. Bargain!

Brother Thai Menu – Drinks

There’s a selection of bottled beers (no cider – boo!), wines, cocktails and mocktails. I enjoyed a Chang, a Thai light beer with floral notes. Typically, it accompanied the spicy food well, helping calm the burning sensation.

The cocktails are popular. The Lychee Longtime is a favourite; the gin-based drink is refreshing whilst not being too sweet. There’s tequila, spiced rum, amaretto and coconut rum on the menu, alongside a Mekhong Sour, a Thai spirit with aquafaba and lemon.

Sit in the Garden

It’s highly recommended that you book online. At times getting a table can be tricky. There may be a few walk in’s available, or if it is a nice day, sit in the garden. It’s a beautiful spot, perfect for enjoying stunning food in the sunshine. This area is also dog-friendly.

Brother Thai Takeaway

Unfortunately, Brother Thai does not offer a takeaway service. However, we were asked if we wanted our leftovers boxed up.

The perfect Cardiff foodie present has to be a voucher for Brother Thai. They are available in £25 demonisations. The ideal amount for a feast!

Brother Thai Gluten Free

For those who need gluten-free options, these are clearly marked on the menu, such as the side dishes and Khua King, a southern Thai fried pork dish in a hot curry sauce served with jasmine rice and a crispy fried egg. However, the disclaimer says that whilst the dish is gluten-free, it may be cooked in the same oil as foods containing gluten. So, if this is an issue for you, please check before you go.

Brother Thai Vegan

For those looking for vegan options, Brother Thai doesn’t disappoint. There are two options on the roti menu, roasted jackfruit or sticky seitan. There’s crispy mushroom laab, spicy waterfall salad, and tender stems Thai num prik from the side plates. Vegans can also enjoy seitan satay from the rice bowls and salted caramel ice cream as a dessert.
