It was about time I reviewed my local pub. However, I do have some reservations about it because, at times, it can be challenging to get a table due to its popularity. It takes about 25 minutes to walk from my house to Gwaelod. If we’re making a night of it, there are two other pubs to stumble into on the way home. Don’t panic, they have a small car park just behind the pub, or you can find parking in the village if you want to avoid walking.

Gwaelod y Garth is what I call a traditional country pub. It is a stone building with low beamed ceilings, flagstone floors, open log fires and plenty of outdoor seating in the front courtyard. Alongside locals and regulars, it welcomes cyclists, dog walkers and hikers who’ve climbed Garth Hill. The pub is cosy and welcoming, and it serves incredible homemade food.
Gwaelod y Garth Inn Sunday Lunch
I hate eating out on a Sunday. I’m very particular when it comes to my Sunday roast. I need crispy roast potatoes, more than one, a homemade Yorkshire pudding, and soft veg. It’s a personal choice, we all have them, but I understand the most want it al-dente.
I generally go for beef, and I like it cooked medium. Most of the time, pubs serving Sunday roasts have slow-cooked the meat. Then, whilst enjoyable, you only get a sliver on your plate. Gwaelod y Garth is one of the pubs that do Sunday lunch, and they do it well. They give you a choice on how you’d like your beef cooked, rare, medium or well done.
The price tag is more than some of the Sunday roasts in Cardiff City Centre. However, you’re going to get a decent portion. There’s a proper amount of meat, roasties and a Yorkie. Vegetables are served family style. It does depend on what’s in season, but on my last visit, I had cabbage, carrots, peas and – my favourite – cauliflower cheese. All are served with a jug of gravy and condiments. Again, I don’t care what meat I have; I need mint sauce on my roast dinner.
The beef roast cost £15, and the boys had the full works (with all of the meat selection and a pig in blanket) for £19. You can add on extras too like potatoes, Yorkshire’s and stuffing. It’s a massive portion! Trust me; I have a big appetite. It’s so tasty; I could have licked the plate!
Don’t forget your Dogs Dinner
Gwaelod is one of the most incredibly dog friendly pubs in Cardiff. Ivan, our rescue dog, has become a local celebrity. Well, the staff know him. They often give him treats from behind the bar or tidbits from the kitchen. However, the dog dinner is a speciality on the Gwaelod y Garth pub menu. Your four-legged friend can eat sausages and gravy whilst you’re tucking into your own food. Ivan loves it!
When booking, please mention that you’re bringing your dog because they are only welcome downstairs. The upstairs restaurant is the only place they can’t go.
There are plenty of water bowls throughout the pub, and the staff are happy to fill up one you’ve brought yourself. Dog biscuits are behind the bar; you can even purchase a Gwaelod y Garth bandana.
Car Park Carvery
Don’t want a full roast dinner? You can buy a hot roast roll from the car park every Sunday from midday. It includes a selection of meats and their accompaniments, such as brisket of beef with horseradish, roast turkey and cranberry, shoulder of pork and apple sauce or Glamorgan sausage and plum chutney. These are served with roasties and gravy. You can eat in or take them away.
Gwaelod y Garth Inn Reviews
Of course, the Welsh Inn serves more than Sunday lunch. The menu is small, seasonal and, more importantly, local. Meat is reared on nearby farms, fresh fish from local fishmongers and locally baked bread are all transformed into hearty dishes. The team even offer a produce swap. If you have a garden and grow, feel free to take what you won’t use, and you can swap it for drinks tokens. It’s called Veggies for Bevvies.
The specials board is constantly updated, ensuring even more choice alongside the GYG burger, lasagne and fish and chips. Vegetarians and vegans are also catered to, and a children’s menu also exists. Not forgetting the Gwaelod y Garth Christmas Menu, which will get you in the festive spirit.
If you love cask ales and proper cider, there’s a fantastic array, plus lager, an impressive wine list, soft drinks and spirits. There are even cocktails and long drinks. I love the GYG spritzer in the summer.
Events at Gwaelod y Garth
Throughout the month, there’s a bi-weekly quiz night in Cardiff, stand-up comedy nights and live music on Sundays. Occasionally there are one-off bistro events with a set menu and, if you want, accompanying drinks. On Bank Holidays (if the weather is on our side), there are BBQs in the car park where you can get burgers or hotdogs.
The annual Sausage and Cider Festival is always marked in my social calendar. The car park is transformed and has an outdoor live music stage, delicious cider and gorgeous sausages. You need a ticket to the event. Then when you arrive, you buy tokens, which can be used to purchase food and drink.

You can stay at Gwaelod y Garth! The 4-star rooms have all the amenities you want from a staycation – desk, TV, hairdryer etc. After exploring Cardiff or a strenuous walk up the mountain, you can sink into the luxurious beds.
