Everything you need to know about Tonight Josephine Cardiff

Ad | If you haven’t heard the news already, Tonight Josephine has landed in Cardiff. The bright pink entrance can be found on Caroline Street in the old Charleston’s Steakhouse venue. I have a hilarious garlic bread story from here, but that might be for another time! Anyway, here’s everything you need to know about the new cocktail bar in Cardiff, Tonight Josephine Cardiff.

Tonight Josephine Cardiff Reviews

I’ve got to be honest, when the news that Tonight Josephine was opening hit my socials, I wasn’t that bothered. I hadn’t heard of the brand before, and all I could think was, “Do we need another neon Instagram bar?” Don’t get me wrong, I love going out to the cocktail bars in Cardiff. But I also love an old man pub, where everything is brown, and I can enjoy a beer.

It was the extravagant bottomless brunches that quickly changed my mind. Even before the doors opened, I had booked a table of 10 at the Spice Up Your Brunch for my birthday in May. An afternoon of 90s nostalgia hosted by 3 spicy drag queens, a brunch dish, and 2 hours of bottomless drinks. Yes, please?! Other themes include Moulin Rouge, Mamma Mia and Pop Icons. I do love bottomless brunch!

What did I think on my first visit?

Hello Josephine!

My first visit was late at night (or was it early morning?) after being to By Order Of… at Depot. Was the bar going to be more than an Instagram-worthy interior? After a night of dancing and not wearing heels for 2 years during the lockdown, the stairs were challenging. It felt like a hike up Pen-y-Fan. However, I conquered them.

Cardiff Tonight Josephine Launch Night

I popped along to the launch party on Wednesday, 20 April 2022. The venue is across two floors and can fit just under 300 people altogether. The walls are acid-green neon, and vibrant pink girl power vinyls can be seen in every direction. There’s plenty of standing (dancing) space and booth and poser seating.

Tonight Josephine is the perfect Cardiff bar for your girl gang to meet up. Gentlemen are obviously welcome too, but they’ll need to be as fearless (or fabulous) as the ladies to get in. I worried about the lavish cocktail menu. As someone who detests gin, this is usually the heavy focus of the millennial menu. The list has over 30 to choose from. There are the gin drinks, as well as vodka, martinis, spritz and my favourite, the rum cocktail. I particularly loved the Zombie with three types of rum and Rum Bongo for a sweeter summer drink. Non-drinkers can also get involved as there are plenty of mocktails too.

The menu is as loud as the music. My ideal soundtrack of 90s and 00s pop. Think SClub, NSync, Britney, Christina and Beyonce. Step into the bathroom, and you’ll find even more attitude. Police mugshots of rule-breaking celebrities adorn the doors. So, if you’ve ever wanted a picture with Lindsay Lohan, here is your chance. The Hollywood mirrors are fantastic for touching up your lipstick (and showing the old lady cracks that have appeared on my face).

Will I go again? Sure! Absolutely! I can see it being a top spot for birthday parties and hen dos. The cocktails, although divine, were expensive. So, I’d only be having them during the 2-4-1 or happy hour to pull me in. Otherwise, my first port of call would be one of the other cocktail bars in Cardiff. However, I can see it being a fun place to dance the night away. Being on Chippy Lane, you don’t have far to stumble to get your end of the night grub before getting in a taxi home.

Tonight Josephine Bottomless Brunch Review

Eight of us attended the Spice Girls themed bottomless drag brunch for my birthday. The event was brilliant fun, and we all enjoyed it! It’s full-on as soon as the event starts. The spicy drag queens were brilliant fun.

However, there were a few things that could have been improved. For £49, I would have liked my food on a plate with proper cutlery rather than cardboard. Eating before going is probably best because the tiny portion will not soak up any alcohol. Mine was also cold. You have to pre-order; on the menu was a grilled halloumi burger, jerked chicken fillets, smashed avocado on baked ciabatta or a slow-cooked BBQ pulled pork burger.

Also, you only get two jugs of cocktails at a time. Which is great if you’re all drinking the same thing. We all drink different options, so it did become a waiting game. They aren’t also replenished quickly enough. It’s the least tipsy I’ve ever been leaving a bottomless brunch.

When the event ended, we were shepherded out of the room and weren’t allowed to take our drinks with us! My main grumble was that I informed the staff on arrival that one of the girls doesn’t drink, and she had 1 mocktail, 1 faux Prosecco and 2 diet cokes – and that’s because she went to the bar to ask. These are only niggles; I’m sure as the team do more of these events, they can be ironed out! I would recommend it to others, especially if you’re celebrating a birthday, hen do etc!

There are other themes such as girl bands, Harry Styles, Mamma Mia, pop icons and Beyonce. You can even do a Friday night brunch.

Who are Tonight Josephine?

Tonight Josephine is one of the brands in The Adventure Bar Group. It is their first bar in Wales. Tonight Josephine London and Birmingham have amassed a legion of fans. This is clear from their 80,000 engaged followers on Instagram. Their motto is “well behaved women don’t make history“, which is right up my street, as I hate following the rules. The group’s other bars include Blame Gloria, The Escapologist, Bar Elba, Nikki’s Bar and Luna Springs.

Tonight Josephine is inspired by the first Empress of France, Josephine de Beauharnais, Napoleon’s famed nineteenth-century party animal and wife. She was intelligent, beautiful, and talked her way out of her appointment with the guillotine. She also didn’t care what people thought of her, an attitude that the bar has kept alive.
