Best Pub Quiz in Cardiff

I’m not the brightest penny in the till, but I enjoy a quiz night. It often brings out the “best” bits of my personality, such as being over-competitive, loud and argumentative. But that’s what makes a great pub quiz, right?! 

Quiz Nights have long been a beloved weeknight tradition, offering a perfect blend of entertainment, camaraderie, and intellectual challenge. From pop culture and history to sports and science, the topics covered during these quizzes are diverse.

Putting together this list of quiz nights in Cardiff was difficult! Who knew it would be hard to out where and when the pubs host their quiz nights? Their websites aren’t always up to date, and there is limited information on social media. I had to scour the internet and make some calls. I’m sure some have been missed; if you know of any regular quizzes, please get in touch.


Pub Quiz Cardiff Monday

Pontcanna Inn

The weekly quiz at the Pontcanna Inn on Cathedral Road takes place Mondays from 6.45pm until 9pm. It is £2 per person, and you can win a £100 bar tab. You can expect general knowledge or the occasional specific theme, such as Friends and a Gavin and Stacey pub quiz. A maximum of 6 in a team.

Head of Steam

The first of the quiz nights in Cardiff city centre on John Street is Head of Steam. Starting at 8pm on Monday nights. It is £1 per brain with a maximum team of 8 players. Also, get 2 for £15 on burgers, including chicken, beef and vegan.

Juno Lounge

Juno Lounge in Roath hosts a quiz night every Monday. It starts at 7pm. Entry is £2 per person, with a maximum of 6 per team. £1 goes to their chosen charity and the other to the prize pot.

Cardiff Pub Quiz Tuesday

Pen and Wig Cardiff Pub Quiz

The Pen and Wig is a 3-minute walk from Queen Street train station. Every Tuesday at 7.45pm is a quiz with a £50 cash prize. Often it’s themed, and has included DC vs Marvel, Love Island and Harry Potter. Entry is £1 per person.

Getting around Cardiff has never been easier

Transport for Wales now offers Multiflex, which gives you 12 journeys for the same price as 5 returns. With stops in Taffs Well, Radyr, Whitchurch, Llandaff North, Cathays, two in the city centre – Queen Street and Cardiff Central – plus Cardiff Bay. And, who doesn’t want to save money to spend on quiz nights in Cardiff?

Heathcock

The Llandaff pub quiz at The Heathcock is on the last Tuesday of every month. It costs £2 per person, with the money going to a local charity. It starts at 7pm. Teams are for a maximum of 6 people.

Brewhouse & Kitchen

The microbrewery, Brewhouse & Kitchen, opposite the entrance to Sophia Gardens, hosts a Tuesday quiz at 8pm. Registration starts at 7pm and is £1 per head. There are 5 rounds, including a picture round. You can even have the questions read out in Welsh, as the host is bilingual. The winner gets a 9 pint keg and the weekly jackpot.

I don’t mean to brag, but my team, “The Undatable, plus three and a dog”, currently has the highest winning score of 82%.

The Malsters

The weekly quiz at the Malsters in Llandaff starts at 7pm. There are numerous prizes to be won, including the chance to spin the Wheel of Wonder. The spin could win you a round of drinks or an extra point for your team! It’s £1 per person, and it’s recommended to pre-book your table.

Brewdog Cardiff Pub Quiz

Play mind games every Tuesday at BrewDog in the city centre. While there, you can try to choose from the 25 taps of craft beer or dig into the brewing menu. You can win BrewBucks, Beer and a cash jackpot. Plus, entry is free!

Slizza Pizza & Pub

You can quiz at Slizza Pizza & Pub in Canton on Tuesdays between 7.30 – 9.30pm. The BIG Quiz is £1 per person to enter, with a maximum of 5 team members. There are many prizes to be won, including the pot, pizza and fizz.

Barbara’s Bier Bar

The Barbara’s Weekly Boozy Quiz Night in Cardiff takes place on Tuesdays between 8pm-10pm. I recommend you book a table and make a note that you want to take part in the quiz. They host a lot of events here. The winner gets a £50 bar tab.

The Flora

The pub quiz Cathays at The Flora is on Tuesdays at 8pm, every week. There’s a maximum of 6 people per team for £2 per person. A selection of prizes are on offer, including £50 cash, a bottle of Prosecco and a packet of crisps.

Every Tuesday at The Vulcan is the Anti Quiz. Sign-up starts at 8pm for £2 per person. It’s a bonkers evening out where you never know what’s going to happen. Being a smart arse won’t do you any favours here! Expect stupid party games, plenty of abuse and a lot of fun.

Fino Lounge

The weekly pub quiz in Fino Lounge takes place on Tuesdays at 7pm. It is £2 per person (cash only) to participate, with a maximum of 6 people in a team. The winning team wins the prize pot, plus mysterious prizes are to be won.

The quiz night at Mad Dog Brewery on Castle Street in the city centre is held every other Wednesday at 7pm. So, double-check before going. Entry is £1 per player; prizes include beer, merchandise, and cash.

The Ffynnon Wen is a country-style pub in Llanishen. In fact, it’s a 17th-century farmhouse serving great food and drink. The Big Pub Quiz with Paddy McGuinness is from 8pm, with a £50 gift voucher prize.

The Philly has a pub quiz! Hosted by Chris Kerley from Buffalo Bellylaughs on Wednesdays at 7pm, in the Gold Lounge. It is £1 per person to enter, and you can win a £50 bar tab. Plus, it’s happy hour between 4pm-9pm.

The Dock Cardiff Bay

The Big Dock Quiz is a monthly event – on a Wednesday! You can check the next date on their Facebook page. Join the fun from 7pm with teams of 2–6 people. Just £2 per person, paid on the night – don’t miss it!

One of the most scenic ways to reach Cardiff Bay is by boat! Hop aboard the water taxi from Bute Park in the city centre and enjoy a relaxing 25-minute cruise along the River Taff, taking in landmarks like the Principality Stadium before arriving right outside The Dock. You can also have an Afternoon Tea at Sea.

The Albany Pub Cardiff

At The Albany in Roath, the quiz night in Cardiff is every Thursday from 8pm in the lounge. Entry is free, and it is hosted by Paddy McGuinness! It is a proper traditional pub with a lively bar, comfortable lounge and a hidden garden, a true gem on a summer evening.

The Three Arches

Quiz night in Cardiff at The Three Arches on Heathwood Road starts at 8pm. The Big Pub Quiz, hosted by Paddy McGuinness, gives the top scorer in each pub each week a £50 gift voucher to spend at their local.

The Lewis Arms

The Lewis Arms in Pentyrch is a traditional pub offering homemade food and a wide variety of drinks. The quiz night in Cardiff is on Thursday, starting at 8pm. There are cash and alcohol prizes. Plus, Carling is only £3 a pint, and there are free half-time nibbles.

Gwaelod y Garth

The quiz at Gwaelod y Garth is hosted by “Angry Rob”. You can expect new rounds, challenges and the same crap prizes each week. It starts at 8.30pm, every other week. To guarantee a table, call the team in advance. You’ll also get 20% off main courses before 7.30pm. I also recommend Sunday Lunch at Gwaelod y Garth, or a great spot to watch live sport.

Every Thursday at The Lewis Arms in Tongwynlais is quiz night in Cardiff. It starts at 8.30pm, costs £1 to play and includes free shots and snacks. If you’re hungry, you can get a meal and a drink from £10.75.

For only £1 per person, the quiz night at The Mackintosh on Mundy Place starts at 8pm. A maximum of 6 people per team is allowed, and you can get extra points for the best team name. The prize pot is up to £100.

At Motel Nights near Victoria Park, choose your teammates wisely, as it is challenging. You do need to book tickets in advance as tables are limited. It starts at 7pm on Thursdays. The street food is a must-try, so go hungry!

Start the weekend on a Thursday at The Three Elms in Whitchurch. There are prizes for the top 3 teams and an additional chance to win money during the halftime bingo. The quiz starts at 8.30pm. Eat here, or there are plenty of other places to eat in Whitchurch.

The Sand Martin

Every Thursday from 7.30pm is quiz and bingo night at the Sand Martin in Leckwith. Sometimes they are themed, such as Friends or Harry Potter. Entry is £1 per person, and the winning team takes home a prize. Table bookings are welcome in advance.

The Plough

The Plough hosts a themed quiz night generally on a Thursday once a month – dates are varied, so best to check out their social media. Teams are for a maximum of six eggheads; entry is £2 per person. The quiz starts at 8pm. If you’re looking for things to do in Whitchurch before, there’s plenty to keep you occupied.

Paradise Garden

Quiz night kicks off at 7pm on Thursdays at Paradise Garden on City Road. Entry is £1 per person, with a maximum of 5 players, and the winning team takes the cash pot and a bottle of natural wine.

The Owain Glyndwr

At the Owain Glyndwr, you’re allowed to use your smartphone. In fact, you need one. The quiz is free to enter. You could win a £20 bar tab as well as the national prize of up to £1,500! It starts at 7.30pm.

The Glassworks

The Glassworks in the city centre hosts a monthly pub quiz. Generally, it’s on the last Thursday of the month, but it may change if there is a special event on. The big prize is £50, plus a Green King gift card and lots of other goodies. It starts at 7.30pm.

Ty’r Winch Bar

Pub quiz night at the Ty’r Winch Bar in St Mellons is on Thursday night at 9pm. The Grade II listed pub and guest house has recently been renovated. It is incredibly cosy, with 3 open fires and flagstone floors.

The Taf

The Taf Quiz at Cardiff University Students’ Union, is every Thursday at 8pm for a night of challenging trivia, epic prizes – including a minute behind the bar – and loads of laughs. It’s just £5 per team (max 8 people), with food and drink offers from 4pm. It’s the perfect student night out.

The Sunday night quiz at Porter’s on Bute Terrace. The bar opens at 4pm and the quiz starts at 7.30pm. It’s £1 per team member for up to 6 players. The winners take the quiz pot. Don’t be late!

Quiz night at The Pear Tree on Albany Road starts at 8pm. It costs £1 per brain, with a £70 prize pot. The rounds include pictures, current affairs, general knowledge and music. It is first come, first served for tables, so you may want to go early to bag a spot.

The weekly pub We Love Quiz at Mary’s bar in the city centre is on Sunday at 7.30pm. The fast, fun quiz takes place on your smartphone, where you can compete for substantial cash prizes against different teams across the UK. Cheating is difficult, as it’s the fastest finger first. Plus, it’s completely free to play. 

Romilly

On Sundays from 8.30pm at The Romilly in Pontcanna is the weekly quiz night (apart from bank holiday weekends). It is £1 per player, and there is no cap on the number in a team. There is a picture round, general knowledge, multiple choice and a wipe-out round. If you want to, there is an additional raffle called the Snowball Question.
