Cardiff Cruises Afternoon Tea At Sea

On a beautiful day in August, after weeks of dull skies and rain, I took Mum to celebrate her birthday with an afternoon tea at sea. You board the Cardiff Cruises boat in Mermaid Quay and are greeted by the staff who showed us to the table. It’s undercover, so you don’t have to worry about sea spray in your sandwiches.

The boat set off through The Bay, Penarth Marina and passing the City Centre. It is mesmerising to see Cardiff from a different perspective. The views are stunning, and the atmosphere on the boat was peaceful and relaxing. Just want is needed on the weekend!

It wasn’t the first-time mum, and I had tea at sea. Last year we had afternoon tea on Princess Cruises.

What’s on the Menu

The afternoon tea was on the table, waiting for us. Sandwiches; cheese and pickle, smoked salmon and cream cheese, cucumber and ham salad, homemade scones with clotted cream and jam, a fruit tart with custard, Victoria sponge, chocolate cake, and savouries; cheese and tomato quiche, cocktail sausages and a mini pasty, are all beautifully presented on a three-tiered stand. Vegan and gluten-free options were available too.

There is a choice of tea too; English breakfast, Earl Grey, chamomile, peppermint and berry. While Mum and her best friend sipped the English breakfast, I enjoyed the fruit tea instead. When booking, I also upgraded to bottomless Prosecco – it was a celebration, after all. A bottle in a cooler was put on the table, which meant our glasses were topped up regularly. The empty bottle was also quickly replaced with a full one. And once we had finished eating, we stepped to the outdoor section of the boat. Enjoying the sunshine and breeze in our hair.

Additional drinks can be purchased on board if you don’t want to go bottomless. It is card payment only.

Cardiff Afternoon Tea Experience

What felt like much too soon, the boat had docked – even though the cruise was for two hours. Feeling refreshed and content, it was off into the sunshine to find one of the cocktail bars in Cardiff Bay.

This is a must if you’re looking to do something different or for a unique celebration. Don’t worry about seasickness – something I get – I didn’t feel a thing. Afternoon tea is £29 per person, and an additional £15 to upgrade to bottomless Prosecco. You book online.
