The Best Street Food Dishes to Try in Cardiff

Foodies in Cardiff have a lot of choices when it comes to jumping in fork first. More independent restaurants and food traders have been popping up for some time, all serving delicious offerings. Welsh street food is bigger than ever before, providing the delectable flavours of the world. From pizza to rotis or a burger and ice cream. What’s not to love? Eat in or takeaway; here are some of my favourites serving street food in Cardiff, Wales.

Best Street Food in Cardiff

Sticky Fingers Cardiff

The venue can be found on Richmond Road in Roath.ย Sticky Fingersย is open 7 days a week for great cocktails and drinks, and street food is served Thursday โ€“ Sunday. Each week there are various vendors with everything from pizza, fried chicken, Thai and burgers.

Corporation Yard Cardiff

The Corp Yard is in the garden of the old Corporation pub in Canton. It’s all about that street food vibe and carnival atmosphere. You can expect alfresco dining and creative dรฉcor with vibrant colours. The street food market in Cardiff is from Thursday to Sunday between 4pm-10.30pm. Food merchants have included Bao Selecta, Saray, Patisserie Verte, Wing Stack and Return of the Mac.

On Saturday and Sunday between 10am-3pm, you can also shop at the Indie Superstore. You can browse everything from food to fashion and everything in between. Think vinyl, cakes, vintage clothing, arts and crafts.

Bone Yard Cardiff

Founded in 2015 on a large, former industrial estate in Canton. Bone Yard is made up of 10 shipping containers filled with artists, makers and creators, plus street food. Whilst you are shopping for plants, jewellery, restored furniture or kitchenware, eat food from the award-winning Dusty Knuckle Pizza or some Bad Boy Brownies.

Bridge Studios Cardiff

The sister site to Bone Yard is Bridge Studios. It is a former welders’ yard and opened in late 2017. It is just off Western Avenue and is within walking distance of Canton, Fairwater, Llandaff North and Gabalfa. Visit Flowerhorn, the microbrewery or Vin Van Caerdydd, a wine delivery service. Dig into Mr Croquewich’s grilled cheese and Croque monsieur style sandwiches, Fritti Italian street food, Relish meals or Holy Yolks.

Asian Street Food Cardiff

Brother Thai

The new boy on the block is Brother Thai. They’ve been a Cardiff street food festival favourite for some time, and their rotis are legendary. But now they have a restaurant on Whitchurch Road! You can order a choice of โ€˜platesโ€™ such as sticky spicy beef, Thai basil chicken or roasted jackfruit, rice bowl and a choice of roti. The menu has meat-based, gluten-free and vegan-friendly options throughout.

Pontcanna Market

Pontcanna Market is a farmers market, vintage flea market, craft fair and street food venue. There are regular street food events, but daily you can try Lazy Leek, Lufkin Coffee, Alex Goodch Bakery and wood-fired pizzas and Pipes craft beers.

Tiger Yard Cardiff

On the former Doctor Who museum in Cardiff Bay is Tiger Yard. There are 22 rainbow-coloured shipping containers with bars, kitchens and seating areas. The food offerings are diverse, with traders serving everything from tacos and steak to Greek cuisine and gourmet fried chicken.

Street Food in Cardiff City Centre

Mowglis Street Food Cardiff

The simple dishes at Mowgli Restaurant Cardiff on Church Street are packed with a fresh flavour and serve food how Indians eat at home and on their streets. The Indian street food in Cardiff includes breads, curries and rice. However, the tiffin boxes are usually the star of the table. It is a potluck or, as they call it, a food roulette. The chef will choose 4 tiers of meat, veg and carbs โ€“ perfect if you can’t decide on which dish to go for. Is Mowgli street food in Cardiff halal? Yes, it is. It also has a dedicated gluten-free and vegan menu.

Cardiff Food Market

Cardiff Market is so much more than what it seems on the outside. A myriad of dreamy food options, from street food tacos to traditional bacon baps. It’s an utterly magical place in which you could easily and quite happily lose yourself for hours. Popular street food options include Dirty Gnocchi, Tukka Tuk, Ya Souvlaki, The Bearded Taco and my favourite, Ffwrnes pizza.

Neighbourhood Kitchen

One of the newest street food kitchens is Neighbourhood. On Tudor Street on the outskirts of the city centre, it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With an ever-changing menu, no two visits will be the same. Traders have included Hero Cubano, Sin Nombre Tacos, Chicken Licken, The Dough Thrower and Jollof House Party. Neighbourhood has even teamed up with the nearby venue Tramshed for bank holiday celebrations. The courtyard is the perfect setting for street food and crisp cold drinks.

Not only do you access special parking deals, but you also don’t need to remember where you put the ticket collected at the barrier – mine always gets lost in the handbag. Roath Yard Street Food

Ready for a Street Food Block Party? Roath Yard Cardiff is found in an old milk float depot just off City Road. Throughout the summer (in 2023, it’s taking place between 10 June and 2 July), you can enjoy good food, guest DJs and spectacular drinks. It’s organised by Street Food Circus.

Established in 2014, the Street Food Circus are trailblazers in the hospitality experience. They are the team behind Roath Yard, Forest Festival, Street Food Cinema Cardiff, Street Food Cinema Cardiff and the Welsh Street Food Awards. Guest chefs and street food favourites on the line-up have included Feast, Thai Street Food, Hot Damn Chicken Wings, Bangin Burger, Tukka Tuk, Pasta O Mano, Who Cult Donuts and Rock’ n’ Scallop.

Street Food Warehouse Cardiff

The Street Food Warehouse is a variety of pop-up street food events. They have even toured across the UK and catered at events such as Color Festival Cardiff and Pride Cymru. In the summer of 2021, they teamed up with the Wales Millennium Centre to create Street Food Teras. With outdoor seating and some of Cardiff’s foodie favourites, it’s open for lunchtime bites and summer evenings with a quality view of Cardiff Bay.

Depot Cardiff

The ultimate warehouse space, Depot street market, is one of Cardiff’s most popular weekly events. You’re bound to spot some friends on Instagram digging into the cuisine here. The infamous street food festival has some of South Wales’ finest street food traders. Under COVID restrictions, they have socially distanced tables, a full bar and undercover seating. When allowed, the Street Food Social event will continue indoors. Plus, their top one-offs such as By Order Of, Hip Hop Karaoke, Pizza & Prosecco, and the Friday night sell-out Bingo Lingo event.

Vendors are ever-changing but have included Dirty Bird Fried Chicken, Ffwrnes Pizza, The Greedy Bear, Meating Point, Franks Hotdogs, Keralan Karavan, Artisan Crepes, The Fork Society, Sushi Life, Brother Thai and Winnies Ices.

That Street Food

Looking for Mexican street food in Cardiff? The kitchen is on wheels and has been nicknamed Ivy. It is a regular at street food events and travels around Cardiff and South East Wales. That Street Food serves a fantastic kick of incredible flavours and can even be hired for weddings. It is carnivore, vegetarian and vegan-friendly. Think nachos, tacos, quesadillas and of course guacamole.

Street Food Festival Cardiff

Cardiff Street Food Festival takes place every summer in Cardiff Bay. In 2023, it is taking place between 7-9 July. From curries to kebabs, paella to poutine, and tacos to tapas, find all your favourite flavours on the Street Food Piazza. Alongside this, there is a producer fair, farmers market and live music.
