Wahaca Cardiff Reviews
Opposite John Lewis and near Cardiff Central Library is Wahaca. The restaurant in Cardiff is known for its delicious Mexican food, tequila cocktails and churro desserts. The menu is easy to navigate. Choose some nibbles or the recommended 2 to 3 plates of street food, or go for one of the bigger plates.
Having big appetites, especially my partner Michael, we chose the set menu for two. There’s classics, favourites, vegetarian or vegan. In fact, over 50% of the menu is vege or vegan.
It’s fair to say we experienced the menu! We picked favourites which included pork pibil tacos, buttermilk chicken tacos, Trealy Farm chorizo quesadilla, grilled ‘halloumi Al Pastor’ tacos, organic squash and crumbled feta tostadas, crispy cauliflower bites and chargrilled tenderstem broccoli. Plus, a side of nachos. Michael also asked for a slow-cooked beef brisket burrito packed with green rice, black beans and slaw in a toasted tortilla. We even decided to share churros with chocolate sauce for dessert.

It’s all cooked fresh, so don’t expect it all to arrive at once. Our waitress was brilliant; in fact, all the staff we met gave us excellent customer service. If you’re not sure what to order, they are more than happy to make recommendations. My only criticism was that the food could have had more flavour. I thought the dishes would have more spice, paprika or garlic. But, they were enjoyable all the same.
The drink menu is also extensive, with a variety of snazzy margaritas, beers, cider, tequilas and classic cocktails. There is even wine and hot drinks. I had a refreshing strawberry and mint cooler from the mocktail menu as I was driving.

Mexican Restaurant Cardiff
Wahaca is the brainchild of Thomasina Miers, the winner of MasterChef in 2005. Having always loved Mexico and inspired by the food of her travels, she opened the first Mexican restaurant in Covent Garden, London, in 2007.
A big part of the restaurant is its sustainability. Wahaca is the first UK restaurant group to be certified Carbon Neutral. Even the heat produced by the fridges is used to heat the water. With flow controllers for the plumbing, motion sensor lighting and none of the waste is sent to landfill. Glass, aluminium, plastic, paper and card are recycled. Food waste is converted into biogas and liquid fertiliser. General waste is incinerated, and even that creates renewable electricity.
