So many times, I’ve heard Vivo Amigo be referred to as a hidden gem in Cardiff. With its bright colours and Insta-worthy decorations, it’s often plastered over my feed.
I have to be honest; I didn’t know what to expect when I heard that Vivo Amigo is an Indian Mexican fusion restaurant. Both cuisines use spices. Mexico uses a lot of garlic, allspice, thyme, oregano, cumin and cinnamon. Indian spices vary by region, but typically they are turmeric, coriander, garam masala and ginger. How would the dishes come together?

The Vivo Amigo menu is dubbed as ‘East Meets West’. So, you can expect bold flavours to be served. For those who want to try a bit of everything or like to share starters, the tapas bites encompass many of the popular starters. Starters also include quesadillas, empanadas and tacos. I had halloumi fries with a tomato and garlic dip, plus masala calamari with a harissa mayo dip.
Mains include enchiladas, burritos, roti tacos and fajitas. How do these incorporate the Indian aspect? They include fillings like pulled tandoori chicken, spicy paneer and smokey aubergine. There are also burgers served with masala fries. Would you choose the crispy fried tandoori chicken, beef madras or Bombay Vada Pav (a vegan offering with spicy potato)?
I stuck my fork into a Chicken Tikka Frankie Roll. A tortilla stuffed with grilled peppers, onion, pickled vegetables, cheese, chicken tikka and green sauce. It is served with seasoned chips and raita. Wow, just wow! It is so tasty. The meat is juicy, and the flavours all pop – working together perfectly.
There is also a children’s menu. And lots of options for look for gluten-free or vegan choices.
Would I Eat There Again? | Cardiff Mexican Restaurants
I was surprised to find out the food was so good. I was utterly wrong. Indian and Mexican food can be combined. The flavours aren’t too different to work together. The portions are generous. After your tastebuds have burst, you’ll have to roll yourself out of the restaurant.
The staff were great too. Really attentive but not overbearing. They could answer questions about the dishes on the menu and gave insightful opinions when deciding between two plates.
The biggest plus is how budget-friendly Vivo Amigo is. Two starters, two mains, a shared dessert and a couple of homemade lemonades each came to just under £50.
