Best Wetherspoons in Cardiff
Wetherspoons pubs are known for restoring historical or meaningful buildings such as police stations, churches and old cinemas. They buy food and drink in bulk at a reduced rate and pass the savings on to customers. So, if you’re looking for a cheap drink or menu, you know where to head. The Wetherspoons in Cardiff are not dog-friendly, except for assistance dogs. Free WiFi is on offer, and they do not allow vaping. Children are allowed but have to be out by 8pm. Actual opening hours are from 8am until midnight; however, some are open later.

Wetherspoons Cardiff Bay
The Mount Stuart
The former dock building is named after the Marquesses of Bute’s ancestral home on the Isle of Bute. The Marquess is credited as making Cardiff what it is today. The Mount Stuart in Cardiff Bay took over the old Harry Ramsden’s building and opened in July 2013. The roof terrace is a popular spot, especially when the sun comes out. So, good luck trying to get a seat. Its opening times are 8am until midnight.

Wetherspoons Cardiff City Centre
The Great Western
The Great Western Hotel was built in 1879. My great-aunt even worked here in the 1950s. It is the closest put to Cardiff Central Train Station, so it is a top meeting spot. No longer a hotel, the Wetherspoons pub is across two floors, with a small outdoor smoking area on the first floor. It’s open until 1am on Friday and Saturday nights. A great night out, too, with a DJ playing dancefloor fillers at weekends.

The Prince of Wales
Just a short walk (less than 2-minutes) from The Great Western is The Prince of Wales pub. It’s always popular, especially on weekends as revellers get ready to hit the bars and clubs. The large Prince of Wales bar is across two floors.
Originally it was the Theatre Royal which opened in 1878. It was renamed the Prince of Wales in 1935 for the future King Edward VIII. In 1965 the theatre became a cinema – which specialised in erotic films. Many of the original – stunning – fixtures and fittings remain, including the stained-glass dome in the main entrance. The private boxes can be seen on the first floor. It’s also one of the stops for the blue plaques in Cardiff.

The Gatekeeper
Another of the Wetherspoons in Cardiff City Centre is The Gatekeeper. It is a 5-minute walk from The Prince of Wales. The pub is near the site of one of the five gateways through the medieval city walls. As it is opposite the Principality Stadium, it is bustling on rugby days and when there are concerts. The downstairs floor is on different levels and has more seating upstairs.

Central Bar
Back in the 1800s, this area of Cardiff was known as Crockherbtown and was renamed Queen Street in 1887. Central Bar gets its name from the Central Congregational Chapel built on the site in 1901. It’s one of the smaller Spoons but is still over two floors and has an outdoor patio at the back of the pub.

Transport for Wales now offers Multiflex, which gives you 12 journeys for the same price as 5 returns. Who doesn’t want to save money? With stops in Taffs Well, Radyr, Whitchurch, Llandaff North, Cathays, Cardiff Bay, plus two in the city centre.
Pre-book your parking and save!
There are plenty of NCP car parks in the city centre, including on Westgate Street or Pellett Street. NCP Park Pass is an easy way to save money on parking. Not only do you access special parking deals, but you also don’t need to remember where you put the ticket collected at the barrier – mine always gets lost in the handbag. As payment is contact-free and cashless, you do it on your phone.
You can always pre-book your parking online and save money if that’s not your thing. Find a car park, choose your date and time, enter your details and make your payment. Once you’ve booked your parking online, you will receive a booking confirmation email detailing your booking and how to enter and exit the car park.
Wetherspoons City Road Cardiff
Ernest Willows
The pub is on the busy City Road, serving patrons from all over Roath and Cathays, including the student population who live nearby. The Ernest Willows is named after a pioneer born on Newport Road in 1886. He developed airships and was the first man to fly over Cardiff in 1910. And, was the first man to cross the Bristol Channel in a powered aircraft and the English Channel from England to France.
Before being converted to a pub, the building was a showroom for Glanfield Lawerence Motors, the main dealer for Vauxhall and Fiat in Cardiff. The Ernest Willows is on one level, with a small outdoor area. Wetherspoons are known for their extravagant toilets, but there is a water fountain in the ladies.

Wetherspoons in Gabalfa
The Aneurin Bevan
Unusually, The Aneurin Bevan is situated in the middle of a roundabout. It is named after the founder of the NHS. Nye Bevan was from Tredegar and was the MP for Ebbw Vale. The pub is easy to get to from Gabalfa, Whitchurch and Heath. In fact, it’s close to the University Hospital of Wales. It’s the only Wetherspoons in Cardiff that has a car park. There is an L-shaped room where the bar is, with other areas in the back.
Address: Caerphilly Road, Heath, Cardiff Postcode CF14 4AD. Opposite the Three Horse Shoes pub and near the Manor Way flyover, locally known as Gabalfa roundabout.
Wetherspoons in Canton
The Ivor Davies
The pub is named after the actor, songwriter and composer known as Ivor Novello. He was born in Ivor Davies in 1893 at 95 Cowbridge Road East. Before it became a Wetherspoons pub, it was the site of Lyn Thomas Furniture Store. The Ivor Davies is popular with Cardiff City Football Club fans on match day, as it is a short walk to the Leckwith Stadium.
