Taffs Well may be small, but it packs a punch when it comes to quirky charm and offbeat adventures.
Explore the Taff Trail
Whether cycling, walking or exploring with the dog, the Taff Trail is a scenic path that winds its way from Cardiff to Brecon for 55 miles (88.5 route continues along the river through Glyntaff to Ynysangharad Memorial Park. You will join the trackbed of a disused railway to Merthyr Tydfil.

Taffs Well Park
In the centre of the village is Taffs Well Park. It is in the shadow of the magnificent Garth Mountain. There’s green space for children to play ball games, a playground, bowling green and tennis courts. The paths lead to the thermal spring and remembrance garden.

Did you know that Wales’s only thermal spring is in Taffs Well? It was once a busy tourist hotspot and is now nearly forgotten. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, it’s easy to mistake it for an abandoned building in Taffs Well Park. The thermal spring was rumoured to have healing properties, and people would come from far and wide to unwind and rejuvenate in the naturally warm waters.

Fforest Fawr
Fforest Fawr is an incredible national nature reserve. This is the perfect place to take a break from the stress of life and get some fresh air at the same time. In spring, it is covered in bluebells, making it an incredible Instagrammble location in Cardiff. You can even pick wild garlic!
From Taffs Well, you can get to Fforest Fawr by following the Taff Trail, coming up behind Castle Coch. Once there, you can choose which circular trail you wish to follow. The most popular is the Fforest Fawr Sculpture Trail.

Craig yr Allt
The 5.7 miles (9.2km) circular trail is a challenging route, taking around 3 hours to complete. You could start at Fforest Fawr and follow the Taff Trail through Taffs Well before starting the ascent up Craig yr Allt. It’s a steep climb, but the stunning views of the city and surrounding landscape are your reward.

The Garth Walk
Starting near the Taffs Well Inn, head across the River Taff and up the zig-zag into Gwaelod-y-garth. The loop takes you through Pentyrch Woods to the summit. The Garth Mountain walk has beautiful wildlife and incredible scenery. You get stunning views of Cardiff Bay, Flat Holm and the Bristol Channel from the top.
Reward yourself with a drink, snack or Sunday Lunch at the Gwaelod y Garth Inn. It’s one of the dog friendly pubs in Cardiff too! They even have an a la bark menu designed for dogs.

Pentyrch UFO Trail
Whether you’re a sceptic or a believer, the scenic trail offers breath-taking views of the Welsh countryside that are out of this world. In 2016, in the nearby village of Pentyrch, something strange happened in the night sky. Followed by a heavy military presence and explosions. Wales’ ‘Roswell’ is still fascinating UFO hunters years later.

Castell Coch

Perched atop the hill, you’ll find the enchanting red castle. The climb and burn in your legs will be worth it. Castell Coch has highly decorated interiors and rich furnishings. It is a dazzling masterpiece and one of the many castles in Cardiff.

The English Heritage has over 400 sites across the country, from Stonehenge, Tintagel Castle near Bude (I LOVED my visit here!), Hadrian’s Wall and Dover Castle. You can even take six children (aged under 18) in for free. There’s also free parking, discounts on special events and other members’ rewards.
Nantgarw China Works Museum
Step back in time as you explore this meticulously preserved museum’s fascinating world of porcelain craftsmanship. The site is much larger than you would think, with the original pottery site, bottle kilns, three separate buildings and various floors of Nantgarw House. Still fully functioning, the Nantgarw China Works has an onsite museum, tea rooms and a shop selling the porcelain made here, offering a perfect blend of history, art, and craftsmanship.

Hong Kong Taffs Well
This Chinese takeaway, opposite the Coop, is now closed and up for sale. A Fish and Chip Shop will be replacing it.

Best Pubs in Taffs Well
Taffs Well may be a small village, but it has a few to choose from when it comes to pubs. Whether you’re a craft beer connoisseur, a lover of live music, or just someone seeking a cosy spot for a chat, Taffs Well has a pub to suit every taste. All of the pubs can be found on Cardiff Road.
The Ty Nant Inn in Morganstown, The Lewis Arms in Tongwynlais and the Gwaloed-y-Garth Inn are all within walking distance. All of which are dog-friendly.

The pub effortlessly blends traditional warmth with contemporary style. Stepping inside feels like entering a cosy haven with wooden accents and a friendly atmosphere. The Taffs Well Inn has a typical selection of drinks and traditional pub food. Fagins Ale & Chop House is the place to be for real ales and ciders from independent brewers. There’s also a range of more commercial drinks. The food is always outstanding, serving homemade hearty dishes Friday and Saturday evenings and a traditional Sunday lunch. It’s affordable, too. The pub’s cosy interior and attentive staff create an inviting setting for intimate meals and lively gatherings.
