Free things to do in Cardiff City Centre
National Museum Cardiff
Found amongst the beautiful architecture of the civic centre, the National Museum Cardiff is a must for anyone interested in natural and geological history. Exhibits are for all ages, and there are plenty of interactive activities. It is one of the obvious free things to do in Cardiff in the rain.
Cardiff City Hall
Cardiff City Hall is a handsome building. Though primarily used for events and functions, it is open to the public. City Hall houses an extensive art collection, including “Winter” by Joseph Farquharson. The collection is displayed for visitors to view. The building also includes the Clock Tower, highly decorated Edwardian interiors, the Marble Hall, and the Council Chamber.
Cathays Park
Cathays Park, also known as Alexandra Gardens, is a rectangular space comprising formal lawns with island flower beds and specimen trees, between Edward VII Avenue and Museum Avenue and surrounded by the buildings of the Civic Centre. You’ll also find the Welsh National War Memorial here.

Bute Park
Bute Park is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. It’s one of the most relaxing things to do in Cardiff. Visit the arboretum, chill out on the grass, or stroll along the peaceful River Taff. With 130 acres of landscaped gardens and parkland to explore, there’s plenty to do at Bute, one of the UK’s largest parks.

Cardiff Castle
There are lots of castles in Cardiff. On top of a 2,000-year-old Roman fortification, Cardiff Castle is one of Wales’s most visited tourist attractions. It’s also one of the most romantic and best-preserved of the country’s historic castles.
The castle grounds are free to enter. However, there is a fee for a tour or to explore the buildings. If you live or work in Cardiff, you can get your own Key to the Castle, which will give you three years of free admission.

Fogo’s Free Walking Tour
This is Cardiff’s only free walking tour, and it takes place every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11am. The two-and-a-half-hour walk explores all of Cardiff’s attractions and discusses their rich history. It’s a great way to exercise, explore, and learn more about the city. Even locals can learn new nuggets of information or see something they have yet to notice.

The views from Cardiff Central Library over the city centre are beautiful. On a clear day, you can see Castell Coch nestled into the hill. In addition to free access to books and computers, there are regular free activities in Cardiff for adults and children.
Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama
The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama has a rich and diverse calendar of free events and live music. You can enjoy these in the foyer and gallery – from musical performances to art shows. The building is pretty impressive, too.

Stretching over 10 kilometres, the trail leads you through Cardiff Bay towards the Cardiff Bay Wetlands, passing over Cardiff Bay Barrage, where you’ll find a children’s play park and skate park. Keep an eye out for Roald Dahl’s Enormous Crocodile and Ianto’s Shrine.

Covering 100 acres, St Fagans is one of Europe’s leading open-air museums and a great place to learn about Welsh traditions and natural history. Chapter in Canton is open seven days a week with free admission. However, you have to pay a small fee for some independent films, comedy nights, and workshops. There is a free pick-and-mix of activities such as book clubs, Q&As, a sewing social, lectures, and choir practice. Chapter also has a community garden where you are welcome to help care for the plants with weekly drop-in sessions. Plus, there are regular events and annual festivals.
Go Street Art Spotting
Cardiff is home to so much unique street art – from the Empty Walls Project seven years ago to the murals constantly created to represent everything from diversity, the environment, Welsh history, feminism, and endangered species. The art is scattered everywhere from Cardiff City Centre to Butetown, Canton, Grangetown, Riverside, Adamsdown, Whitchurch, Roath, Gabalfa, and Cathays – almost any area in Cardiff you can think of.

Roath Park
Roath Park has an interesting history, including that Jimi Hendrix once woke up on the island after a 1967 gig. You can walk around the lake and hire a rowboat, and children can wear themselves out in the outdoor play park. You can also feed the ducks, swans, and geese – however, the park asks not to give them bread but grains instead.

Go Church Crawling
Do you love church crawling? Or are you interested in old buildings? There’s no shame in appreciating the heritage we have built in this country. There are some beautiful churches to admire in Cardiff. Explore St John the Baptist and St John’s Church in the city centre, St Mary’s in Butetown, St Illtyd’s in Splott, and St Peter’s Church in Roath, to name only a few.
Cathays Cemetery
Believe it or not, Cathays Cemetery is a fascinating walk for residents and visitors. There are many interesting memorials and individuals from Cardiff’s history. Explore on your own, or follow the Cathays Cemetery Heritage Trail.

Heath Park
The park is bigger than you think. Heath Park is on 91 acres and has sports and playing facilities for all ages. Walkers can explore the woodland areas, ponds, and wetlands full of wildlife. There’s even a sensory garden accessible from the hospital, a 9-hole pitch-and-putt golf course, plus footgolf and footrugby.
One Sunday a month, the Heath Park Miniature Railway runs. You can ride on the miniature steam, diesel, electric trains, and trams. It is open to all ages and costs £2.20 per person. Under 3’s are free.

Victoria Park
Victoria Park is one of Cardiff’s best-loved traditional parks. Opened in 1897, the park is situated in Canton. Its colourful flower borders and wide range of facilities continue to appeal to all ages year-round. Here, you’ll find the Billy the Seal sculpture, the park’s most famous resident, and the children’s splash area, which is incredibly popular in the summer.

Caerau Hillfort
In 2019, it was announced that the Cardiff hidden gem would be transformed into a tourist attraction. This will include a Hillfort Heritage Centre, interactive walking trails and conservation work to preserve the remains of St Mary’s Church.
The ruins of the medieval St Mary’s Church can also be explored. It is thought to date back to the 13th or 14th Century and is set within an oval churchyard. Mostly stone rubble. Today, it consists of stone walls and debris, a nave with a porch, a vestry, a chancel and a tower. St Mary’s was restored in 1885 but was closed in 1957 and allowed to fall into ruin.

Hendre Lake
A favourite site for birdwatching and fishing is Hendre Lake Park in St Mellons. The circular walk around the lake is ideal for a quick stroll. With plenty of lookout points and seating, it’s somewhere to bring a book, picnic or fishing rod.

Llanrumney Hall
The Grade II listed building was left to go to ruin before being saved by local fundraisers. Llanrumney Hall is now a community hub. There are regular free events as well as a recording studio, pottery, arts and crafts, outdoor play area and community cafe.
Thompsons Park
One of Cardiff’s oldest parks, Thompsons Park, was initially laid out as a private garden. The attractive park has benefitted from being enlarged and landscaped in 1895. On the peaceful walk, you will see the famous water fountain and ornamental gardens.

Llandaff Cathedral
Built on the site of a 6th-century monastery near the River Taff, this imposing cathedral is full of history. Llandaff Cathedral has been restored and rebuilt numerous times over the centuries, resulting in a unique blend of older and more modern styles.

Insole Court
The gardens at Insole Court in Llandaff are a peaceful, quiet walk. The grounds are an excellent place to spread your picnic blanket, read a book, or reconnect with nature. The Grade II-listed mansion house was saved with lottery funding, and the outbuilding has undergone extensive refurbishments.
Visit the Potting Shed Café for a refreshment or to bake. They make everything in their tiny kitchen, and it tastes incredible. Insole Court also offers plenty of free events, including a monthly farmer’s market, dog shows, craft markets, and exhibitions. Hailey Park
Hailey Park is part of the Taff Trail in Llandaff North. I often start at the car park, walk up to Blackweir Bridge in Bute Park, and walk back. The route takes you past Llandaff Rowing Club and through Gabalfa. There are also playing fields, a children’s park, and tennis courts.

Llandaff Fields and Pontcanna Fields
Llandaff and Pontcanna Fields are an extensive network of parkland and footpaths. The park is Grade II listed, with a tree-lined avenue, children’s play park and sports pitches. Bring your bike and your dog, or explore on foot.

Taff Trail
In Cardiff, the Taff Trail starts in Cardiff Bay and goes to Castell Coch and Taffs Well. On a bike, it doesn’t take much time to complete. Parc Cefn Onn
The historic park, Cefn Onn, used to be a private garden. Hence, it contains magnificent native and exotic trees and beautiful blooms. Cefn Onn has lots to discover, with streams, ponds, woodlands, and many paths leading off onto other trails. It’s also one of the top dog walks in Cardiff.

Llanishen Reservoir
Llanishen Reservoir is a peaceful place to visit. You can walk around the reservoir or follow the Nant Fawr trail. The visitor hub, café, training rooms, and changing rooms for watersports have now opened. Water activities available on-site include canoeing and kayaking.

Thornhill Farm Shop
While you’re enjoying Thornhill Farm Shop, the children (and big kids) can enjoy the purpose-built Pets Paddock, where you can meet the resident animals, including alpacas, pigs, goats, chickens, donkeys, sheep, and, in season, their babies! The shop has freshly baked bread, an affordable on-site butchery, and a deli counter.
Forest Farm Country Park
You can discover country life without leaving the city at Forest Farm. The local nature reserve has plenty of paths and routes to follow. The Glamorganshire Canal also flows through Forest Farm. Here, you can see old feeder locks that were used to transport coal from the ironworks in Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff Bay. Take in the wildlife, including kingfishers, squirrels, birds of prey, herons and ducks.

Also known as Coed-y-Wenallt, it is an area of ancient woodland. The Wenallt is a local beauty spot. It is popular in spring for the bluebells and other wildflowers throughout the woods. Walk up to the iron age hill or follow the footpaths through a wildlife haven.

The awe-inspiring woodland behind Castell Coch in Tongwynlais has lots to discover. The Fforest Fawr sculpture trail, which follows the story of a sleeping giant who lives in the woods, is a particular favourite.

Castell Coch
The Red Castle, Castell Coch, is located on a wooded hillside in Tongwynlais. It is known as the fairy tale castle by locals. It has a remarkable blend of solid medieval masonry and Victorian Gothic fantasy. The highly decorated interiors and rich furnishings make it a dazzling masterpiece.
CADW owns it, so there is a small charge to go inside. However, if you are a member of CADW or have been a member of English Heritage for over a year, you get free entry.
Garth Mountain
Cardiff is one of the flattest cities in Britain and has more green space per person than any other UK core city. However, Cardiff is no stranger to hills either. Known locally as The Garth, the mountain is located between the villages of Llantwit Fardre and Pentrych. The uphill walk is rewarding, especially as you get to take in 360 views of Cardiff and Pontypridd. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Flat Holm.

Free Things to do in South Wales
I haven’t gone too far away, you can still include these destinations in the free things to do in Cardiff list. The tourist attractions and things to do are on the borders or a very short distance from Cardiff. There are so many things to do in South Wales for free.
Caerphilly Mountain
Caerphilly Mountain is fantastic. You’ll be surrounded by rolling countryside and a view of Cardiff Bay in the distance. Also, it’s not really a mountain; it’s just a bit hilly, making it an easy walk. Climb to the top in 10 minutes, or take the circular walk, which takes about an hour. Grab some locally famous food in the Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar.

Wales’ only Thermal Spring
Taffs Well is Wales’ only thermal spring, straddling the border of Cardiff and Rhondda Cynon Taff. Not only is it Wales’ only thermal spring, but it is also the smallest in the world. People travel from all over to take a dip in the ‘healing’ water. Why has one of Wales’ most natural wonders been forgotten? If you don’t know what you’re looking for, it’s easy to mistake it for an abandoned building or toilet block in the park.

Salmon Leaps, Dinas Powys
The Times recently named it one of the top 20 of the UK’s most beautiful woodland walks. At Salmon Leaps, you pass through fields and forests, following the Wrinstone Brook. The route is a figure of eight, so you can walk a 3-mile- or 6-mile.

Penarth Pier
Another of the free things to do in Wales is a visit to Penarth Pier, a beautiful art deco structure that visitors have enjoyed at the Welsh seaside since 1898. The Victorian pier has benefitted from substantial redevelopment but retains some of its original features, and there are plenty of small shops and restaurants close by to explore. As well as clifftop walks. Wander along the pier for free, then sit and relax while enjoying the sea breeze and some fish and chips.

Cosmeston Lakes
The nature reserve and country park has plenty to offer visitors. Cosmeston Lakes is a peaceful location. Explore the natural habitats and wetlands, and run, walk, or play on the vast green spaces. The Medieval Village is also worth visiting, where you can learn what life was like in 1350.
Please note, there is now a small fee for the car park. £1 for up to 2 hours and £2 for up to 4 hours.

Tredegar House
Tredegar House is the perfect place to escape, with extensive wooded parkland, sweeping lawns, and a lake. The grounds are popular with picnic lovers, runners, and dog walkers. For over 500 years, Tredegar House was home to the Morgan family, later Lords Tredegar. The Morgan family has many interesting characters, including a decedent, Henry Morgan, known worldwide as the pirate Captain Morgan.
Visiting the parkland is free. However, there is an entrance fee to the house. National Trust members get free entry and free parking. Non-members pay £1 for up to 2 hours and £3 for up to 5 hours for the car park.

Dyffryn Gardens
Once home to the Cory family, giants in the coal industry in Cardiff, Dyffryn Gardens is now a National Trust property. There are many sights to see; just off the Great Lawn are the garden walks and courts. All have great names, such as The South Garden, Vine Walk, Croquet Lawn, West Garden, Paved Court, Rose Garden, and Walled Garden, to name only a few. There’s even a children’s play area called The Log Stack.
When the National Trust took over the home, it had no original belongings, art or furniture. The Grade II listed house has been partially restored. A few rooms have been furnished but with a twist. There are several interactive elements; you can play the piano, have a billiards game, or browse the book exchange.

Tinkinswood Burial Chamber
If you’re visiting Dyffryn Gardens, stop at the nearby Tinkinswood Burial Chamber. Park in the layby at the entrance, and then it is a 10-minute walk to the tomb, which is topped with one of Britain’s largest capstones. Experts think that at least 200 people would have had to hoist it into place. Excavations have uncovered the remains of over 50 people, along with broken pottery and flint tools.
Legend has it; if you spend the night here on the night before May Day, St John’s Day (23rd June) or Midwinter Day, you’ll go mad, die or become a poet.

If you’re happy to travel, there are more than 20 beaches near Cardiff – all within a 30-minute drive. All are perfect for a couple of hours sunbathing, building sandcastles, playing sports, reading or relaxing, or an evening stroll or weekend walk.
