Need Website Improvement? Here’s Our Take on What to Do

Your business website is your window to the world to show off what you can do. It’s where you can list your achievements and showcase your blog. It’s where you can talk about your products, your services, and how you plan to make the world a better place for your customers. Whether you are in ecommerce and your website is all about sales or you are using a website to impart knowledge, the website is the first place that people are going to be looking when they want to learn more about you.

If your website is poorly put together, people will click on your site and then click straight off of it again. The last thing that you want is to have quick clicks rather than people immersed in your site. You want conversions, whether that’s to gain contact information to help you to determine your email list or whether or not you want people to start buying things. From SEO optimized meta titles to SEO optimized content, your website has to be punchy and above all else, available. If your website is pushing down the search engine results pages, you’re not going to be able to gain those initial clicks from people. You need to be ranking highly and understanding how to do that is exactly what we discuss here. Let’s take a look at how you can improve your website for the better.

  • Put together a list of website goals. You have to identify who your customers are and what they are going to be using your site for. This will help you to really focus on the purpose of the website and the reason that it exists in the first place. You have to really know your customers to be able to arrange your website in a way that’s appealing to them. Are they meeting you in person and then visiting your website? Or are they finding your website online before visiting your physical business? Are they looking to learn something from your website or to buy from your website because it’s cheaper than getting to the store? You have to really put yourself into your customers shoes to determine what you want.If you can determine what they expect from your website, you’re going to be able to deliver that easily.
  • Make your website easier to navigate. Have you ever popped onto a website and then popped straight off again because it’s just too hard to find what you need? If your website doesn’t have a search button for example, people are really going to struggle with looking for what they want. Whenever somebody visits your website, you want them to have an uncomplicated and easy experience. The harder your website is to navigate, the higher the chance that you’re going to have a customer who skips leaving their information or buying something and just moves on. You should be using descriptive labels and it should be easy to use both on desktop and mobile devices. Accessibility is a must, and this is easy to come by when you understand your customer’s needs and you make the effort to understand what they want. Your website should direct your visitors to the most important pages that matter to you. So think about why people are coming to your website in the first place and you’ll be able to build from there.
  • Think about your website design best practice. Visitors who go to websites that are visually appealing will visit those same websites again and again. They also seek that particular aesthetic quality and professionalism with other websites that they are looking for. If your website is not easy to use, is not trustworthy or with the right safety certificate, people won’t use it. It’s super important that you understand readability matters, as does responsive design for a mobile. If you consider the number of people who use their mobile for scrolling and for searching more than they would use a laptop, you’ll be able to deliver what your customers are looking for.
  • Make sure that your website themes are consistent. Your brand is really going to come into play here. A consistent brand theme across all of the pages of your website is comfortable and trustworthy to a reader. You want your customers to feel confident about what you do, and mismatched fonts and text sizes just aren’t the one. If you capitalize your titles on the home page, you need to do that throughout the website so that you can get that uniformity that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. Consistency is so important for navigating your website and if the search bar is at the top right on one page and then at the bottom on another, it’s difficult to look consistent.
  • Make sure that you have a content strategy in place already. Content is king, and we’re not just talking about the blog that you write. You need to make sure that you have blog posts and case studies, infographics and video tutorials, and above all an FAQ section so that people can get their questions answered without having to contact you. Some visitors prefer one medium over all the others, but you may have something in mind that they wouldn’t have thought of. You need to ensure that your strategies are across the board for your content. If you create a piece of content that’s authoritative and then link it to other relevant pieces of content, you’re going to create a seamless navigation experience for your customers.
  • Keep your content updated. You do not need to repurpose old content over and over again, but it can help to find an old piece of content, rewrite it to be more current with updated information, and show that you are a company that is willing to learn. For example, if you have an old piece of content from 10 years ago where you cite certain legislation or certain rules and that topic has now changed, redoing that piece of content and stating that you understand that the laws or the rules have changed, and here’s how you’ve bettered yourself for it. It’s a great way to gain some trust from your audience. You need your business to have some credibility.
  • Make sure that any and all content that you choose to use is original. There is a time and a place for artificial intelligence, and it’s not in your content strategy. In fact, ChatGPT is probably the worst thing to come about for content leaders in recent years, because while you can use it for suggestions, it doesn’t have the same human element and the information is not as up to date as you think it is. Your content should not mirror what your competition is doing. You should have an entire strategy that is just for your business alone. Sure, take some inspiration from other places, but just don’t take other people’s ideas.
  • Lean into your keyword research. It’s so important that your meta titles and descriptions are SEO optimized so that you can be found and your rankings can go up. However, you also need to make sure that your keyword research is done correctly so that you are using both short tail and long tail keywords to be found on Google. The search engines are more forgiving if you are using the right keywords, but you are not overstuffing them into your website. If you start over stuffing keywords, you could be blacklisted and pushed down the search engine results pages instead of pushed up them.
  • Make sure that your content is easy to read. From talking about yourself as a business to talking about a topic, you are an authority on your content. Readability should be easy. Bullet points can really help here, but you can also use highlighted areas and sections where you can ask your customers to click a skip button so that they can get to the bits that are most important. You want your customers to find what they’re looking for quickly, because in a world of instant gratification, people want their information that they want, and they want it now. The faster you do this, the better off you will be.
  • Don’t forget about images. A lot of companies forget the power of imagery and you don’t have to forget it. Images are an essential part of your website design, and they not only inspire emotion, but they convey the concept you’re trying to put across. It’s tempting to fill your website with stock photography, but this is where you can invest a little. If you ensure that you have somebody taking photographs of your actual products, it’s going to make a big difference to your customers’ experience.

If your website is in need of improvement, you’ve now got several tips to get you started. Look at what you currently have versus thinking about what you need, and start putting a plan in place to upgrade your website accordingly.
