Who Are They, Then?
A-head of the Game Nutrition is more than just a meal prep service or a healthy café in Cardiff – it’s a whole vibe. Founded by people who understand how tricky it is to balance tasty food with sports nutrition goals, their ethos is all about fuelling your body correctly without sacrificing flavour. Whether you’re looking to bulk, cut, or just want to eat like an absolute legend, they’ve got you.

They started out as a meal prep service (still going strong, by the way – if you’re into macro-counted meals, they deliver!), but their Whitchurch café is where it’s at for grabbing a high-protein brunch, lunch or post-gym protein shake. And they’re local! They use Welsh produce where they can, earning me extra brownie points.
Food doesn’t have to be boring or repetitive. A Head of the Game Nutrition Cardiff’s mission is to help people see that there’s more to food, like better energy levels, improved mood and mental wellbeing. There will be wellbeing events, cooking classes and nutritional seminars throughout the year.

Ahead of the Game Cardiff Menu
🥩 Steak & Eggs
I don’t say this lightly… this was chef’s kiss. Perfectly medium-rare Welsh sirloin, sliced up and piled on toasted sourdough. Then they pop two perfectly poached free-range eggs on top, ready to ooze yolk all over everything. You get a choice of creamy mushroom sauce (which was my choice) or fiery peppercorn sauce on the side. Protein-packed and properly filling. Infact, I could only manage one egg.

🍖 Beef Brisket Hash
This was a winner, but let me tell you – the menu said tender pulled beef, crispy tater tots, sautéed peppers and red onion, seasoned with herbs and topped with a fried egg. All true! But what they didn’t mention was that it’s smothered in a smoky, spicy BBQ sauce. I loved it (think comfort food with a macro-friendly twist), but it should totally say so on the menu for anyone not keen on BBQ vibes. Just a heads-up if you’re expecting something plainer. Again, I couldn’t eat it all!
539 calories and 41g protein

🍳 Full English XL
Now, if you’re going big, this is the breakfast for you. Two chunky Farmhouse sausages, two thick-cut back bacon rashers, black pudding, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, hash browns (crispy perfection), slow-cooked beans, sourdough toast and two eggs – done your way. My friend went for scrambled, but you can go fried or poached too. It’s a proper full English, but upgraded with quality ingredients and macro-friendly cooking. He has about 6000 calories a day, so it was just a snack!
1073 calories and 60g protein

And, I haven’t even mentioned the protein pancake stacks…
Drinks: Protein Shakes, Smoothies & More!

You’ll find protein shakes, smoothies, and quenchers to wash it all down. You can pimp your drink with Lion’s Mane mushrooms for an extra health kick. It’s the kind of thing you see in bougie wellness spots, but here, it’s just casually on offer with your smoothie. Love that for us.

Ahead of the Game Cardiff Prices
Let’s talk dosh. Because while we all love a brunch date, no one wants to blow their weekly food budget before Tuesday. Rest assured, the prices at Ahead of the Game Cardiff are super reasonable – especially when you consider the quality of the ingredients and the fact you’re getting delicious and macro-friendly meals. The brunch menu ranges from £10 to £20.
Drinks? Smoothies and protein shakes start from about £3-4.50, depending on what you go for (and whether you decide to Shroom It! with Lion’s Mane or other wellness boosters, which is an additional £1.20).
If you fancy your fridge being stocked with nutritionally balanced meals. Prices for those are £4.50 for wraps, £3.75 for breakfast pots and £6.50 for meals. Whenever I visit, I take a few home – and I can highly recommend the makhani chicken curry, honey chipotle beef pasta and the smashed cheeseburger wrap.

Why I’ll Be Back
Aside from the fact that everything tasted amazing, I absolutely love that they put the calories and protein macros on the menu. As someone who’s tracking my nutrition (hellooo calorie deficit), this makes it so much easier to enjoy a meal out without sabotaging my goals. Plus, the staff were super friendly, and the vibe was really relaxed – whether you’re fresh from the gym or just hungry on a Saturday morning, you’ll feel right at home.
Ahead of the Game Cardiff is worth checking out. Nutritious, delicious and no sad salads in sight.
See you in the queue.
