When it comes to afternoon tea in Pontypridd, Heritage Park Hotel offers a setting that looks the part – elegant, relaxed, and ideal for a leisurely catch-up or special treat. I recently visited to try their traditional afternoon tea, which is served in the Loft Restaurant. So, what did I think?

Afternoon Tea Pontypridd
The tea arrived in a charming half-birdcage stand, complete with three tiers of goodies. The bottom layer held a classic selection of sandwiches – tuna mayo, cheese and pickle, and ham – alongside warm sausage rolls and vegetable crisps. Moving up, the middle tier showcased fruit scones and Welsh cakes, both served warm, which was a lovely touch. Finally, the top layer offered a medley of cakes, including a mini lemon drizzle and a cupcake.

Presentation-wise, it was spot on. Everything was neatly arranged. But when it came to taste, I found the cakes and sausage rolls a little underwhelming. They didn’t have that homemade quality you hope for from a traditional afternoon tea – the flavours were mild, the texture slightly dense, and it lacked that buttery, fresh-baked punch that makes all the difference. The saving grace? The scones and Welsh cakes were absolutely delightful – soft, warm, and full of flavour. I could have happily eaten another round of those with a generous spread of jam and cream.

It’s served with a choice of tea or coffee, and we treated ourselves to a few glasses of Prosecco – generously poured right to the brim!
Priced at £14.95 per person, the Heritage Park Hotel’s offering is decent value and definitely looks the part, but it’s more about the presentation than the palate. If you’re looking to book a spot for a relaxed afternoon with friends, it’s still worth a visit – just go in expecting something that’s more “nice hotel offering” than “artisan patisserie perfection.”
In short, beautifully presented, pleasant atmosphere, and lovely scones and Welsh cakes, but the rest of the spread could do with a bit more heart (and homemade flair).

Pontypridd Restaurant
The Loft Restaurant itself is a charming space, blending modern aesthetics with rustic charm, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. It’s also the designated dining area for hotel guests. Beyond the afternoon tea, the restaurant offers a diverse menu, served with friendly and attentive service. On our visit, we witnessed other guests being served generous portions of a traditional roast, adding to the restaurant’s appeal.

After eating, we moved into the bar area, which has a relaxed, welcoming vibe. There are plenty of comfy sofas as well as tables and chairs to choose from, plus a TV showing live sports and even a pool table if you fancy a game.

Stay The Night
If you’re considering extending your visit, Heritage Park Hotel is an ideal base for exploring the South Wales Valleys. With modern rooms, free parking, and easy access to local attractions like the Rhondda Heritage Park and Barry Sidings Country Park, it’s a convenient choice. The on-site spa, gym, and bar add an extra layer of relaxation and enjoyment, making it a perfect destination for a short getaway or weekend escape.
