From the fascinating history of the park to the unique buildings and monuments that date back to the 18th and 19th centuries around every corner, there’s something for everyone at Mount Edgcumbe. One of the most interesting aspects is its rich history. The park has been here for over 400 years and has been home to the most prominent family in the area.

Mount Edgcumbe Country Park Reviews

Unusually for me, I only did a little research before visiting Mount Edgcumbe. So, I was surprised to see the sheer size of it. Luckily, my Sat Nav took us to a suitable car park. However, there are several, so you should check the best for you before travelling. There was a short walk downhill from the car park to the main house. You’ll need sensible footwear, as you’re going to be taking a lot of steps. Some places are uneven and steep too.

It is a beautiful estate in a stunning location. After discovering the house, we walked down to the pebble beach through the woods and gardens. Here my partner and I got an ice cream and a dog-friendly one for Ivan. Sitting on the rocks, we took in the views across to Plymouth and Drake’s Island.

I’ll certainly be visiting again when we’re in the area. There is so much space, especially for an overexcited dog who loves running, sniffing, and bouncing around. I’m sure we’ll discover some lovely walks we didn’t find on our first visit.

Even though it was a busy summer’s day, it was peaceful and picturesque. If you’re looking for days out and things to do, put this on your to-visit list! You won’t be disappointed.

The Historic Gardens

Mount Edgcumbe is one of only three Grade I listed gardens in Cornwall. The formal garden area comprises several garden rooms, each with its own style. High hedges separate many. There is the Italian Garden, French Garden, English Garden and the Rose Garden. The New Zealand Garden has a geyser that erupts every 60 seconds. I wasn’t expecting this, and it startled me.

Exploring the Country Park

If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure, Mount Edgecumbe has some of the best hiking trails in the area. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, you’ll find a trail perfect for you. The park boasts over 10 miles of trails, each with its unique scenery and challenges. The South West Coast Path runs along the shore from Rame Head to the Cremyll Ferry.

Mount Edgcumbe Circular Walk

Another exciting feature of the park is its commitment to wildlife preservation, including rare species of birds and animals. The park is a haven for nature lovers and birdwatchers alike, with walking trails and observation points that allow you to get up close and personal with the local fauna.

As you explore Mt Edgecumbe, you’ll discover a variety of interesting art exhibits, from sculptures to installations, paintings, and murals. The park is an outdoor art gallery. Stumble upon the hidden gems you won’t find anywhere else in Cornwall.

The country park is open to the public free of charge every day, from 8am – 8pm in the summer and 8am – 6pm in the winter.

National Camellia Collection

The delicate camellia flowers appear at Mount Edgcumbe from January onwards. The first 70 were planted in 1976, and since then, cuttings of many varieties and species have been obtained, thanks to the Royal Horticultural Society, Crown Estate Windsor and The National Trust. There are now more than 1,000 varieties. There is a Camellia Trail to follow, or you can go on one of the organised walks to discover them all.

Mount Edgecombe House

There are two parts to Mount Edgecumbe House; the stately home with the formal Earl’s Garden surrounding it and the glorious expanse of the country park. The early Elizabethan mansion, with views of Plymouth, was built for the Earls of Mount Edgcumbe. The Edgcumbe family have owned the land since 1354, but it was not until 1547 that they began to build a brand new house.

The Edgcumbes had lived at Cotehele, further inland, for centuries. But, the wealthy family wanted a new house reflecting their status. I’ve been to Cotehele, and trust me; this is a grand house! This house looks over the countryside, whereas the new home looks across the Plymouth Sound.

During the second world war, Mount Edgcumbe House was struck by a bomb. The rebuild started in 1951, but by 1971 the estate was sold to Cornwall County Council and Plymouth City Council. Today, the interior features portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds and a collection of 16th-century tapestries, with period furniture throughout. The rooms are beautiful, without being overwhelming.

The house is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday between 11am – 4..30pm, April and September. Admission is £9 per adult, £7.50 for concessions and £5 for children. Family tickets are also available.

The Orangery

The Orangery is found in the formal gardens and is used as an exclusive wedding venue. Pebbled beaches and a rugged coastline surround it. It is romantic and picturesque. The Orangery is also where you can pre-book an elegant afternoon tea or hearty Sunday roast.

The Orangery Mount Edgcumbe Opening Times are daily from 10.30am – 4pm.

Mount Edgecombe Cornwall

Regular readers will know I love visiting Looe and the villages of Polperro and Fowey. I usually hate visiting the same places repeatedly, especially as there’s so much more I’d love to explore. However, there is so much to see and do; each trip is different. From Looe, it is just over a 30-minute drive.

Mount Edgecombe Parking

There are several car parks, depending on where you wish to visit. The country park has over 865 acres, so planning ahead is recommended. All car parks are pay and display, which applies seven days a week. They are cash only with no change available or via the RingGo app.

Is Mount Edgcumbe National Trust?

Mount Edgcumbe is owned by Plymouth Council and Cornwall Council. However, the National Trust have a holiday home at Edgcumbe. The traditional stone barn in the hamlet of Penare. The first-floor sitting room has countryside views and an enclosed garden. The National Trust looks after Trerice, a beautiful Elizabethan manor which is nearby.
