Dog-friendly Cardiff City Centre
Cardiff Castle
It’s impossible to miss Cardiff Castle when in the city centre. The imposing castle in Cardiff dates back to the Roman period. Accessing the public square is free, and dogs are welcome to join you in these outdoor areas.
You can get your own Key to the Castle if you live or work in Cardiff. So, tag team with your travel partner to visit inside the buildings. Admission gets you entry to a selection of lavishly decorated rooms in the Castle Apartments, The Norman Keep, Battlement Walk, Wartime Shelters, Firing Line: Cardiff Castle Museum of the Welsh Soldier, Interpretation Centre and audio guide (subject to availability) and Cardiff Castle Grounds. The castle key is valid for three years.
Bute Park
Behind the castle is Bute Park. It is the ultimate place to play games with your dog or enjoy zoomies. As it’s part of the Taff Trail in Cardiff, you can enjoy the excellent nature trails and digital history tours. Make sure you find the Secret Garden Cafe, the perfect spot to rehydrate and refuel – you and the dog.
Princess Katharine
The best way to get to Cardiff Bay from the city centre is by boat. Princess Katherine, the AquaBus, departs every 30 minutes from Bute Park, near the Castle Street entrance. Dogs are more than welcome to sail with you.
Cardiff Central Market
If you fancy browsing the stalls or want to indulge in street food in Cardiff, visiting the historic Cardiff Market is a must. If you love pizza, you won’t regret a visit to Ffwrnes. There’s also Polish cuisine, vegan options, Indian, Korean, sandwiches, tea and coffee. Dogs are very welcome to visit the market.

Cardiff Bay
Cardiff Bay Barrage
The 6.2-mile, or 10-km, trail is a fantastic route to follow. It runs around The Bay and across to the seaside town of Penarth. You can see historic landmarks along the trail, such as the Norwegian Church, the Wales Millennium Centre and The Senedd.
Mermaid Quay
Mermaid Quay is where you’ll find the shops and dog friendly restaurants Cardiff Bay. After hopping off the Aquabus or walking The Barrage, head here for a coffee or cocktail at Coffi Co, Cosy Club, Bills or Hubbox.

Insole Court
Insole Court is still a mystery to those who live in Cardiff. Some are surprised it is there, and even those who regularly visit are unaware of all that is available. But it’s one of our favourite dog friendly attractions in Cardiff. The stately home is more than a beautiful garden to walk in and a cracking cup of coffee in the café – where dogs are more than welcome. So, here are nine things you didn’t know you could do at Insole Court.
Roath Park
In the heart of Cardiff is an oasis of calm, Roath Park. So, you would find it difficult to find a local who has yet to visit the much-loved attraction. The lake and gardens have been landmarks since Roath Park opened in 1894. The tree-lined pathways are a great place to take your dog for a walk. You’ll also find a boating lake, playground, botanic gardens, and more.
St Fagans Dog Friendly
St Fagans is one of the most popular days out with kids and dogs, as it’s one of the museums in Cardiff you can visit for free. The site is a window to Wales’ past, with over 40 different buildings from around the country. Dogs on leads are allowed in all outdoor areas and inside the main building.
Cosmeston Lakes
Cosmeston Lakes is a fantastic place to visit, with or without dogs. With two lakes to walk around and swim in, plus wetlands and woodlands, it’s fair to say dogs love it here. They are even welcome in the Medieval Village and Museum, which is set in the year 1350. Light bites for humans and dog friendly treats are available in the café too.
Dyffryn House and Gardens
When the National Trust took over Dyffryn Gardens, it had no original belongings, art or furniture. A few rooms have been furnished, but with a twist. There are several interactive elements; you can play the piano, have a billiards game, or browse the book exchange. The estate can be traced back to the 7th Century.
There are many sights to see; just off the Great Lawn are the garden walks and courts. All have great names, such as The South Garden, Vine Walk, Croquet Lawn, West Garden, Paved Court, Rose Garden, and Walled Garden, to name only a few. There’s even a children’s play area called The Log Stack. You and your dog will love exploring here.

Tredegar House
The 17th Century mansion is on the edge of Cardiff and Newport. The Grade I listed building is managed by the National Trust. There are over 500 years of history at Tredegar House and the Morgan family – including the world-famous decedent, the pirate Captain Morgan. Currently, it is telling the story of the Newport Rising – the last large-scale rebellion against the authority in Great Britain.
Tredegar Park has over 90 acres to explore, and you can go off lead. But in the formal garden, dogs do need to be kept on a lead. Finally, the café is even dog-friendly and sells puppuccinos and doggy ice cream.
