If you like your evenings out centred around good food, generous portions and a bit of theatre, Tiverton Steakhouse delivers all three – with sizzling plates over hot lava stones to prove it.

A Strong Start

We kicked things off with two starters that set the tone nicely.

First up, garlic bread – five thick slices topped with melted cheese and served with a garlic mayo dip. Simple? Yes. Effective? Absolutely.

The real standout, though, was the squid bombs. Salt-and-pepper-battered, deep-fried, and perfectly cooked, these were spot on. The squid itself was soft and tender, not rubbery in the slightest, with no fishy taste at all. The batter was crisp, well-seasoned and dangerously moreish. Honestly, I could’ve eaten another portion without hesitation.

Sizzle, Sear & Serious Flavour

Mains – this is where Tiverton Steakhouse really comes into its own.

I chose the 8oz Surf & Turf, which came with a rump steak and king prawns, plus chips, salad, and three dips: ketchup, mayo, and garlic butter. Everything was served on a sizzling plate over hot lava stones, so you can finish cooking your steak just the way you like it at the table.

My rump had been seared on both sides to start with, so by the time I got towards the end, it was a little more done than I’d usually go for. That said, it genuinely didn’t matter – it was still juicy, full of flavour and thoroughly enjoyable. Sometimes taste trumps technical perfection, and this definitely fell into that category.

Across the table was the 10oz premium fillet steak, served with chips, vegetables, the same trio of dips and a rich peppercorn sauce. The fillet was beautifully tender, and that peppercorn sauce was exactly what you want it to be – creamy, punchy and ideal for dunking chips into when no one’s looking.

The steaks were washed down with red wine and rosé, which paired nicely with the richness of the meat. Instead of pudding, I opted for a cheeky pineapple gin and lemonade – light, refreshing and a perfect way to finish a hearty meal without feeling completely defeated.

What Else Is on the Menu?

Steak is the main attraction, but the menu also has options for everyone. There are chicken dishes, burgers, fish, pasta, and vegetarian choices, so it’s a good spot for groups with different tastes.

All the meat comes from local Devon farms, which fits well with the restaurant’s historic setting and independent spirit.

In terms of pricing, Tiverton Steakhouse sits firmly in the treat-yourself category, but the quality and portion sizes make it feel well justified. The Tiverton Steakhouse menu prices: starters like garlic bread and squid bombs are £7.95 each, which feels reasonable given how generous and well-executed they are. For mains, the Surf & Turf at £29.95 and the 10oz premium fillet steak at £33.95 reflect the use of local Devon meat and the theatrical sizzling stone service. Sauces are priced separately, with the peppercorn sauce coming in at £3.50, and drinks are in line with what you’d expect for a restaurant.

Dog-Friendly Dining

Good news for dog owners: Tiverton Steakhouse is dog-friendly. Dogs can come inside as long as they stay under the table and out of walkways. It’s not a place for dogs to roam freely. Since we were staying overnight and couldn’t leave our dog in the room, it was the perfect choice.

The steak restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays. It’s open from 6pm to 11pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
