Mamgu’s Kitchen St Davids – Breakfast Review

If you like your breakfasts big, Welsh and borderline unfinishable, pull up a chair because Mamgu’s Kitchen St Davids is about to become your new favourite food stop in Britain’s smallest city. Tucked away in one of the most atmospheric corners of Pembrokeshire, this is the sort of place where the tea is strong, the plates are heavy, and nobody judges you for ordering an extra side “just to try it”.

This was my first proper visit to St Davids, and, needing somewhere for breakfast, Mamgu’s came top of the list. I left feeling full and happy. If you’re planning a food-filled day in St Davids (or need fuel before coastal walking), consider this your friendly, carb-positive guide.

St Davids Coffee Shop

Mamgu’s Kitchen isn’t just another café churning out sad toast. It’s found in the ruins of St Marys College, a part of St Davids Cathedral from the 14th Century, which means you’re essentially eating breakfast inside a history lesson – but with better sausages.

The St Davids coffee shop is an extension of the much-loved Mamgu brand, famous across Wales for its comforting, nostalgic approach to food. Mamgu means “grandmother” in Welsh, and the whole place leans into that warm, welcoming, feed-you-until-you-pop energy. Almost all ingredients are local, so you can feel smugly sustainable while ordering cheese-heavy dishes before 10am.

Let’s talk breakfast. Specifically, let’s talk cheese.

I went for the Welsh Rarebit Breakfast because if rarebit is on a menu, I will order it. No hesitation. No regrets. For the uninitiated, rarebit is the Welsh version of cheese on toast, but better – a rich cheese sauce made with mustard and ale, poured generously over thick-cut bread. This came flanked by a quality sausage, bacon, fried egg, tomatoes and mushrooms. It was huge. The sort of breakfast that sets you up for a full day of walking, sightseeing, or a well-earned sit-down afterwards. I very nearly beat it. Very nearly.

Mike ordered the Mamgu Breakfast, which arrived like a challenge rather than a meal. Two sausages, two bacon, fried egg, mushrooms, beans, tomatoes, toast, a cheese and leek Welshcake, plus an added hashbrown because why not. Smaller portions are available, but honestly, where’s the fun in that?

Because we are incapable of restraint, we also ordered a side of savoury Welshcakes with the chutney of the day. I’m usually a sweet Welshcake person, but these were absolutely lush – crumbly, warm, and dangerously snackable.

All of this was washed down with a proper pot of tea, because anything else would have been unpatriotic.

Mamgu’s Kitchen St Davids Prices

For the quality and portion sizes, Mamgu’s Kitchen St Davids prices feel refreshingly fair. Breakfasts start from £9, with plenty of choice to suit all appetites. There are breakfast baps, crempogs (Welsh pancakes), porridge, and gloriously loaded Welshcakes.

Not that hungry? You can keep it simple with toast, or start your day early with Mamgu Welsh Cakes instead.

The lunch menu also looked very tempting, featuring sausage rolls or quiche with salad, soup, lamb or veggie cawl, jacket potatoes, and La Mexicana Welshcakes – loaded Welshcakes with three bean chilli. Basically, you’ll want to come back.

Is Mamgu’s Kitchen dog-friendly?

Yes! Dogs are more than welcome, which automatically bumps this place up several points in my book. The only rule is that dogs can’t go upstairs, which feels fair when the alternative is letting them roam near cathedral ruins.

Let’s be honest, calling this area “The Shop” doesn’t quite do it justice. This is where you’ll find shelves of beautifully packaged Mamgu Welsh Cakes, mixes, drinks, and other local foodie bits that make excellent souvenirs. There are alternative and traditional Welsh cakes, including vegan Welsh cakes, so nobody gets left out. It’s also ideal if you’re looking for gifts.

The St Davids coffee shop doesn’t take bookings. You can just walk in. If you do need to get in touch, call 01437 231002.

The upstairs mezzanine space offers incredible views of the cathedral and can be hired as an intimate private venue. The event packages include a Welsh afternoon tea with bottomless Prosecco, a luxury buffet, a baked potato bar, or a seafood platter.

Stay in St Davids

If you know when you’d like to travel, try to book as soon as possible. Prices rise as you get closer to the travel date and are usually displayed per room rather than per person. However, there is a vast array to accommodate all budgets.

If you’re more into tents than hotels, camping in St Davids is a brilliant option. There are several well-kept campsites nearby offering coastal views, easy access to beaches, and that unbeatable feeling of waking up with fresh air and nowhere to rush to – especially welcome after a big Mamgu breakfast.
