Eating at The Old Inn Mullion

If you’re planning a trip to Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula and looking for somewhere that nails proper pub food with a side of history and charm, let me introduce you to The Old Inn Mullion. We stayed here during our trip, but the food deserves its own spotlight. It was easily one of the highlights of the whole trip.

The Old Inn in Mullion absolutely delivers when it comes to food. From flavour-packed evening meals to hearty breakfasts and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, it ticks all the boxes. Add in the historic setting, local ingredients, and dogs being welcome, and you’ve got somewhere that feels both traditional and full of personality.

Would I eat here again? Without hesitation!

Places To Eat in Mullion

Housed in a 16th-century thatched building right in the heart of Mullion village, this place has been feeding travellers for hundreds of years. It’s one of the oldest pubs in Cornwall, though not the oldest – nearby contenders like The Old Inn St Breward and The Bush Inn, Morwenstow take that crown. Still, what it lacks in “official title”, it more than makes up for in atmosphere and seriously good food.

I was told by a local that Mullion is the largest village in the UK, but I’ve since discovered that it is recognised as the largest village on the Lizard Peninsula. So, if you’re reading, you were close! It has a population of over 2,000 residents. It is known for its 13th-century church, traditional shops, and picturesque fishing harbour.

The menu is exactly what you want from a Cornish pub – classic comfort food, but with a bit of a glow-up. There’s loads of choice, whether you’re after burgers, pies, or something veggie or gluten-free (they’ve even got separate menus for that, and for kids too).

You’ll find dishes like burgers, pies, woodfired pizzas, loaded fries and fresh seafood, all made using local produce. Meat comes from nearby Mullion butchers, fish is supplied by specialists in St Ives, and even the cheeses (including Cornish Yarg) are sourced locally.

Night One: Proper Pub Food Done Right

We kicked things off with salt and pepper squid with aioli (£9) – crispy, flavourful, and the perfect start.

For mains, Mike went for a chicken, bacon and blue cheese burger (£17) with salad and chips, plus a side of onion rings. A solid choice if you’re in the mood for something indulgent.

I opted for a special: Cajun chicken with boiled potatoes and roasted veg, served with sour cream and a side salad (£17). And honestly? It was lush. Packed with flavour, perfectly cooked, and a really generous portion. One of those meals where you genuinely consider licking the plate.

Night Two: Sunday Lunch (in the Evening!)

One thing I absolutely loved – they serve a Sunday roast in the evening. Ideal if, like me, you don’t fancy a huge roast in the middle of the day when you’re out exploring.

By the time we ordered, only gammon (£14) was left – but no complaints here. It came with creamed leeks, carrot and swede mash, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, veg, and stuffing. Proper comfort food.

We added cauliflower cheese (£3.50) – obviously – and the portions were so generous I ended up sharing some of mine. Not my usual go-to meat, but it was cooked well and great value.

Breakfast at The Old Inn

Breakfast here is exactly what you want when staying somewhere like this, plenty of choice and cooked fresh to order. There’s a continental spread with juice, cereal, fruit, yoghurt and croissants, plus a hot menu including:

Full English
Scrambled, poached or fried eggs
Beans on toast
Boiled eggs on toast

We both went straight for the full English on day one: bacon, sausage, eggs, beans, mushrooms, grilled tomato, hash browns, and toast. The poached eggs were bang on, and the granary bread was especially good. Only tiny gripe? The sausage was a bit meh – but honestly, everything else more than made up for it.

On day two, I switched things up with poached eggs on granary toast, bacon, and mushrooms – just as tasty (and yes, Ivan got a cheeky sausage).

Breakfast is available from 8:00am to 10:00am for overnight guests. Food is served daily in the summer months from 12:00pm–2:30pm and 5:30pm–8:30pm, with slightly extended lunchtime hours on Sundays from 12:00pm–3:00pm and 5:00pm–8:30pm. As with many Cornwall pubs, hours can vary out of season, so it’s best to double-check.

Make A Booking

This place is a hit with both locals and visitors, so booking ahead is a smart move – especially for evenings, Sundays, or during the holiday rush. Walk-ins are possible, but you might be out of luck if it’s busy.

Accessibility

The pub has a traditional layout with multiple rooms, and while much of the main bar and dining areas are accessible, some parts of the building may be less suitable for those with limited mobility due to its age and character. There are steps and uneven floors in places. It’s best to check ahead if you have specific accessibility requirements.

If you’re exploring the village, you’ll quickly realise there aren’t many restaurants in Mullion – but that’s part of the charm. The Old Inn really stands out, not just for its food, but for its atmosphere. It is easily one of the most memorable spots.

It’s got that cosy, slightly quirky layout – like a TARDIS inside – with multiple rooms, a bar, a lounge, and even a little community library tucked away. It manages to feel both spacious and intimate at the same time.

Holidays in Mullion

Whether you’re here for coastal walks, beaches, or just a relaxing Cornish escape, food like this makes a big difference to your trip. Having somewhere reliable (and genuinely delicious) to eat each evening is a game-changer. Over the last few years, I’ve actively looked for pubs with rooms when travelling. They offer something a bit different, historic character, cosy rooms, and great food all in one place.

Bed and Breakfast Mullion

Our large, bright room had everything we needed, and we loved how our dog was welcome everywhere – it made the whole experience feel far more relaxed. The pub itself is a real highlight, serving great food and a vast selection of drinks. Breakfast is cooked to order and of very good quality overall (they can do a perfect poached egg!). It’s also wonderfully quiet at night, and the car park directly opposite is very convenient.

The location is ideal for exploring, with a lovely walk to Mullion Cove and easy drives to spots like Helston, Kynance Cove, Lizard Point, Cadgwith, Coverack, Helford and even St Michael’s Mount, around 30 minutes away.
