Cobbled lanes, pastel cottages leaning over one another as if sharing secrets. And a working harbour that clinks and clatters with the sound of boats coming and going. Add in the smell of fish and chips or freshly baked pasties drifting from every other doorway, and you’ve got yourself a proper Cornish postcard. On this trip, my stomach did the steering – straight into the Harbour Tavern Mevagissey.

Best Restaurants in Mevagissey
Now, Mevagissey isn’t exactly short of places to grab a bite. On a previous trip, I tucked into sandwiches and cream teas at the Lighthouse Café, and popped into the Fountain Inn for a cheeky pint. All lovely, but this time I was after something more substantial. The kind of meal that sticks to your ribs and keeps you happy long after you’ve wiped the plate clean. The variety of dining options in Mevagissey is sure to excite any food enthusiast.
The Harbour Tavern is perched right on the harbour front, so you’ve got that glorious view of bobbing boats and seagulls eyeing up your chips from a safe distance. The building itself is a local gem, with a history stretching back over 300 years. The tavern has worn many hats in its time – including a sailors’ haunt – but these days it’s a cosy spot to dive into a hearty main menu, whether you’re after pub classics or something a little more modern. Surrounded by souvenir shops, fishmongers, and those narrow streets that make you pray you don’t meet a tractor coming the other way, it’s slap bang in the middle of all the action.
Mevagissey Menu
We went in hungry – and left positively rolling. Here’s how it went down:
Me: I had the Signature Sandwich – Need A Bigger Boat. Beer-battered cod, mushy peas, lettuce, and homemade tartar sauce on thick white bread. On paper, it’s the stuff of seaside dreams. In practice? I wanted to love it, but it didn’t quite hit the mark. The bread could have benefited from a light toasting to give it some backbone. With the hot fish, mushy peas and sauce, it all went a bit soft. Still, the flavours were there, and it came with salty crisps and a fresh little salad, which felt like a bonus.
Dad: He stuck with the classic – local beer-battered cod and chips with mushy peas and tartar sauce. His verdict? “Lush!” High praise from the man who doesn’t say many words.
Mum: The gourmet burger and chips arrived in a soft roll with a side salad. She polished off the lot, didn’t even offer Ivan (our adventure dog) a taste of the burger, which tells you everything you need to know.
Mike: The wildcard. He ordered rock salted cheesy chips (which arrived in a portion big enough to share with half the village) and a 12-inch stone-baked pizza loaded with pepperoni, jalapeños, and chilli flakes. This was, hands down, the star of the show. Spicy, rich, perfectly cooked – the kind of pizza that makes you wish you’d ordered it too. In fact, we all had a bit of pizza envy. Lesson learned: next time, it’s pizza all round.
Harbour Tavern Review
Just as we were polishing off the last of our meals, Sunday took a slightly unexpected turn. Around 4pm, a singer appeared, mic in hand, and launched into an afternoon set. Now, the Harbour Tavern might carry the label of a pub, but in reality, it feels much more like a restaurant, so the live entertainment caught us a little off guard. The singer’s repertoire was a mix of clichéd jokes, 70s songs, and a crowd of oldies absolutely lapping it up. It wasn’t really our vibe (well, Mum wanted to stay!), but fair play – the room was buzzing, and it added a quirky, nostalgic twist to the visit.
The staff at the Harbour Inn Mevagissey, were friendly and chatty, happy to answer questions and keep the food and drinks flowing at just the right pace. If you’re looking for honest pub grub with a Cornish twist, the Harbour Tavern delivers.

If you’re feeling adventurous, there are boat trips that’ll whisk you out along the coast – keep your eyes peeled for dolphins. And if you’re here in June, the Mevagissey Feast Week is the highlight of the year.
