The Lighthouse Cafe

Even as a foodie, there are times when you simply crave comforting, delicious food. And when in Cornwall, a cream tea is a must for that warm, satisfying feeling.

When you enter the Lighthouse Cafe, you’re greeted by the warm, coastal charm that defines the space. Its nautical décor, with soft blues, whites, and wooden accents, perfectly complements the café’s seaside location. Seated inside near the large windows is the perfect spot for people to watch as they enter or leave the harbour area.

The staff at the Lighthouse Cafe were friendly and attentive from the get-go. Despite being a busy lunchtime visit, they quickly found us a table and took the time to make us feel welcome, offering recommendations and answering questions about the menu.

The Menu: Local, Fresh & Tasty

The Lighthouse Café doesn’t just focus on the best of Cornish produce, it also offers a wide variety of options. Whether you’re in the mood for a light bite or a more substantial meal, there’s something on the menu to excite every palate.

  • I opted for a tuna sandwich served on thick, rustic bread. On the side, a generous helping of creamy coleslaw added a crunchy contrast, while the fresh side salad of mixed greens and cherry tomatoes dressed in a balsamic dressing made for a refreshing accompaniment.
  • Claire went for the comfort of a British classic: Cheese and Beans on Toast. It might seem simple, but at the Lighthouse Café, it was executed to perfection. The toast was crisp, golden brown, and thick enough to hold under the generous portion of piping hot baked beans. The cheese was rich and full of flavour. Served with a sprinkle of black pepper, this humble dish was a hit.
  • My mum, a traditionalist, chose the Classic Cornish Cream Tea. The scones arrived warm and freshly baked, with a delicate light and buttery crumb. Tearing them apart revealed their pillowy centre, just waiting to be slathered with the rich Cornish clotted cream and a dollop of sweet strawberry jam. It was a quintessential Cornish experience, and the scones were among the best we’ve tasted.
  • Helen, always one for something a bit different, opted for the Homemade Savoury Scones, accompanied by a selection of cheeses, smoked salmon, and chutney. The scones were a delightful surprise – soft, cheesy, and slightly herby, they paired beautifully with the thinly sliced, melt-in-your-mouth smoked salmon. The assortment of cheeses added various textures and flavours, from sharp and tangy to creamy and mellow. The chutney provided a lovely sweetness and tang that cut through the richness of the cheese and salmon, making each bite a balanced and enjoyable experience. It was a sophisticated take on traditional cream tea.
