Colwyn Bay Beach
A classic Victorian seaside resort with a modern makeover, Colwyn Bay Beach, also known as Rhos-On-Sea Beach, is one of Wales’s most popular beach resorts. It stretches over three miles and is ideal for sunbathing in the summer, building sandcastles, wild swimming or picnicking.

Colwyn Bay Pier
The salty breeze, the sound of seagulls, and the rhythmic crashing of waves against the Victoria Pier are so peaceful. The original pier was opened in 1900, and it has burnt down three times. After years of neglect, it partially collapsed during Storm Doris in 2017. It’s now Wales’ shortest pier and the second shortest in the UK, at 132 feet.

North Wales Coastal Path
Lace up your hiking boots and hit the North Wales Coast Path. This scenic route hugs the coastline, offering stunning views of the Irish Sea and maybe even a dramatic seagull or two. From Colwyn Bay, you can head to Llandudno. Passing The Holy Well and St Trillos Chapel, with only six seats, is claimed to be the smallest active chapel in Wales. You’ll also walk across Little Orme and see old quarry remains before ending at Llandudno Pier, the longest in Wales at 2,295 feet.

Parc Eirias
There are 50 acres to explore in Eirias Park. The walk around the boating lake is delightful. It’s a great place to go with your kids if they want lots of space to ride their bikes, scooters or skateboards, or there’s the park. It also hosts live music events, and singers like Olly Murs, Pixie Lott, Little Mix, The Vamps, and Tom Jones have played here.

Things to do near Colwyn Bay

Climb Conwy Mountain
Strap on your hiking boots and ascend Conwy Mountain, known locally as Mynydd y Dref, for panoramic views that will leave you breathless – both from the climb and the stunning scenery. It takes about 2 hours to complete. However, some paths take you further. Pro tip: Pack a picnic and reward yourself with a feast at the summit. After all, you’ve earned it!

Bodnant Gardens
A short drive from Colwyn Bay, Bodnant Garden is a world-renowned National Trust property. The garden is particularly captivating during spring when the rhododendrons and azaleas are in full bloom. There is an entrance fee, but National Trust members are free.

Getting to Colwyn Bay
Even if you don’t drive, you can get to Colwyn Bay by train with Transport for Wales. My hometown of Cardiff is connected to Colwyn Bay by a direct train, and it takes 4 hours. It is also connected to lines from London, Manchester, Chester, Birmingham, Llandudno and Holyhead.
Transport for Wales now offers Multiflex, which gives you 12 journeys for the same price as 5 returns. And who doesn’t want to save money? Especially when you can spend the savings on your staycation. There’s also a pretty excellent Capacity Checker tool that helps indicate the often full trains and the ones with plenty of seats available, so you can decide the best time for your journey.
🐾 Dogs are permitted on Transport for Wales trains free of charge. They must be on a lead at all times. A maximum of two per passenger.
