Tucked away in the Welsh village of Pontsticill near Merthyr Tydfil, the Red Cow Inn is a traditional pub that instantly makes you want to stay a little longer. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and close to Pontsticill Reservoir, it’s a popular stop for walkers, dog owners and anyone craving hearty homemade food in a cosy setting. With generous portions and a huge menu packed with pub classics, it’s easy to see why locals and visitors keep returning.

Traditional Pub Food & Cosy Welsh Charm

There’s something about a proper traditional pub. Here, walking boots are welcome, and dogs are fussed over. The menu is absolutely massive, and you can smell chips before you’ve even opened the door.

The Red Cow Inn Pontsticill, is a tiny Welsh village, tucked amongst the hills near Merthyr Tydfil. On one of the first hot days of the year, after exploring the reservoir and soaking up those Brecon Beacons views, we headed here for lunch – and honestly, I already want to go back.

Red Cow Inn Merthyr

The Red Cow Inn sits in a peaceful little village surrounded by countryside. It’s a wonderful community pub, where everyone seems to know each other. Yet despite its cosy village pub feel, the menu is huge. Not “three microwaved options and a ploughman’s” huge either. Proper pub food done well, with something for everyone. And I mean everyone.

There’s hunters’ chicken, lasagne, steak and ale pie, fish pie, chicken in a ham and leek sauce, steaks, curries, liver and onion, faggots and peas, loaded naans (which looked lush when they passed our table), plus a chunky vegetarian and vegan section too. Those with allergies, including gluten-free diners, can also be accommodated – just speak to the friendly team for more information.

If you can’t find something you fancy here, I’d genuinely be surprised.

The Red Cow Pontsticill Menu

One thing I absolutely love about traditional pubs is that comforting feeling of knowing you’re about to get proper food. No tiny portions balanced artistically on slate boards. Just hearty plates that make you instantly happy. And the food here delivered!

I went for the jacket potato with tuna, which came with a fresh side salad filled with lamb’s lettuce, cucumber and peppers. It was a decent portion – all I needed for lunch – comforting and ridiculously good value at only £7.

Meanwhile, the other half ordered the double cheeseburger with bacon, which arrived stacked high. It came with a generous portion of hand-cut chips and a small side salad. Regular readers will know I always give bonus points to those who make their own chips. Crispy outside, fluffy in the middle, gorgeous golden-brown colour. Proper pub chips that taste even better when you’re sitting outside in the sunshine with a cold drink. It was only £14.95.

The portions are generous without feeling wasteful, and everything tasted homemade and cooked with care. And food tastes better when you’re somewhere cosy, relaxed and happy. And they are brilliantly priced!

Beer Garden Goals

Because the weather was glorious, we grabbed a table outside, and it honestly felt like peak summer staycation energy.

The outdoor seating area is brilliant, with plenty of space to sit back with food or beer. There’s something really romantic about village pubs in the sunshine – dogs snoozing under tables, walkers stopping for lunch, glasses clinking, conversations drifting across the beer garden. It felt wholesome in the best possible way.

Dog-Friendly Inside and Out

If you travel with your dog as we do, you’ll be pleased to know the Red Cow Inn is wonderfully dog-friendly both inside and outside.

Ivan absolutely loved the attention. At first, he sat politely under the table like a distinguished gentleman. Then he got bored. Next thing I know, he’d hopped onto the pub wall and started walking along it like he owned the place, inspecting what everyone was eating and shamelessly requesting a cwtch from every person who walked past. Naturally, everyone adored him.

After visiting, it’s easy to understand why so many Red Cow Inn receives praise for both the food and atmosphere. The standout for me was how genuinely traditional it felt. No, trying too hard. No trendy reinventions. Just good food, generous portions, friendly staff and a cosy pub atmosphere in a lovely location. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

The only slight downside was the payment setup. There’s a minimum £10 spend on card payments, and you can’t open a tab. This was difficult when purchasing two drinks initially.

Now look, I know people say cash is king… but I genuinely never carry cash anymore. I haven’t used a cash machine since before COVID. I’m very much a tap-my-phone-and-move-on kind of person.

Pontsticill Reservoir

One of the reasons so many people visit this area is the stunning Pontsticill Reservoir, also known as the Taff Fechan Reservoir. You can walk around the dam itself and follow scenic routes along the water, taking in beautiful views across the hills and surrounding countryside. It even passes the Brecon Mountain Railway, where you can get a cold drink or ice cream. On a warm day, it’s genuinely gorgeous.

The reservoir was built in the 1920s by Welsh Water to supply water to the surrounding communities, and today it’s become a popular spot for walking, photography, picnics and peaceful afternoons in nature.

It’s easy to turn a visit here into a full day out – reservoir walk, pub lunch, a drink in the sunshine, then another wander through the village afterwards.

There’s a small car park for patrons. We were lucky to get a spot, but spaces fill up during peak times and on sunny weekends.

As the village is small, however, there’s free on-street parking. You may need to park further away and walk.
