I recently had a Nant Ddu Spa Break to see whether it lived up to its reputation as one of the best spa hotels in the Brecon Beacons.

Best Spa Hotel Brecon Beacons
As Nant Ddu Lodge Hotel & Spa reviews go, mine is a mix of genuine relaxation and a wish for a bit more polish. The setting is stunning, the spa therapists are skilled, and dinner was excellent. However, the hotel’s dated interiors, minor oversights, and less-than-slick arrival process meant it didn’t quite reach the “luxury” level.
If you’re looking for the best spa in the Brecon Beacons for a short break, Nant Ddu still has plenty to offer – especially if you value location, hearty food, and easy access to Pen y Fan. Just don’t expect it to be perfect, and you’ll leave feeling refreshed, well-fed, and perhaps a little inspired to book your next countryside escape.
Nant Ddu Spa Break Package
The Nant Ddu Lodge and Spa overnight package is a very appealing one – especially if you love a bit of pampering without travelling too far. (It’s only 30 minutes from Cardiff!)

Prices are based on double occupancy and include one night in a superior double or twin room, a continental buffet, and a full cooked Welsh breakfast. A £10 per person allowance is also included towards lunch, and a £25 per person allowance towards an evening meal. You can also use the leisure facilities the day of arrival for up to 3 hours (although, as it was quiet, they weren’t strict with this) and 50 minutes of treatments – either one 50 minute treatment or two 25 minute treatments.
The treatment menu covers everything from the signature full body massage, signature facial, back, neck and shoulder massage, and full body scrub, to a face and scalp massage or signature mini facial. As spa days in South Wales go, it’s an enticing spa offer.
The spa package can only be booked over the phone, which was actually very easy to do. It’s worth checking availability in advance, especially if you’re looking for a specific treatment or a particular room type.
The Spa Facilities and Treatments
The facilities themselves are a real treat for anyone in need of a break. There’s a small but well-equipped gym for those who prefer to work up a sweat before their spa session, and a spacious swimming pool that feels calm and inviting, especially when the light streams in through the windows. The jacuzzi is perfect for a long soak, with just enough bubbles to ease away tension, while the steam room and sauna offer that delicious “And… relax” sensation.
The only disappointment? The sun loungers dotted around the poolside were rather battered and tired – more “well-loved garden furniture” than luxury spa chic – but still comfy enough to flop onto between dips.
The treatment process was straightforward, though not quite as polished as I’ve experienced elsewhere. There was no formal consultation beforehand, so I found myself talking about my nut allergy and frozen shoulder while already face-down on the massage table. Not exactly the serene start I’d hoped for. That said, my therapist was lovely and clearly skilled, and once we got going, I relaxed straight into it.
My choice? A 25-minute invigorating body scrub followed by a 25-minute shoulder massage – the perfect combination for post-laptop stiffness. The scrub left my skin feeling silky smooth, and the massage worked wonders on the tension in my upper back. By the end, I was floating back to the pool area, ready to let the jacuzzi finish the job.
Nant Ddu Lodge Hotel
The hotel is set against a gorgeous backdrop – think rolling hills, fresh air, and gardens that are genuinely beautiful. The exterior charms you before you’ve even unpacked.
Inside, however, the Nant Ddu Hotel and Spa is undeniably old-fashioned. When we arrived, bedding and towels were piled in corridors as rooms were being cleaned, which meant weaving our way through them – not exactly a slick four-star welcome.
Our room was ready early (always a bonus). It was huge, with a large, comfortable bed and plenty of space, but also had a few niggles: marks on the walls, rust on the radiator, and a sofa and carpet that had seen better days. The bathroom was clean but dated, with worn grouting and no premium Elemis-style toiletries, as one might expect from a Brecon Beacons spa hotel.
Nant Ddu Lodge Restaurant
Arriving on a Sunday meant our £10 lunch allowance could only be spent on the Sunday lunch menu. As I didn’t fancy a full roast before swimming, I opted for a starter: a roasted field mushroom in garlic butter, topped with Welsh cheese, and served on toasted brioche. Mum went for the chicken liver & port parfait with focaccia and red onion marmalade. Both were tasty, but a lighter, spa-friendly option, such as a sandwich or small plate, would have been welcome.
Dinner in the Bistro that evening from the Nant Ddu menu was a highlight. I started with a chorizo Scotch egg, accompanied by roasted red pepper and aioli, followed by the king prawn linguine with crab bisque (from the starter menu), and a side of garlic, herb & parmesan brioche. Mum’s supreme of local chicken with Stilton wrapped in bacon and tagliatelle was hearty and full of flavour.
Nant Ddu Book a Table
Booking a table is straightforward and advisable, particularly on weekends. The Bistro is cosy, but there’s also a bar area that we only discovered after eating – something to know if you prefer a more relaxed setting.

Breakfast is also served in the restaurant with both continental and cooked options. The full Welsh breakfast was hearty, with granary toast, jam, and a pot of tea to start the day right. You can also choose veggie options or kippers if you fancy something different.
