I was recently invited to a baby shower at Browns Wilmslow. So, I made the journey up from Cardiff in icy conditions to stay the night. My boyfriend and rescue dog, Ivan, headed to the local pubs with the father-to-be while the girls and I enjoyed a cosy afternoon nibbling sandwiches and sipping on a glass of champagne.

The Browns Wilmslow Menu – Afternoon Tea
From the moment the elegant tiered stand arrived at our table, it was clear we were in for a treat. The savouries were a delicious mix of indulgence and tradition. The brioche roll with lobster tail in a Sicilian lemon and dill mayonnaise was my favourite – creamy, citrusy, and oh-so-luxurious. The cured salt beef sandwich with horseradish cream and baby cress packed a punch with bold flavours. The Ploughman’s sandwich with Cheddar, sticky pickle, and sliced apple was a delightful nod to a British classic. The smoked salmon rillette pâté on toasted rye added a refined touch with its silky texture and rich taste.
Next up are the scones because no afternoon tea is complete without them! Browns Wilmslow serves both fruit and plain scones, and they were absolute perfection – light, fluffy, and warm. Accompanied by generous dollops of clotted cream and blackcurrant jam – which was a pleasant change as it’s usually strawberry.
Finally, the sweet treats! The blackcurrant Victoria sandwich was delightfully fruity, while the black forest chocolate pot was rich, indulgent, and every chocoholic’s dream. The mini carrot and orange cake was moist with just the right balance of spice and citrus. As I’m nut intolerant, I don’t usually get to eat carrot cake (my favourite), so I was so pleased to hear it was nut-free. Lastly, the lemon meringue tart brought a zesty kick to round off the meal beautifully.
All of this was, of course, perfectly paired with a pot of loose-leaf English Breakfast tea because what’s afternoon tea without a proper brew? Other options included Earl Grey and fruity infusions.
We also raised a glass to the baby to be with some Champagne!

Worth Every Penny?
When it comes to Wilmslow restaurants, Browns offers a mid-to-premium range experience. While their afternoon tea may not be the cheapest in town, the quality of the ingredients and the overall experience make it excellent value for money. In January 2025, it was £25 per person for a Classic Afternoon Tea.
We also had top service. I didn’t take her name, but the team member who looked after us was relatively new and excited to talk us through the menu. She checked on us regularly and got us top-ups.
So, whether you’re celebrating or simply fancy an afternoon of indulgence, Browns Wilmslow will not disappoint!
