On a recent trip to the North West visiting friends, we desperately wanted a Sunday roast in one of the country pubs near Wilmslow after a heavy night out. The Churchill Tree at Alderley Park came highly recommended, so we had to check it out.

Pubs in Alderley Edge | Alderley Edge Restaurants
There are so many good pubs in Cheshire. After a recent lavish reinvention of the historic former Grade II listed Tenants Hall into a stylish new community pub, The Churchill Tree was on my must-visit list. Found in the “millionaires village” of Nether Alderley, which has been described as one of the poshest villages in the UK by The Telegraph.
The Churchill Tree History
The Churchill Tree has a remarkable history. The Stanley family used it as a ballroom for extravagant parties to entertain guests of power and status. These legendary figures include Prime Minister Asquith and Lord Stanley.
The Tenants Hall was also used as a hospital for war heroes and as a conference centre in the 80s. When the park was transformed into a luxury housing estate in 2014, the pub was at the heart of the community.
The pub, owned by Country Pubs Cheshire, is named after former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who famously visited the country estate as a young man and planted a tree here. The renovation has retained original features, including a grand fireplace, spectacular stained-glass windows and wood panelling with old family crests.

The Churchill Tree Reviews – Sunday Lunch
Being unaware of the grandeur of the building before I arrived, I was glad I didn’t turn up in my muddy walking boots. (As we planned to walk in Alderley Edge Park, which is opposite the pub, afterwards) However, you can dress up smart or come more relaxed; there’s no strict dress code.
The bricked building does not hint at the sheer size or splendour of the inside. The attention to detail is magnificent. I often lost the conversation thread at the table as my eyes wandered around the room, taking in the finer details.
So, what’s on The Churchill Tree menu?
I have to be honest; I’m not always a fan of having a Sunday lunch in a restaurant or pub. It’s never as good as at home. I love crispy roasties, soft vegetables and super thick gravy. However, The Churchill Tree impressed me!
I chose the mixed roast with pork, turkey and beef. My only criticism is that it’s all very thinly sliced; I would have liked a bit more bite to the meat. The large plate came with a giant Yorkshire pudding, mashed potato, swede and carrot mash, a cabbage and broccoli medley, three roast potatoes, a small slice of stuffing and crackling. All covered with onion gravy. It was presented beautifully, was piping hot, and was served quickly.
My eyes were too big for my belly, and I didn’t finish everything. And I’ve got a good appetite! It may have been because I had a starter from the specials of cauliflower wings in a teriyaki glaze, served with a pepper salad.
For such an upmarket establishment, the price was reasonable. Two starters and mains, an extra Yorkshire pudding and drinks came to just under £55. Of course, you can get this cheaper elsewhere, and it is more expensive than dining out in my hometown of Cardiff, but it was a wonderful experience. The customer service was also brilliant. I felt we were welcome there, from being greeted with a smile to a genuine goodbye when we left.
Will I be returning?
Living so far away, it’s not somewhere I could go regularly. But I’d love to go back and try more of the menu! They host regular comedy nights, which would be great fun. Alongside up-and-comers, there were some names that I recognised. Maybe on our next visit.
Is The Churchill Tree Dog Friendly?
Yes, The Churchill Tree is dog friendly! Dogs aren’t welcome in all areas, so mention that you’d like to bring your four-legged best friend when booking. We sat in the bar area, and our rescue dog Ivan was made to feel very welcome. All of the servers came over to fuss him, brought a bowl of water, and he was given dog biscuits.
Stay the Night
If you know when you’d like to travel, try to book in advance and as soon as possible. Prices tend to rise the closer you get to the travel date. However, there is a vast array to accommodate all budgets.
Best Western Hotels
There are six Best Western Hotels in and around Manchester. The closest to The Churchill Tree is Pinewood Hotel on Wilmslow. Every Best Western hotel is individual and crammed full of its own personality. From big comfy beds, fresh linen sheets and free WiFi. Some of the hotels in Manchester have parking which charges a small fee.
Radisson Blu
There are plenty of Radisson hotels in Manchester, including Park Inn in the city centre and The Edwardian, a 5-star hotel in a Grade II listed building. The closest to The Churchill Tree is the Radisson Blu at Manchester Airport. All rooms are modern and comfortable, the ideal hideaway during your visit.

The easyHotel Manchester has double rooms (with or without a window), accessible bedrooms and twin rooms. Found less than a 3-minute walk from Manchester Piccadilly train station. The budget hotel has en-suite bathrooms, heated rooms in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. WiFi is free; pay and display and multi-storey car parks are nearby.
MacDonald Manchester Hotel
The largest 4-star hotel is the MacDonald Manchester. Its eye-catching design dominates the skyline all the way from Piccadilly Station to the Mancunian Way. The spacious bedrooms are amongst Manchester’s largest hotel rooms, with fantastic facilities and free WiFi. There are plenty of special offers, including spa breaks.
Britannia Hotels
Britannia Hotels in Manchester have rooms from £49 per night. The hotel offers excellent value for money with spacious en-suite bedrooms, TV’s and tea and coffee-making facilities. Complimentary WiFi sessions are included, as well as low-cost parking. Even pets are allowed to stay for a small additional charge. Tip – ask for a room on one of the upper floors, as the views of the city are spectacular.

The Copthorne, part of Millennium Hotels and Resorts, is a traditional 4-star hotel in Manchester that is ideally located in Salford Quays.
