Hair loss in women might not always be as addressed as it is for men due to it perhaps not being quite as common. However, hair loss can be a problem for women of all ages and for a variety of potential reasons. Below we’ve listed 5 of the most common causes of hair loss in women, as well as the potential treatments out there to help.

Alopecia
Alopecia is a condition that causes hair loss in both women and men. Hair loss can occur anywhere on the body, but perhaps most noticeably on the head. There are many different types of alopecia, but the main ones include:
- Alopecia areata -the most common form
- Alopecia totalis- total hair loss on the head
- Alopecia universalis- total hair loss from the head and body
Bald patches caused by alopecia present as round, completely bald patches on the head or body. If you think you have a form of alopecia, then you need to speak to your GP to investigate it and pursue medical treatments. A popular prescription to aid with alopecia is Regaine for women, which helps to reduce the effects of alopecia and improve hair growth.
Stress And Anxiety
A common reason for hair loss is as a symptom of excessive stress and anxiety levels. If you’re experiencing stress or anxiety and your hair is falling out, you will need to treat the psychological reasons for hair loss in order to make it better. Counselling is a great way to help with stress and anxiety and they might be able to advise methods to help cope with worries such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Your GP might also be able to prescribe medication to help you cope with high levels of anxiety too so it’s worth asking for advice on the right medication for your needs.
Postpartum Hair Loss
Following the birth of their baby, many women find that they experience some minor hair loss. Patches of hair loss can appear anywhere on the head but particularly at the front of the hairline. This is caused due to fluctuating hormones that occur in the postpartum period. The good news is that postpartum hair loss is only temporary, and the hair will soon start to regrow.
Genetics
Hair loss can be largely affected by a person’s genetics and family history of hair loss. Although genetics can cause hair loss, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will suffer from hair loss because other family members have. If you do, however, there are luckily more treatments available now to help with replacing lost hair, such as hair transplants and cosmetic products. Some of the ways you can tell if genetics are causing your hair loss are the places in which the hair is falling out. For example, if the hair is falling out towards the top of the head, this could be due to genetics. Hair falling out below the temples is likely to be caused by something else than genetics, such as stress or alopecia.
