There’s something about Cornwall that always feels like a reset button. The coastline, the light, the laid-back energy set the stage for your experience here. Whether you’re craving beaches, waves, or just long walks and good drinks, Cornwall delivers every time.
We kicked off our first night in Newquay on the early May Bank Holiday in the best possible way – sunshine, sea air, and that feeling that summer has officially landed.
Newquay has this effortless charm – part surf town and part seaside escape. It sits proudly among some of the best seaside towns in the UK, with a rhythm that slows you right down the second you arrive.
Staying at the Pentire Hotel, we wandered along the South West Coast Path, an easy, gentle walk which took about 15 minutes. Arriving at Fistral Beach feels like stepping into the heart of British surfing culture. Boards under arms, wetsuits half peeled off, and that easy-going coastal buzz that only Cornwall seems to do so well. This is where the town’s energy really comes alive.

We headed straight to the Boardmasters Beach Bar, which is exactly the kind of spot you want after a walk. Casual, buzzy, sandy-footed vibes, and everyone just soaking up the sea view. There’s a reason this place feels like the unofficial home of sunset drinks in Newquay – it’s relaxed, social, and just a little bit addictive.

It’s not fine dining – and that’s exactly the point. It’s beach food that fits the vibe: casual, satisfying, and best enjoyed with sandy feet and salty hair.
The menu is all about comfort food. Expect things like small plates, soft-shell tacos, loaded flatbreads, loaded fries, and pizzas. There are plenty of veggie and vegan options in the mix, too, making it easy for mixed groups. An allergen list is available if needed.
I had Korean chicken loaded fries with gochujang mayo, sesame seeds and pickled red chilli – salty, spicy, messy perfection. Mum went for mac and cheese loaded fries topped with crispy onions and chives, which she also shared with Ivan.
Drinks are just as much of a draw, with local beers, ciders, wines, cocktails, spritzers, rum and gins. I love a Rattler cider. I visited Healeys Cyder Farm a few years ago, where it’s made – it’s well worth a visit if you’re nearby.

One of the best things about Boardmasters Beach Bar is how dog-friendly it feels. You’ll spot plenty of dogs stretched out beside tables while their owners enjoy sunset drinks and food overlooking Fistral Beach. With outdoor seating, nearby coastal walks and the beach, it’s an easy stop win if you’re looking for somewhere to eat in Newquay with your dog.

As the sun dropped over the horizon, the sky turned soft pink and orange over the ocean. This is why I keep coming back. I love slow evenings, sea views, and food that you’ll think about long after you’ve left. It’s the feeling of being exactly where you’re meant to be, even if it’s just for one night.

This same stretch transforms completely for the Boardmasters Festival – a huge music festival in August that brings surf culture and live music together in one iconic festival in Cornwall. It’s the kind of event where the line-up, beach setting, and atmosphere all collide into something unforgettable, turning the coastline into one big party.
Places to Stay near Boardmasters
Whether you’re after cosy B&Bs, modern hotels, glamping pods or camping, Newquay has plenty of options. If you know when you’d like to travel, try to book as soon as possible. Prices rise as you get closer to the travel date and are usually displayed per room rather than per person. However, there is a vast array to accommodate all budgets, and keep an eye out for special offers.

Pentire Hotel is a great base, especially if you’re travelling with a dog. It’s dog-friendly in selected rooms, so your pup can come along for the Cornish adventure too. The hotel also has a heated indoor pool, perfect for a post-beach unwind, plus comfortable, modern rooms, many of which offer sea views. You can book a breakfast, but I’d recommend the 5-minute walk to Fern Pit Cafe for plenty of brunch options, including a crab benedict.

Fistral Beach Car Park has 200 spaces. In summer, these fill up quickly. The spots are pay-and-display, but are free late evening. No overnight parking is allowed.
