Perched above the beautiful River Gannel in Newquay, Fern Pit Cafe is one of Cornwall’s most scenic brunch and seafood spots. Known for its panoramic estuary views, fresh locally caught seafood landed from the family’s own boat, and laid-back coastal atmosphere, this dog-friendly café has become a favourite for everything from cream teas to lunches. We visited for breakfast, and honestly, it completely lived up to the hype. With free parking, stunning views across to Crantock Beach, Fern Pit Cafe perfectly captures the charm of a traditional Cornish coastal restaurant.

Fern Pit Cafe Newquay
Most people head to Cornwall for the beaches. I go for the crab benedict. There are some places you visit because they’re trendy. Some because they’ve gone viral on TikTok. And then there are places like Fern Pit Cafe – somewhere you visit because people keep whispering the same thing: you need to try the crab. And honestly? They were right.
First Impressions
Tucked above the beautiful River Gannel on Riverside Crescent, Fern Pit feels like the kind of place locals desperately hope tourists don’t discover. It’s relaxed, welcoming and completely unfussy in the best possible way.
The cafe sits overlooking the estuary with panoramic coastal views stretching across toward Crantock Beach. On a sunny day, the outdoor seating area must be unreal, although during our visit, the Cornish wind was absolutely feral, so we stayed safely indoors, clutching pots of tea instead. Still, even from inside, the view was stunning.
It has that classic Cornwall charm where everyone looks relaxed, and seafood is genuinely the star of the show.
Fern Pit Cafe Menu
If you’re into seafood, the Fern Pit is dangerous territory because you’ll want absolutely everything. They’re especially known for their fish dishes and locally caught seafood, much of it landed from their own boat, Excelsior. That instantly gives the whole place a fresher, family-run feel that chains could never recreate.
But there was only one thing on my mind.
Crab Benedict
The Fern Pit Crab Benedict deserves main-character energy.
Hand-picked Cornish crab piled onto toasted brioche with two fried St Ewe free-range eggs, guacamole and buttery hollandaise. It tastes sensational.
The sweetness of the crab pairs perfectly with the richness of the hollandaise. Every bite tasted ridiculously fresh, and you can genuinely tell the seafood is the focus of the business here.
I would return to Cornwall purely to order it again.
Eggs Benedict
Mum went for the Eggs Benedict. Served on a soft toasted brioche bun, it came stacked with delicate Parma ham, smashed avocado (usually, Mum doesn’t like this, so I asked for it to be removed), and two perfectly fried St Ewe free-range eggs, all covered in a rich, buttery hollandaise sauce. The yolks were gloriously runny, soaking into the brioche beneath. It felt indulgent without being too heavy.
Vegetarian, Vegan & Allergies
There are several vegetarian and vegan-friendly dishes, so non-seafood eaters still have plenty of choice. Options include vegetarian Cornish hash, Eggs ‘N’ Avocado, Moroccan-spiced hummus, halloumi “fish” and chips, pancakes, waffles and granola pots, alongside vegan sides such as smashed avocado and hash browns.
The menu is also clearly labelled with vegetarian (V), vegan (VG), and gluten-free (GFA) alternatives, making ordering much easier if you have dietary requirements. Staff encourage guests to speak to the team about allergies before ordering, although, as everything is freshly prepared in the same kitchen, they can’t guarantee a cross-contamination-free environment.
More Than Just Breakfast
Although we visited for brunch, the restaurant menu is packed with seafood dishes that people clearly travel for. Some of the standouts include:
- Newquay Bay lobster landed from their own boat
- Whole smashed brown crab Cajun boil
- Cornish oysters from nearby Porthilly Shellfish
- Moules frites
- Seafood summer chowder
- Crispy crab cakes
- Retro scampi baskets
- Fresh market catch of the day
It’s very much one of those menus where Cornwall’s coastline completely inspired the food. Even the simpler dishes sound elevated. The Crabby Monsieur – a crab-loaded twist on a croque monsieur – nearly swayed me to come back for lunch.
Fern Pit Cafe Newquay Prices
Fern Pit Cafe sits in the mid-to-premium price range. Breakfast dishes typically range from around £8.50 for lighter plates up to about £19 for signature options like the Crab Benedict. Larger seafood and lunch dishes sit roughly between £18 and £40, with items like moules frites, fish and chips, and lobster taking the higher end of the scale, depending on the catch and season.
Drinks and sides are more modest, usually from around £3.95–£6.50, making it easy to keep things affordable if you’re just stopping for coffee or a light bite – but most people come here for a proper Cornwall “treat meal” with a view.
Dog-Friendly Restaurant
My rescue dog, Ivan, joined us and spent most of the visit dramatically sulking beneath the table because we wouldn’t share. The Fern Pit is brilliantly dog-friendly, though, which instantly makes me love a place more. There’s space, water bowls, outdoor seating and zero awkwardness about bringing your dog along.
For anyone planning to explore the north and south Cornwall coastline with their pup, this is an ideal brunch or lunch stop.
One of Cornwall’s Best Brunch Spots
Fern Pit Cafe Crantock isn’t trying too hard, and that’s exactly why it works.
It feels like the kind of independent Cornwall cafe people return to year after year. No gimmicks. No overstyled interiors designed purely for Instagram photos, though it is beautifully decorated. Just excellent seafood, friendly staff, huge portions and one of the best coastal settings in Cornwall.
You could easily spend hours here over brunch, cream teas or cocktails simply watching the tide roll through the estuary. It genuinely felt special.

Fern Pit Cafe Parking
There’s free parking, which in Newquay feels almost revolutionary, and it’s only around a five-minute walk from parts of the estuary and beach paths. However, there are only a handful of spaces, so you may need to park on a nearby road and walk. We stayed at the Pentire Hotel Newquay, which was a 5-minute walk.
During the summer months, the ferry crossing over the estuary is another fun way to reach Crantock Beach from the Newquay side.

Open seven days a week, but check the out-of-season operating hours.

Accessibility
Fern Pit Cafe is set mainly on one level, although there is a slope down to the cafe and garden area. There are some steps to some outdoor seating, which can be uneven underfoot. If you catch the ferry, there are steep stairs up to the cafe, and again on the way back down. It’s worth checking ahead if you have specific mobility requirements.
