There are country pubs, and then there’s The Bulls Head Wilmslow – one of those gloriously unpretentious places that somehow manages to straddle the line between rustic charm and a full-on fever dream of flavours. Part of the Chef and Brewer collection, the Bulls Head offers personality on a plate.

This visit came after our friends who live in Handforth heard it named on a local list of the best pubs in Wilmslow – and frankly, the Bulls Head Handforth menu intrigued me. I expected pub grub, and it was actually decent. It’s become our “local” when visiting, as it’s dog-friendly and child-friendly. The beer garden is also a beautiful suntrap, perfect for the summer months. More Wilmslow restaurants should take notes.
So, What’s On The Wilmslow Menu?
Some of the starters we’ve tried include the Creamy Garlic Mushrooms – fat flat field mushrooms grilled to a smoky whisper, drenched in wild garlic butter and mounted atop toasted sourdough. The creamy garlic sauce was unapologetically rich.
Meanwhile, the Pan-Fried King Prawns delivered a punchy bravas sauce with the odd whisper of paprika and a tongue-tingling finish. The garlic butter here felt lighter, greener – a perfect foil for the sweet, meaty prawns.
But the standout? The Sticky Barbecue Chicken Strips are encased in a glossy Korean barbecue glaze, so rich that it could reflect the view from the window. Fragrant with fresh chilli and coriander, it tiptoed right up to the edge of ‘too sweet’ – then reined itself back in with that thrum of spice.
Main Courses = Big Plates
The Duo of Chicken is a new addition to the Wilmslow menu. A generous breast, charred but juicy, joined forces with those same sticky BBQ chicken strips from earlier – this time served over a mound of basmati and wild rice, crowned with kimchi and slivers of cucumber. The chicken was moist, the rice fluffy, and the kimchi added a needed spike of acid.
The Mixed Grill was the ultimate ‘treat yourself’ dish – a favourite of the boys who love meat and large portions. A four-meat lineup – 4oz rump, grilled chicken breast, gammon, and a frankly brilliant Cumberland sausage – joined by the obligatory fried egg and a stack of fat chips. Carnivores, rejoice. There’s nothing refined about it, but it doesn’t need to be.
For burger fans, the Crispy Chicken Burger took some beating. The rosemary-marinated chicken fillet was moist inside its crisp coat, piled high with bacon, Blackstone Vintage Cheddar, bacon and ale jam and enough roasted garlic mayo to offend vampires within a 10-mile radius. Served with spicy mayo on the side, this one was a total win for me.
But the Signature Burger? That’s where things got silly. A thick, hand-pressed beef patty plus slow-roasted beef rib plus merlot-beef gravy plus cheddar plus a hit of Marmite mayo. Honestly, it felt like three Sunday roasts got lost and ended up in a bap. But against all logic – it worked.

The team at The Bulls Head Wilmslow understands their audience’s cravings – bold food, hearty mains, rich sauces, and dishes that demand both hands and a napkin. This is one of those restaurants in Wilmslow that embraces comfort and crowd-pleasers, reminiscent of the good old days of pubs. It’s a place where you can relax, knowing that you’re in for a satisfying and enjoyable dining experience.
Yes, it’s part of the chain. But don’t let that put you off. The Bulls Head Chef and Brewer Wilmslow has its own spirit. It’s one of those rare places to eat in Wilmslow where you know the chef was having fun – possibly a bit too much fun – and that enthusiasm makes it to the plate. You’ll be welcome with open arms.

The rooms are stylish and comfortable, the lounge and bar areas are perfect for relaxing with a drink, and the peaceful surroundings make it a great escape. It’s easy to get to, with on-site parking and free WiFi. While it’s tucked away from the hustle and bustle, getting into central Wilmslow or nearby Manchester Airport is simple.
