What makes Beaujolais Day in Swansea unique?

The best wine party is the uncorking of Beaujolais Nouveau from the Beaujolais Region. At one minute past midnight on the third Thursday of November every year, over a million cases of Beaujolais leave France for different destinations across the globe.

Traditionally, Brits would drive to Dover and get the ferry to France. They would load up their boot with Beaujolais and other affordable wines, beers and spirits and return to the UK. Now, it has become a party day where friends or business colleagues meet for good food, exclusive offers, entertainment and, of course, a glass of wine.

Why is Beaujolais Day celebrated in Swansea?

Swansea is famously passionate about Beaujolais Day, often calling it “Swansea’s Christmas.” The celebration’s roots trace back to the 1960s when former Wales rugby captain Clem Thomas, who owned the No Sign Wine Bar, began importing Beaujolais Nouveau directly from his home region in France. This early access and the first bottles helped spark the city’s enthusiasm for the event, which has since become a major annual social occasion.
