Arriving at Jersey Mont Orgueil Castle is like stepping into a Game of Thrones episode – minus the dragons. The castle looms over the quaint, picturesque village of Gorey. Wander up the winding path to the medieval fortress gate.
Upon entering, you’re greeted by a labyrinth of rooms, staircases, and hidden passages. It’s a veritable playground for the curious. If you’ve ever fancied yourself as a knight, a damsel (not necessarily in distress), or even a court jester, this is your moment.
When translated from French, Mont Orgueil means Mount Pride.
Mont Orgueil Castle History
Let’s dive into the history because Mont Orgueil has it in spades. When was Mont Orgueil Castle built? The castle was erected in 1204 to defend against the French. This fortress has seen it all – sieges, royal visits, and even a stint as a prison. Henry VII, Charles II, and Queen Elizabeth I have all been associated with the castle.
Over the centuries, Mont Orgueil has evolved from a medieval stronghold to a Renaissance palace and, finally, a historic monument. Each era has left its mark, and exploring the castle feels like flipping through history’s greatest hits.
Architecturally, the heritage castle is a feast for the eyes. It is a jumble of towers, turrets, and tunnels, all crafted with the kind of intricate detail that would make even the most ambitious Lego set blush. The medieval architects clearly had a flair for drama – spiral staircases that lead to nowhere, hidden chambers perfect for plotting intrigue, and battlements that offer stunning views of the distant French coast, Gorey Harbour, and the surrounding landscape.

Mont Orgueil isn’t just a place for history buffs to admire from a distance. It’s surprisingly hands-on, offering a tactile, immersive experience for all. From trying on medieval armour to exploring the castle’s numerous passageways, it’s a journey that brings history to life. The interactive displays are a hit with kids and adults who are young at heart. And don’t miss the chance to climb into the replica of the oubliette – a medieval dungeon where prisoners were forgotten.
1. The Tudor Chamber: This room is a time capsule from the era of Henry VII. Imagine the intrigue and scandal that unfolded here. If these walls could gossip…
2. The Witchcraft Exhibit: Jersey has a fascinating history with witchcraft trials, and this exhibit delves into the island’s dark and mysterious past. It’s spooky and intriguing, telling the story of those convicted, banished, or executed.
3. The Dance of Death Statue: A somewhat macabre yet utterly fascinating sculpture that depicts death leading a merry dance of skeletons. It’s a medieval reminder that life is fleeting.
4. The Roof Terrace: Speaking of views, the roof terrace is the castle’s pièce de résistance. It offers panoramic vistas of the sea, the coastline, and on a clear day, France. It’s the perfect spot for a selfie or a moment of quiet reflection. Just bear in mind there are over 200 steps to the top. But it’s one of the best views in Jersey.
5. The Perfect Knight: Discover the legacy of Sir Hugh Calveley, a knight who epitomised chivalry and bravery. His life-sized statue, clad in full armour, is a tribute to his heroic deeds and contributions to Jersey’s history.
6. The 3D Queen: One of the most interesting things to see is the unique work by artist Chris Levine and holographer Robert Munday. The image is that of the icon Queen Elizabeth II, which was commissioned in 2003 on behalf of the island to mark 800 years of Jersey’s allegiance to the Crown.
7. Wheel of Urine: Dive into the peculiarities of medieval medicine with the Wheel of Urine. This quirky exhibit showcases how physicians diagnosed ailments based on the colour and consistency of urine. It’s a fascinating, albeit slightly gross, glimpse into the health practices of the past.

One of the highlights is the Summer Nights Session, where there are live DJ sets – think Ibiza at sunset. You can bring your own drinks, picnic, and blanket.

A Quick Visitor’s Guide
While the castle has made efforts to be accessible, its medieval design means some areas are challenging for those with mobility issues. There are accessible routes and facilities, but it’s best to contact the castle ahead of your visit for detailed information.
The castle grounds are expansive and include a fair bit of walking, so comfortable shoes are necessary. There’s uneven ground, steps, and a treasure trove of nooks and crannies.
With its dramatic scenery and historic architecture, Mont Orgeuil Castle is a photographer’s dream. Remember your camera (or make sure your phone is fully charged) to capture the memories.
Top Tip: Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and get the best light for photography.

Easily accessible by car, bus, or a leisurely bike ride. Is there parking at Mont Orgueil Castle? There is no dedicated car park. However, there’s limited on-the-road parking and car parks in Gorey village.

Mont Orgueil Castle Prices
How much to get in Gorey Castle? The 2024 castle-only tickets are £16.60 per adult, with reductions for children, students, seniors, and families. There is no need to make a booking; tickets are available on the day.
Or, buy a Jersey Heritage Pass, which gives you access to four attractions for the price of three and unlimited re-entry over seven days. Other heritage sites include Elizabeth Castle, Hamptonne Country Life Museum and the Maritime Museum.
Mont Orgueil Castle Opening Times
Mont Orgueil Castle Jersey is open between 10am and 5.30pm from March to October and from 10am to 4pm from November to December. The last entry is an hour before closing time.

The elegant bedroom had a shower and a separate bathtub. The hotel has top-notch amenities, including a luxurious spa, a state-of-the-art gym, and an indoor swimming pool. There’s also a bar, an outdoor terrace bar, and two restaurants. Tassili is a 4 AA Rosette restaurant with a 7-course tasting menu.
Its prime location provides easy access to the island’s main attractions, including a bus stop outside and across the road, making it an ideal base for exploring Jersey’s natural beauty and rich history. The breakfast room also looks across to Elizabeth Castle.
