Jersey has a vast maritime past; the sea and its accompanying professions are part of the Island’s national heritage. Today, the museum is spread across five linked warehouses and a Victorian house in the harbour area. Here, you can learn and discover fascinating things.

Jersey Maritime Museum Reviews

Anchors aweigh! The Jersey Maritime Museum is a unique blend of history, interactive experiences, and nautical charm. It’s a place where both young and old can immerse themselves in the captivating tales of the sea. The museum’s distinct offerings make it a must-visit, especially for those seeking to delve deeper into the history of Jersey and the Channel Islands.

In Jersey Harbour in St. Helier, the Jersey Maritime Museum promises visitors exhibits that weave together like the rigging on an old ship. There’s a sense of stepping back in time. You can almost hear the hum of ship bells and the gentle creak of wooden ships as you immerse yourself in Jersey’s maritime history, rich seafaring past, and the Island’s story during World War Two under German armed forces.

What to Expect

The heart of the museum is undoubtedly its collection of model ships. From dainty fishing boats to imposing warships, these meticulously crafted replicas offer a glimpse into the vessels that have graced Jersey’s waters. The detail is staggering, and one can’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship.

The museum offers a range of hands-on experiences for those who prefer a more interactive approach to history. Visitors can hoist sails, tie knots, and engage with other uniquely interactive displays, making their visit a truly immersive and educational experience.

No maritime museum worth its salt would be complete without a hearty dose of seafaring tales. The Jersey Maritime Museum delivers in spades with fascinating stories of daring explorers, intrepid fishermen, and the occasional smuggler. These narratives are brought to life through vivid displays and, in some cases, (not so) lifelike mannequins (that are blue!).

The Occupation Tapestry Gallery

The Islanders’ remarkable creation, the 13 panels of woven tapestry, is a unique window into life during the German occupation. These masterpieces, now displayed in an art gallery, were woven to commemorate the 50th anniversary of liberation. The project’s immense community support makes it a testament to the Islanders’ resilience and spirit.

The Gift Shop

No visit to a museum is complete without a trip to the gift shop. So, whether you’re after a souvenir for yourself or a gift for a fellow maritime aficionado, there’s something for everyone. There are also local trinkets related to Jersey.

Jersey Maritime Museum St Helier

So, there you have it. The Jersey Maritime Museum is a unique maritime environment. A tidal wave of enjoyment just waiting to be explored. Grab your tricorn hat, muster your best pirate accent, and set sail for a day of maritime merriment.

Alternatively, you can reach Jersey by ferry from ports in England and France, with regular ferries and sailings throughout the year.

I flew from Bristol on Blue Islands, while our friends were on EasyJet from Manchester.ย The flight was only 50 minutes, and 23kg of luggage is included as standard (per person), plus your carry-on bag.

Grand Jersey Hotel

Staying at the Grand Hotel Jersey offers an exceptional experience that combines luxury, comfort, and stunning views of St Aubinโ€™s Bay. You may think staying at a 5-star hotel is an unnecessary extravagance. I’m usually happy with a classic, clean, central hotel, but this was totally worth the few extra pounds. When you book 3 nights or more, you get 33% off, and breakfast is included each morning.

The elegant bedroom had a shower and a separate bathtub. The hotel has top-notch amenities, including a luxurious spa, a state-of-the-art gym, and an indoor swimming pool. There’s also a bar, an outdoor terrace bar, and two restaurants. Tassili is a 4 AA Rosette restaurant with a 7-course tasting menu.

Its prime location provides easy access to the island’s main attractions, including a bus stop outside and across the road, making it an ideal base for exploring Jersey’s natural beauty and rich history. The breakfast room also looks across to Elizabeth Castle.
