A History Buff’s Wonderland
Picture this: it’s 1941, and the Nazis have occupied Jersey. They decided to carve out a vast German underground hospital and barracks to protect against Allied air raids. Fast forward to today, and what was once a grim wartime necessity has transformed into an intriguing museum that takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions.
Spoiler alert: the Nazis didn’t end up needing the hospital for its intended use, but hey, it makes for one heck of a tourist attraction now.

The Adventure Begins
Upon arrival at the Jersey War Tunnels you’re given an identity card. These are copies of the real registration cards the German authorities made compulsory for every islander to carry. It included name, maiden name, address, date and place of birth, occupation, military experience and distinguishing features. Later in the tour, you learn the person’s fate on your card.

Going Underground
As you descend, you can almost hear the echoes of the Jersey War Tunnels history whispering in your ear. The temperature drops, giving you a real sense of what it must have been like for those who worked here. It’s a bit like stepping into a time machine โ minus the DeLorean and flux capacitor. Each section of the tunnels has been meticulously restored and packed with educational and deeply moving exhibits.
It was interesting to learn why the Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans and not the United Kingdom during World War II. And what life was like under Nazi occupation. Jersey was liberated on 9 May 1945.

Who Said History Was Boring?
One of the highlights of the Jersey War Tunnels is its interactive exhibits. Imagine touching, seeing, and hearing the past come alive. You can almost feel the trepidation of the islanders as they faced occupation. The exhibitions are thoughtfully laid out, blending personal stories with broader historical context. There’s even a recreation of an air raid shelter where you can experience the terrifying reality of wartime bombings โ all from the safety of a simulated environment, of course.

One of the most convenient and eco-friendly ways to reach the Jersey War Tunnels from St Helier is by bus. It was so easy! I’m not always confident using public transport when travelling. Is it reliable? Will the buses turn up on time? How busy will they be? I was impressed with the service from Liberty Bus.
Head to the Liberation Station in St Helier, the main bus terminalโor one of the other stops along the route. Look for Bus No. 8, which is the direct route to the War Tunnels. The journey takes about 20 minutes.

Staying at the Grand Hotel Jersey offers an exceptional experience that combines luxury, comfort, and stunning views of St Aubinโs Bay.
