Elizabeth Castle Jersey Review
It’s an ongoing joke amongst my friends that wherever I travel, I’ll end up at a castle. Being from Wales, the land of castles, you’d think I’d be bored of them. But Elizabeth Castle in Jersey is a unique experience that I couldn’t resist. Not only was at the top of my list of things to do in St Helier, but I could see it from the breakfast room and outdoor terrace of the Grand Jersey Hotel, where I was staying. I was eager to learn its story and how it’s thrived over the years.
Getting There: A Journey Fit for Royalty
Let’s start with the journey, shall we? Unlike your average museum or historical site, where you simply drive up and park, Elizabeth Castle adds a dash of adventure to your arrival. Perched on a tidal island in St. Aubin’s Bay, it’s accessible by foot during low tide via a causeway that emerges from the sea. When the tides are high, you’re in for a treat: hop aboard the castle’s amphibious castle ferry. As you trundle across the beach, take a moment to take in the panoramic views of the coastline.
A Brief History Lesson
Elizabeth Castle isn’t just a pretty face; it’s a historical treasure trove. Built in the 16th century and named after Queen Elizabeth I, this fortress has a rich history. From the English Civil War when King Charles II sought refuge to German occupation during World War Two, it has stood steadfast through sieges, bombings, and the odd royal visit. Its walls are steeped in history, waiting to be explored.
One of the most fascinating characters associated with Elizabeth Castle is Sir Walter Raleigh, who served as its Governor from 1600 to 1603. It’s said that he planted a garden here and spent his leisure time gazing out to sea, perhaps dreaming up his next voyage. While there’s no guarantee you’ll channel Raleigh’s seafaring spirit, you will find plenty of spots to sit and contemplate life’s great mysteries (or where to get the best fish and chips in Jersey).
Exploring the Castle
Once you’ve crossed the causeway and entered the castle, you’re free to explore at your own pace. If you prefer a more structured experience, join one of the guided tours. Knowledgeable guides lead you through the castle’s highlights, peppering their commentary with fascinating anecdotes and little-known facts. It’s a great way to get the most out of your visit, especially if you’re a history enthusiast.
For a glimpse into the grittier side of castle life, head to the Barracks and Hospital. Here, you’ll find exhibits detailing the daily lives of soldiers, complete with uniforms, weapons, and medical equipment. It’s a stark reminder of the hardships faced by those who called the castle home.
Next, make your way to the Parade Ground, the heart of the castle. Imagine the hustle and bustle of soldiers drilling, cannons being primed, and the occasional royal inspection. Today, it’s a tranquil space where you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the panoramic vistas of the bay. (Well, it would be, but they were restoring Elizabeth Castle during my visit, so there was drilling, banging and high-vis).
Explore Some More
Don’t miss the Governor’s House, where you can delve into the lives of the castle’s most notable residents. The house is a charming mix of period furniture, informative displays, and, occasionally, costumed guides who bring the past to life with gusto. Keep an eye out for the portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh – rumour has it he’s watching to ensure you don’t skip any of the exhibits.
The furthest part of the castle is the Hermitage, a tiny chapel perched on a rocky outcrop. Legend has it that this was the retreat of St. Helier, Jersey’s patron saint, who lived here in the 6th century. From the top, you’re offered spiritual serenity and stunning views.
No visit to Elizabeth Castle would be complete without a stroll along the ramparts. Climb to the top and be rewarded with 360-degree views of Jersey and the surrounding waters. On a clear day, you can see all the way to France. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic, a bit of birdwatching, or just letting the wind tousle your hair.
Activities and Events
Elizabeth Castle isn’t just about static displays and historical reenactments (though it does those exceptionally well). The castle hosts various events and activities throughout the year, making each visit unique.
On Living History Days, the castle truly comes alive. Actors in period costumes recreate scenes from the past, from musket drills to cooking demonstrations. These events are not just informative but also a hit with kids and adults alike, offering a fun and immersive way to learn about the castle’s storied past.
Keep an eye on the calendar for special events, such as summer night sessions, concerts, theatre performances, and seasonal celebrations. There’s something magical about watching a play against the backdrop of ancient stone walls or enjoying a concert as the sun sets over the Channel Islands. You can also get married at the castle, so you may witness someone’s big day when you visit.

The causeway to the castle is only accessible at low tide, so it’s crucial to check the Elizabeth Castle tide times before you go. If you’re not keen on wading through waist-deep water, plan your visit accordingly. The amphibious ferry is an excellent alternative if the tides aren’t in your favour.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
The castle grounds are expansive and include a fair bit of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must. There’s uneven ground, steps, and a treasure trove of nooks and crannies.
Pack a Picnic
A picnic on the ramparts with a view of the bay is a quintessential Jersey experience. Just remember to take your rubbish with you; we want to keep this slice of history pristine. Or, if you want to keep your hands free, the café offers hot and cold drinks and light snacks.
Bring a Camera
With its dramatic scenery and historic architecture, Elizabeth Castle is a photographer’s dream. Remember your camera (or make sure your phone is fully charged) to capture the memories.

Jersey Elizabeth Castle Ticket Prices
The 2024 castle-only tickets are £15.95 per adult, with reductions for children, students, seniors, and families. There is no need to make a booking; tickets are available on the day.
Or, buy a Jersey Heritage Pass, which gives you access to four attractions for the price of three and unlimited re-entry over seven days. Other sites include Mont Orgueil Castle and the Maritime Museum.
The walk to Elizabeth Castle is exposed at low tide. The cobbled slipway and causeway are 1km from the beach. It takes around 15 minutes to cross. The tide comes in quickly, so double-check before you start.
Elizabeth Castle Ferry Price
Entry to the castle and Elizabeth Ferry is £19.65 per person, with reductions for children, students, seniors, and families. Tickets can be purchased at the castle ferry kiosk. The Elizabeth Castle Ferry Times are every 30 minutes during opening hours.
Elizabeth Castle Opening Times
The castle is open between 10am and 5.30pm from March to October. The last ferry from the castle is at 5pm. But double-check before you visit, as occasionally they close because of wind and tide conditions.
How Long Do You Spend at Elizabeth Castle Jersey?
Visitors typically spend about two to three hours exploring, depending on their interest in the exhibits and interactive displays.

St. Helier is easily accessible by air and sea. Jersey Airport, located just a short drive from the town centre, offers regular flights from various UK airports and mainland Europe. Alternatively, you can reach Jersey by ferry from ports in England and France, with regular ferries and sailings throughout the year.
I flew from Bristol on Blue Islands, while our friends were on EasyJet from Manchester. The flight was only 50 minutes, and 23kg of luggage is included as standard (per person), plus your carry-on bag.

The elegant bedroom had a shower and a separate bathtub. The hotel has top-notch amenities, including a luxurious spa, a state-of-the-art gym, and an indoor swimming pool. There’s also a bar, an outdoor terrace bar, and two restaurants. Tassili is a 4 AA Rosette restaurant with a 7-course tasting menu.
Its prime location provides easy access to the island’s main attractions, including a bus stop outside and across the road, making it an ideal base for exploring Jersey’s natural beauty and rich history. The breakfast room also looks across to Elizabeth Castle.
