15 things we learnt from Meghan and Harry’s Oprah Interview

I’m not a fan of Meghan, but even before the interview aired, I thought the way she has been treated was abhorrent. The British public has not accepted her, which could have been swayed by how she has been portrayed. But, even from the beginning, we could see Harry was head over heels.

1. Meghan had suicidal thoughts

The extraordinary two-hour interview with chat show host Oprah Winfrey aired in the UK on Monday 8th March 2021, on ITV. Prince Harry and Meghan also shared clips of their new life in California. Also, an adorable home video of Archie playing on the beach with his parents and dogs. So, here are some of the bombshell revelations:

The Duchess of Sussex revealed she had suicidal thoughts as she struggled with life inside the royal family. Hours before a noteworthy appearance at the Royal Albert Hall, she told Harry that she “did not want to live anymore.” Meghan appeared tearful during the extensive interview when she described the hidden pain.

Meghan said she feared what she might do if left alone. Therefore, she kept a tight grip on Harry’s hand as she was photographed at the event. “Every time those lights went down in that Royal Box, I was just weeping.”

2. Meghan had help from one of Diana’s friends

Meghan said she begged for help, asked to go somewhere to get help, and approached one of the most senior people in the institution but was told it would not look good. She said Harry had cradled her when she was in the depths of despair and how she sought help from one of Diana, Princess of Wales’s best friends.

3. Racism in the British Press

During Meghan and Harry’s Oprah Interview, the host asked the Prince if the couple left the UK because of racism. The Duke responded, “The UK is not bigoted; the UK press is bigoted, specifically the tabloids.” Harry said the “relationship and that control and the fear by the UK tabloids, it’s a really, it’s a toxic environment”.

Finally, Meghan and Oprah briefly discussed the article showcasing the tabloid headlines’ comparing her with Kate Middleton. Including cradling baby bumps and eating avocados. The tabloids suggested that Meghan eating avocado toast is “fueling human-rights abuses, drought, and murder.” “You have to laugh at a certain point because it’s just ridiculous,” Meghan said. “That’s a loaded piece of toast,” she added.

4. A senior royal is accused of racism

When pregnant with Archie, an unnamed senior member of the Royal Family raised “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.” The conversation was had with Prince Harry, who refused to name who it was, claiming it would be damaging. “That conversion, I am never going to share. At the time, it was awkward. I was a bit shocked.”

5. Harry’s relationship with his father

Harry admitted that his father had stopped taking his phone calls. Speaking of his father, he said, “I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar, he knows what pain feels like, (and) Archie’s his grandson. But at the same time, I will always love him. But there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened…”

6. There’s a rift between William and Harry

So, one of the biggest disappointments was hearing that there is a rift between Princes William and Harry. The pair I have grown up with, as they are my age, have continued in their mother’s footsteps. They seem to have Diana’s fun-loving personality and compassion.

It was revealed during the interview that the rift between Harry and William continues. Harry admitted, “The relationship is space at the moment. And time heals all things, hopefully.”

7. The Duchess of Cambridge made Meghan cry

Meghan said that Kate made her cry ahead of the wedding at a bridesmaid fitting. At the time, it was reported this was the other way around. As a result, The Duchess said Kate was “upset about some things and she owned it and apologised” and sent flowers. But Meghan added that the false reports were a turning point. After that she said, “everyone in the institution knew that wasn’t true”, and she hoped Kate “would have wanted that to be corrected”, adding “she is a good person”.

8. They did not blindside the queen

So, Oprah asked Prince Harry an open question; “Did you blindside the Queen?” Prince Harry gave a candid answer back; “No, I never blindsided my grandmother. I have too much respect for her.”

Prince Harry is referring to his announcement of leaving his royal duties. At the time, some publications suggested that he blindsided the Queen with the news, giving her no warning. Instead, he claims in the Oprah interview that he had three conversations with the Queen about the decision beforehand. Harry also claims to have put the plan in writing and specified that date the announcement would happen.

9. The queen embraced Meghan into the family

It was revealed that The Queen gave Meghan “some beautiful pearl earrings and a matching necklace” for the couple’s first joint engagement together. Also, on the train journey, the queen shared the blanket she puts across her knees with Meghan.

For instance, Harry said he “never thought” he would have his security detail removed upon deciding to step back from royal duties. He said: “I was born into this position. I inherited the risk. So that was a shock to me.”

13. Why they left the Royal Family

Asked by Winfrey why they left, Harry blamed a “lack of support and lack of understanding”. He said members of his family suggested Meghan should carry on acting “because there was not enough money to pay for her”.

He added: “There were some real obvious signs, before we even got married, that this was going to be really hard.” Meghan said her one regret was “believing them when they said I would be protected”.

Harry said he had been “trapped within the system, like the rest of my family are”. In other words, “My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave,” he added.

14. Archie’s title

Meghan suggested she and Harry wanted Archie to be a prince so he would have security and be protected. The Duchess expressed her shock at “the idea of our son not being safe”, and the idea of the first member of colour in this family not being titled in the same way as other grandchildren.
