Marketing Series – World Creativity and Innovation Day

You have heard the phrase ‘Insanity is doing the same thing, the same way, over and over while expecting different results.’ Sometimes all it takes is a new set of eyes or some creativity to change habits and old problems, to help you reach those goals.  So, let’s say no more static boring routine and the same old sameness and get innovative.

How to be creative in business?

You do not have to work in a creative field to ask yourself this question.  Imagination and innovation are concerns many people in business have, regardless if it is their own business or if they are working for someone, as well as the niche or industry.  When you are driven by the passion or the cause, you want to make sure your work stands out.  You want to be noticed, and you will not get there if you blend in with the crowd.

Ask yourself, how creative are you in your business?

You do not need to think of yourself as an extraordinarily inventive person to apply creativity to your work.  Whether you do have an artistic inkling or analytical, there are steps you can take to maximise your natural ability to be creative, because we are all original no matter what you think.

Creative thinking involves breaking down and restructuring our knowledge about something to gain new insight.  When we organise our thoughts in a way that leads to a different and even better understanding of the process, subject or the situation.  It also does not mean you have to reinvent the wheel.  True innovative thinking comes about by putting different thoughts together in a way that you have not done before.

Tips on how to inspire creativity for your business?

  1. Be playful

As children we had idea after idea about everything and anything, changing the conversation direction very quickly.  Do not judge every idea you get, try developing a child-like and curious mentality to it.  Nothing is a bad idea, and it has potential, be excited about it, learn how it can work and operate.  Ignore all expectations and rules of society and just let go.

  1. Brainstorm and collaborate with other people

Even if you are introverted, collaborating and throwing ideas around with a group often works wonders in igniting your creative juices.  It could be working with a business coach to consider the next steps for personal or business development, finding your local networking group or a business forum where you can talk about your successes, challenges and goals.

  1. Take a break

Sometimes to produce a creative breakthrough you need to take a break – rest, relax and recharge.  Take a walk, research shows people come up with more ideas while walking than standing still.  Many put value in meditation and mindfulness and with regular practise it has been connected to greater creativity.

  1. Reduce time pressures

Deadlines have been shown to make people less resourceful.  So, while you may, at times, be forced to be creative with last-minute problems you will probably be at your creative best in a more relaxed environment and not under pressure to deliver results quickly.

  1. Change of scenery

Do you have to work in the same place day after day? If you can, find somewhere new to generate ideas.  It could be your local library, coffee shop, a great outdoor space. Merely changing the physical environment will help you to significantly boost your inspiration and get outside of your familiar thought patterns.

  1. Doodle

In school were always reprimanded for doodling and not paying attention.  Contrary to popular opinion it does not demonstrate a lack of focus.  It can help you stay present and engaged during an activity in which you might otherwise find your mind drifting.  Apparently, some of the greatest thinkers including Henry Ford and Steve Jobs used doodling to jump-start their creativity.

  1. Don’t get distracted

It is so easy to get quickly to pick up your phone, scroll through social media or watch a few funny videos on YouTube.  Equally, it is also difficult for you to enter your creative zone if you are being interrupted by family, colleagues or neighbours.  Try to find a quiet place, turn off any distractions and get to work.

When is World Creativity and Innovation Day?

It is celebrated every year on the 21st of April, but it does not mean that it is the only day you can be imaginative.

The day was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, who was born in 1452.  He set the standard for what it meant to be a Renaissance man excelling in both the arts and sciences.  He invented many methods we use in mathematics, music, geology, astronomy and cartography, to name a few, today.  With his logical approach to the world was genuinely advanced and unusual for his time.  World Creativity and Innovation Day was established to encourage everyone to dig deep and find their own inner da Vinci.

How will you be celebrating World Creativity Day?

Start the day out by brainstorming, sit down and think of all the things you do during the day and how you might change them for the better. Throughout your day keep a notepad handy for ideas that occur to you, whether they are for your own use or ways that other people can do things better. Got an idea for your local municipality? Send it to them and let them know how you think it may benefit everyone. Got a new idea for your workplace? Inform your bosses and see what they have to say? Got a new plan for you? Set it in motion and see where your creativity gets you. World Creativity and Innovation Day could be the day that set your life on a whole new path!
