How to pack for a holiday with multiple stops

Multi-stop holidays give you more freedom to explore.

Whether you’re going solo or travelling with friends, booking more than one destination means making the most of your time away. But before you set off and start the adventure, you’ll need to pack in the right way. Keeping things practical, compact and streamlined will make your trip more enjoyable, so here’s how to get started.

Mastering the challenge

Embarking on a holiday with multiple destinations can be very exciting.

However, the challenge lies in packing for various climates, activities and occasions while you’re there. You might need to consider cultural etiquette and various formalities too. All this can cause some extra stress, and if you’re unlucky, you could get caught out with hefty luggage fees too.

Overpacking can be stressful too, so it’s worth knowing how to pack efficiently without the burden of excessive baggage.

Plan your outfits

Before you open your suitcase, try to review your itinerary carefully.

Think about the duration of each stop, the type of activities you’ve planned, and the typical weather conditions you’d expect while you’re there. This kind of foresight will allow you to pack both practically and realistically.

Instead of packing different outfits for each day, try to create a portable capsule wardrobe. Choose a core colour palette to work around and select your favourite tops, bottoms and layers. Mix and match to create a look that suits your plans and changes with the occasion.

Embrace the power of layering

Layering is the secret to packing light for diverse climates.

Pack lightweight, breathable fabrics that can be added or removed as temperatures fluctuate. Think about a good quality, packable waterproof jacket and a versatile jumper too.

Footwear should be as versatile as possible. A pair of comfortable walking shoes for daytime excursions can also double as smart-casual footwear for evenings.

Prioritise items that serve multiple purposes wherever possible. For instance, a large scarf can act as a shawl for warmth or even a makeshift travel pillow for long journeys. It’s an easy way to reduce the bulk in your luggage.

Roll, don’t fold

Space-saving techniques could make things even easier. To maximise space in your suitcase, we recommend rolling your clothes tightly instead of folding them. This technique minimises wrinkles, keeping your clothes neat and presentable, while also helping you pack more!

Some people find packing cubes helpful. These will help you to keep your suitcase organised and make it easier to find specific items without rummaging around or pulling everything else out of your bag.

Designate one cube for tops, another for bottoms, and a smaller one for underwear and socks. This approach is especially useful when you’re frequently moving between locations. It mimics the convenience of a walk-in wardrobe at home, allowing you to find individual pieces quickly.

The ‘essentials first’ carry-on strategy

Finally, it’s always worth packing a small carry-on bag with your absolute essentials, regardless of whether your main luggage is checked or not.

This should include:

  • A change of clothes
  • Any daily medications
  • Important documents, including your passport
  • Mobile phone chargers and power banks
  • Anything valuable or difficult to replace.

This strategy provides peace of mind in case your main luggage is delayed or lost, keeping your immediate necessities at hand. It also means you can easily access items during long flights, like a book or headphones, making travel days more comfortable.
