Cruel Intentions Cardiff

If you’re a millennial, who remembers rewinding cassettes with a pencil, agonising over MSN Messenger statuses, renting Cruel Intentions from Blockbuster Video, and proudly owning both the shiny DVD and the Cruel Intentions CD soundtrack, then Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical is your Y2K fever dream come true.

I had the exhilarating experience of witnessing the show live at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. Let me assure you, it’s as juicy, scandalous, and downright fun as the film that inspired it. And that infamous Cruel Intentions Crucifix scene? It’s still iconic, still gasp-worthy, and somehow manages to be both steamy and hilarious. The live performance adds a whole new level of excitement and engagement.

Based on the ’90s cult classic film (which itself was inspired by the French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses), the stage version brings all the wicked scheming, teen angst, and preppy rebellion to life. With killer 90s pop classics including Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn to Christina Aguilera’s Genie in a Bottle and Britney Spears’…Baby One More Time, it’s a mixtape of millennial memories. The show’s interactive nature will have you resisting the urge to sing along and feeling like you’re part of the action.

The Musical Cruel Intentions

Step siblings Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil engage in their twisted little bet, and the tension is as thick as a Nokia 3210. Their plan? Kathryn goads Sebastian to seduce Annette Hargrove, the headmaster’s daughter. But of course, true love and emotional chaos get in the way, and their crusade wreaks havoc on their elite New York prep school world. It’s catty. It’s clever. And it’s chaotic. You’ll love every second.

The show’s self-aware humour cleverly pokes fun at the original Cruel Intentions script in all the right places. You’ll find something to love whether you’re there for the teen melodrama, the fashion throwbacks (those plaid skirts and crop tops!), or just the bangers.

Cruel Intentions Cardiff Cast

Nic Myers dazzles as the manipulative queen bee Kathryn Merteuil, who sets the wheels of drama in motion. With icy glares and razor-sharp one-liners, she commands the stage. She totally nails the role alongside the brooding charm of Will Callan as Sebastian and the innocent Abbie Budden as Annette.

There’s something magical about hearing the ’90s soundtrack featuring R.E.M., Ace of Base, Boyz II Men and more – sung live with full dramatic flair. The cast brings vocal powerhouse moments and just the right amount of sass, especially Lucy Carter as the hilariously naive Cecile and Luke Conner Hall as Blaine, whose chemistry with Joe Simmons’ Greg had the crowd roaring with laughter.

Cruel Intentions Goes Global

After sell-out seasons in London and New York, the UK & Ireland tour of Cruel Intentions the Musical gives fans the ultimate ’90s night out. If the reviews are anything to go by – and they’re glowing – this isn’t just a musical; it’s a movement. A sexy, sparkly, subversive movement.

The production runs in Cardiff until 31 May 2025, so if you’re even considering booking, do it. It’s the perfect excuse to grab your old-school friends, relive your favourite scenes, and belt out *NSYNC lyrics without shame.

Nostalgia, Nailed.

Whether you’re a diehard fan of the film or just in the mood for a night of throwback brilliance, Cruel Intentions Musical hits all the right notes; it’s witty, wicked, and wildly entertaining. Like passing notes in class or quoting Clueless with your besties – it’s a moment in time you’ll want to relive again and again.

And bring tissues – you’ll laugh, cry, and probably scream, “Oh my God, I LOVE this song!” more times than you can count.
