Alexandra Gardens, Cathays Park, Cardiff
Tucked behind City Hall, Alexandra Gardens is a peaceful oasis that explodes into shades of pink every spring. It’s the perfect spot for a lunchtime stroll or a mindful moment on a bench. The cherry trees here are a photographer’s dream – in fact, it’s one of the top Instagrammable locations in Cardiff. Think petals fluttering in the breeze, golden light, and a feeling like you’re miles away from the busy city centre. Bliss!

Add a little Victorian charm to your blossom spotting at Victoria Park. This pretty green space is a family favourite, and come cherry blossom season, the park is sprinkled with delicate blooms that make it even more enchanting. Bring a blanket, grab a coffee from the nearby cafés, and enjoy the view!

This beautiful historic house and its surrounding gardens come alive in cherry blossom season, with soft pink blooms framing the house. Llandaff Fields, Cardiff
Cherry Blossoms Season is not complete without a wander through Llandaff Fields. These sprawling parklands burst into colour in the springtime, with cherry blossom trees lining the paths and forming a soft, pink canopy overhead. Locals love this spot for jogging, dog walks, and impromptu picnics under the blooms.

Thompson’s Park, Canton, Cardiff
One of Cardiff’s oldest parks, Thompson’s Park offers a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle. It’s a favourite of mine for its winding paths, peaceful vibes, and – you guessed it – cherry trees in full bloom come spring. It’s one of the top spots for a picnic in Cardiff.

Pontypool Park, Torfaen
Feeling adventurous? Head a little further afield to Pontypool Park. During cherry blossom season, the park’s pathways are transformed into enchanted tunnels of pink petals. It’s like walking through a storybook! If you’re into photography, this is one place you won’t want to miss.

Dyffryn Gardens, St Nicholas
Dyffryn Gardens is the place to be from March to May, thanks to their annual Festival of Blossom. Expect blossom-themed events, family-friendly activities, and plenty of cherry trees in bloom! Whether you’re after a peaceful walk or an afternoon of flower spotting, The National Trust site has you covered.

Tredegar House & Gardens, Newport
A visit to the National Trusts Tredegar House is always a treat, but during cherry blossom season, it is magical. The Orchard Garden is especially lovely, with cherry trees dotted around, creating perfect photo ops. Stroll through the three formal gardens, breathe in the spring air, and pretend you’ve stepped into your own period drama!

If you’re after the ultimate spring vibes, Bryn Meadows is calling your name. Book a spa day, sip bubbly, and relax beneath their beautiful cherry blossom trees. It’s giving serious holiday feels – no passport required!
Bute Park, Cardiff
We have to talk about Bute Park. A special planting project saw dozens of cherry blossom trees added here as part of the Sakura Cherry Tree Project – a nod to the 150-year friendship between the UK and Japan. The tree planting ceremony was on 26 January 2022, and one hundred and twenty trees were planted.
These trees are still young but already add to the park’s incredible beauty. Enjoy one of the best places in Cardiff for a springtime wander along the Taff Trail.

Cherry Blossom Trees Information
Here’s all the cherry blossom flower information and fun facts you need to know:
- Season: Typically late March to early May, depending on the weather. Here in South Wales, April is usually the sweet spot for peak bloom – but as we all know, Welsh weather likes to keep us guessing!
- Best time for photos: Early morning or golden hour (just before sunset). The soft, golden light makes those pink petals pop. Plus, you’ll avoid the crowds. Win-win!
- Symbolism: In Japan, cherry blossoms (or Sakura, as they’re known) symbolise renewal, hope, and the fleeting beauty of life. They only bloom for a short time, reminding us to embrace the present moment.
- The Petal Blizzard: If you time it just right, you can witness a petal blizzard – when a gentle breeze sends thousands of cherry blossom petals fluttering through the air like confetti. It’s pure magic and totally Instagram-worthy.
- Sakura Snacks: Over in Japan, cherry blossoms aren’t just for looking at! They use them in food and drink, too – think Sakura lattes, Sakura mochi, and even pickled cherry blossoms in tea.
- How long do they bloom? Most cherry blossoms only last about two weeks once they’ve bloomed, and a big gust of wind (or heavy rain… thanks, Wales!) can shorten that even more. Catch them while you can!
- Not all cherry blossoms are pink! Some varieties are white, pale pink, or even a darker pink, depending on the type of tree. So, if you see different shades during your springtime adventures, now you know why.
