Exploring Plymouth’s street food would be incomplete without sampling some of its local delicacies. Head to the Barbican, where traditional fish and chips reign supreme. Savour the crispy batter and flaky white fish, served piping hot with a side of golden chips – a quintessential British treat. While you can enjoy it in most of the pubs in Plymouth, my go-to spot is The Harbour Seafood Restaurant & Takeaway.
Plymouth’s pasty shops offer a taste of local tradition. These golden parcels of pastry, known as pasties, have a rich history dating back to the 1600s. Traditionally filled with meat and diced vegetables or cheese and onion, they have been a favourite among locals for centuries. Or more modern flavours like lamb and mint, spiced cauliflower or chicken masala. Jacka Bakery on Southside Street is the oldest bakery in the UK. They are said to have supplied the Pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower to America, adding a touch of historical significance to your culinary experience.

- Maurish: Discover Mauritian cuisine. There’s traditional chicken and slow-cooked beef curry, sausages and spicy tomato sauce, dumplings, prawn fritters and flatbread.
- SoulFood Vendor: The dishes are inspired by Jamaica’s vibrant street food scene, including jerk chicken, goat curry, beef patties, and hot wings. They are all served with passion and a good dollop of reggae on the side!

Food Festival Royal William Yard
At the Royal William Yard, a historic naval yard turned vibrant dining destination, foodies can indulge in a melting pot of culinary experiences. At these restaurants in Plymouth, you can find local foods like dressed lobster, crab sandwiches or cream tea.
The RWY Good Food & Craft Market is held on the first Sunday every month from 10 am until 3 pm. Here, you can purchase the freshest local produce and unique arts and crafts from the South West’s top suppliers and artisan makers.
The best way to reach Royal William Yard is to hop on and off the new Barbican, Royal William Yard and Mount Edgcumbe ferry service, which links the three iconic destinations on the water. The seasonal timetable runs daily from April to October and at weekends between November and early December.
Plymouth Street Food Festival 2024
This street food celebration brings together 200 local vendors, chefs, and over 140,000 foodies. The festival showcases Plymouth’s vibrant street food scene with live cooking demonstrations, workshops, and tasting sessions. The Street Food Festival Plymouth will be at Central Park over the bank holiday weekend from Friday 3rd to Monday 6th May 2024. Tickets are £2 per adult, and the ticket purchase includes a reusable cup.
The team behind it is from my hometown of Cardiff. Street Food Warehouse hosts eleven street food festivals across the UK, as well as foodie markets and private events. They are known for Teras at the Wales Millennium Centre, the Cornwall Street Food Festival, the Swansea Street Food Festival, and the Exeter Street Food Festival.
Plymouth Flavour Fest 2024
At events like Flavour Fest, Plymouth’s annual celebration of food and drink, sustainability takes centre stage. The family friendly event allows visitors to sample delicious dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients while learning about initiatives to reduce food waste and promote environmental responsibility. It’s the Southwest’s largest free food and drink festival, held in the city centre from 31 May to 2 June 2024.
