2. Wembury Beach
Wembury Beach, located just a short drive from Plymouth, is renowned for its natural beauty and is part of a National Marine Conservation Area. The beach is well known as one of the best beaches in the UK for exploring rock pools. You’ll find limpets, crabs, fish, sea scorpions and starfish. The clifftop climbs are ideal for walkers, as it is part of the South West Coast Path. If you want to swim, it is best to visit during low tide. It’s also one of the dog friendly beaches near Plymouth, so you’ll often see them playing in the sand and surf.

3. Bovisand Beach
Plymouth to Bovisand Beach is a sandy haven about 7 miles away (about a 25-minute drive). It’s a favourite among locals and visitors alike, known for its golden sands and clear waters. It is one of the best beaches near Plymouth for families, and it’s actually hailed as one of the best family beaches in Devon.
When the tide is out, there is a large expanse of flat sand, ideal for ball games and building sandcastles. At the same time, the water is perfect for swimming and snorkelling. On a good day, you can see across to Plymouth Sound. Just bear in mind that the only way to get on and off the beach is via steps and a path that some might find steep.

4. Mothecombe Beach

A little further afield, about 20 miles from Plymouth, Bigbury-on-Sea is worth the drive. This expansive sandy beach is perfect for all kinds of beach activities. The exciting feature about Bigbury on Sea is that a causeway joins it to the iconic Burgh Island. However, if the tide is in, you can hitch a ride on the sea tractor. It is famed for its links to Agatha Christie, and the art-deco hotel was once a haunt for pirates and smugglers.
In addition, the sandy beach is dotted with rock pools, and those into water sports will love the waves. If you want to try bodyboarding, surfing, windsurfing or kite-surfing, there are hire facilities on the beach.

The flat sand is excellent for walking or jogging, whereas the constant swell keeps surfers happy. Please note the beach is reached by steep paths and steps that wind down between the rocks and vegetation. Meaning they are never crowded.

7. Portwinkle Beach

It’s an excellent choice for a quieter beach experience. The old fish cellars are now holiday cottages, and the quaint harbour is now calm.
Portwinkle links up with Finnygook Beach. This sand and shale beach is popular with local surfers and rock poolers. Short, steep paths descend to both beaches.

As one of the sandy beaches near Plymouth, it sits directly in front of the old town. Watch fishing boats pass throughout the day and those ferrying passengers to the nearby village of Polperro.
The location is great for swimming, especially for little ones. Build sandcastles or walk along the promenade. A second, rocky beach can also be accessed. It is ideal for getting away from the crowds.

- Facilities:The village is pedestrianised, so the walk from the car park takes 10-15 minutes. You may want to avoid burdening yourself with too much to carry. The beach is close to the shops, toilets and refreshments.
9. Bantham Beach
Bantham Beach has won awards from the Marine Conversation Society and has converted Blue Flag status. The sea is shallow and safe for paddling, making it one of the child friendly beaches near Plymouth. Surfers also love it here as it caters to all levels. The mellow waves are fantastic for beginners. Meanwhile, where the River Avon meets the sea, more confident surfers can test the unique rips.

- Facilities: Lifeguards from May to September, toilets and parking.
10. Cawsand Beach
Cawsand and Kingsand are twin seafront villages. Both are east-facing sand and shingle beaches that are sheltered and reveal good rock pools at low tide. They are quaint and peaceful, ideal for a relaxing day by the sea. The beaches offer fantastic views of the ships coming and going.
Boats can be hired, and there is a slipway from the beach. The 17th-century fishing villages are renowned for their smuggling activities. The streets are narrow and twisting with pretty pastel-coloured houses.

11. Talland Bay
Talland Bay is a quiet beach between Looe and Polperro. You can walk to it via the South West Coast Path. It’s an Area of Outstanding Beauty and a Heritage Coast.
The sandy beach is ideal for swimming when the tide is in. When the tide is out, you can see a boiler from a French steam trawler, Marguerite, which ran into the rocks in 1922. You’ll also be able to explore the rock pools and spot sea creatures, from hermit crabs to suckerfish.

12. Readymoney Cove
Readymoney Cove is sheltered by cliffs close to the mouth of the River Fowey. The sandy, secluded beach overlooks the village of Polruan. It is popular with wild swimmers, and a slipway is available for SUPs, Kayaks and paddleboarders.
There is also a small café and gift shop, where you can get a freshly made hot drink. The mugs are plastic and reusable, collected in a bucket after you’ve finished. Bathrooms are also available. St Catherine’s Castle is also accessible from the beach. It was built by King Henry VIII around 1530 and was designed to defend Fowey Harbour from the French invasion. You will also be rewarded with beautiful views of the Fowey Estuary.
