However, amidst all the fun, it’s crucial not to overlook the importance of sun protection. In this article, we’ll discuss three essential tips to ensure you stay properly protected from the sun as you enjoy the best of what Cardiff has to offer this summer.

Sunburn and UV exposure in the UK

The sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can penetrate the skin in all kinds of weather, leading to sunburn and potential long-term damage. According to Cancer Research UK, the rates of melanoma skin cancer have been rising steadily over the past few decades. In fact, death rates from melanoma have increased by 219% in men, compared with a rise of 76% in women since 1973.

Yet, among the 16,000 annual cases of melanoma each year, almost 9 in 10 cases are preventable. Michelle Mitchell, the chief executive of Cancer Research UK, thus comments that, “These figures showing that six people die of melanoma every day in the UK really drive home the importance of sun safety.”

Tips for sun protection

Getting sunburnt just once every two years can triple your risk of skin cancer. Thankfully, there are easy steps we can take to protect ourselves from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Apply sunscreen regularly

In an interview with BBC, Cardiff-based consultant Dr Hywel Dafydd warns about the long-term danger of sunburn. He notes that, “Over the past two weeks we have seen 30 children asking for help after burning in the sun.” As Wales continues to expect increasing temperatures, experts stress that children should be wearing sun cream that is factor 30 or higher. Purchase from reputable brands such as Coola or Malibu Sun and reapply every two hours as you enjoy outdoor activities, such as picnicking in spots like Cardiff’s beautiful Victoria Park.

Wear eye protection

Besides protecting your skin, you also need to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Choose sunglasses with lenses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays to shield your eyes and the delicate skin around them. A useful tip is to purchase sunglasses from reputable brands such as Ray-Ban and Oakley. Stores like Glasses Direct also allow you to block UV light by adding sunglasses tints to any frame. Otherwise, you can look for sunglasses with the “CE” mark, which indicates compliance with European standards for UV protection, to wear as you stroll along Cardiff’s waterfront area and the stunning Cardiff Bay Barrage.

Seek shade

While enjoying the city’s summer attractions, it’s crucial to seek shade during the peak sun hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. When the sun is at its strongest, find shelter under trees, umbrellas, or covered areas. Additionally, wearing protective clothing can help cover your arms and legs. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting garments such as summer dresses from Urban Outfitters or House of Sunny. You can easily pair this with a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun off your face while you enjoy the warm weather at sights like Cardiff’s beautiful Roath Botanic Garden.

Remember, sunburn and UV damage can occur even on cloudy or cooler days, so make sun protection a priority in your daily routine. By following these sun protection tips, you can enjoy the Cardiff summer to the fullest while safeguarding your skin from harmful UV rays.
