I found a week’s stay in a lodge in Gunnislake in Cornwall for a recent family staycation. It is in the countryside but is an excellent base for exploring North Cornwall and South Devon. Mum and dad, who were coming with us, were unsure. However, after showing them this list, they were excited about the things to do near Gunnislake.
On a recent staycation, I got to visit another National Trust property, Cotehele Estate, near St Dominick in Cornwall. It’s easy to see why it is one of the most popular properties in their collection. Usually, our visits elsewhere in the NT collection are for an hour or so, but we were here for hours. There is so much to see and history to soak up. So, here’s everything you need to know and my subjective opinion about Cotehele House Cornwall Review.
Westbury Court Garden is one of those National Trust properties that feels rather different from the grand houses and sweeping landscapes you might expect. Tucked away in Westbury-on-Severn in Gloucestershire, this beautifully restored garden is England’s only restored 17th-century Dutch-style water garden, with long canals, clipped topiary, a circular pool, productive kitchen gardens and some wonderfully old trees. There’s a huge sense of calm here. It’s the sort of place where you can take your time, wander along the water and actually stop to look at what’s growing. There are some fascinating details to discover too, from the 400-year-old holm oak to the Tall Pavilion and the garden’s carefully recreated historic planting. If you’re looking for a peaceful National Trust garden in Gloucestershire, particularly one with a bit of history and something genuinely different to see, Westbury Court Garden is well worth a visit.

If you are after destinations inspiration, Tyntesfield House and Gardens is a National Trust property in North Somerset. Some people believe that Tyntesfield is in Bristol, as it is so close to the border. The large Victorian country house has extensive gardens and parklands, which I visited last week.

Tredegar House is one of South Wales’ most impressive historic houses and a must-visit National Trust property in Newport, near Cardiff. This magnificent 17th-century red-brick mansion was home to the Morgan family, later Lords Tredegar, for more than 500 years. It is now one of the finest examples of a Restoration-period country house in Britain. Inside, you can explore richly decorated rooms and discover the fascinating story of the Morgans, including their connection to the Newport Rising and Chartist movement. Outside, the house is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens and extensive parkland, with peaceful walking routes, a lake, play areas and plenty of space to explore. Plus its fascinating Welsh history, Tredegar House makes a great day out, whether you’re visiting for the house itself or simply looking for somewhere to enjoy the outdoors.
