The Trend of Travellers Paying More for Premium Trips

As a traveller, it’s easy to see that a shift has taken place, and it’s one of the most defining gifts in the travel community and industry that’s happened in decades. More and more travellers, even those who might not previously have positioned or seen themselves as “luxury travellers”, are splashing out in a new way: high-end trips to opulent destinations offering an incredible level of comfort and customisation. This isn’t just a trend that saw increased and changed spending from people who were already travelling in this luxury market space, but an expansion of the secret to include a new customer base. There’s a contradiction here, though: do you see it? New customers are coming into a luxury space when their income hasn’t necessarily risen to the level of luxury travel ability…so how does that work out?

The Rise of Premium Travel Spending

As we’ve watched worldwide travel bounce back since the pandemic, it has improved in a lot of major travel economies. Take Australia, for example: as the country has seen a demand for private aviation, more international routes and more luxurious accommodation options have risen, it has risen to meet that demand and brought in a high increase in international travel dollars. The rise in demand for private jet travel started when the pandemic was at its deadliest, with many people still needing to move from place to place but looking for a way to be safe and comfortable while they did it. This demand remained, with more and more travellers’ eyes being opened to the apex of comfort, service and seamless travel experiences that the private aviation industry offers. In 2026, however, it had evolved to be less about need and more about desire, and the rest of the luxury travel industry quickly cottoned onto that fact. This particular rising tide has lifted all ships in the luxury travel industry and created a new way to travel.

Fewer but Better

Brands and individuals who were already in the luxury space may not have noticed the change in trends so much, as little has changed for them, but many of those only entering the luxury travel space now have a new mindset about the indulgence of this kind of travel: they don’t do it constantly, but they do it WELL when they get the chance. The concept of “fewer, better things” has had an impact in more than one way, and given previously non-luxury focused travellers a way into king-sized beds and Egyptian cotton, fine dining, boutique stays and private, high-end travel solutions that they never knew had been there all along. On the higher end of wealth and income, travellers are still taking regular breaks at a very VERY first class level, but those who aren’t able to commit at such a high level are taking luxury trips maybe once or twice a year instead.

So…Why Are More Travellers Spending More on Their Travels?

The pandemic has been over for a long time, so why has this trend remained? Let’s break it down and take a look at the fine print.

Experiences Worth the Cost

Instead of just choosing a fancy hotel, doing some high-end brand shopping and maybe going out to a gourmet dinner or two (all very valid, HIGHLY enjoyable experiences, make no mistake), luxury travellers are choosing authentic, adventurous and immersive experiences that they feel give them much more bang for their buck and create lasting memories instead. This move towards the experience being the prestige rather than the prestige of where you stay or eat being the prestige of the trip has opened up a whole new world of choices for these travellers. Experiences like learning to cook authentic local cuisine with the locals, taking the time to learn about tradition rather than just visiting traditional occasions on a tour, visiting a destination for wellness workshops…things like this are experiences that can be life-changing and are certainly worth the luxury cost.

Personalisation is the New Black

Luxury travel allows for much more personalisation. A private jet flight, for example, offers you the chance to take off on your own schedule rather than a commercial airline and land at an airport or strip that gets you as close to your terminal destination as possible, rather than being convenient for a commercial airline. Premium travel companies give you the option to choose bespoke itineraries over something someone in an office somewhere decided might be nice, meaning that every experience you have is one that you chose for yourself and your own personal enjoyment. In a world where we can see whatever we want online within a few seconds and where we can see what trends are taking over just by looking at our social media feed, personalisation is setting the new standard.

The Growth of Niche Travel

Think about the reasons that people take their luxury trips these days. To escape the day-to-day? Certainly! But also for specific experiences. In some cases, extremely specific. Noctourism is a rising trend that includes all things nighttime: night safaris, stargazing, etc. There wellness travel, which was mentioned briefly earlier: yoga teacher training, spending time in eco tourist locations such as working farms, visiting sacred cultural locations to pay respect or work towards spiritual enlightenment. Sure, the beds are extra comfortable, and the food is unbelievable, but people are travelling for something, not just some things.

Here to Stay

More people paying more for travel is here to stay. This trend is not going anywhere anytime soon, and frankly, it’s exciting to see so many travellers taking control of their own travel experiences! Have you got any fun travel slates for this year?
