Waverley Excursions Penarth

For Father’s Day this year, we treated our parents (and our adventure-loving pup Ivan) to a trip on The Waverley Paddle Steamer, cruising from Penarth to Ilfracombe and back again. And, it wasn’t my first time! Apparently, I’ve been aboard Waverley cruises to Weston-super-Mare as a child, for a day at the seaside.

Here’s how our day with Waverley Excursions unfolded – plus some handy tips for your own trip.

Getting to Penarth Pier

Our day kicked off bright and early in sunny South Wales. We parked up at Cliff Parade Free Car Park – just a 15-minute gentle downhill stroll from Penarth Pier, the pickup and drop-off point. At 9am, it was still peaceful, but the seafront was already brimming with summery vibes and the promise of a good day.

We grabbed drinks from Coffi Co, and although we had planned ahead, we were tempted by the buzz of the pier café too. A short queue had already formed for the paddle ship Waverley, and there was a definite sense of excitement in the air.

Boarding the Waverley

When the paddle boat steamer arrived, complete with gleaming white paint, twin red funnels and all the charm of a bygone era, it felt like stepping straight into a vintage postcard.

Boarding was smooth, and we made a beeline for the top deck to bag the best seats. A word to the wise: pack suncream! We were blessed with sunshine, and even though I had sunscreen on, my knees got burned.

The ship had already collected guests from Clevedon, and it was lovely seeing families, couples, and curious first-time sailors all ready for a day on the waves.

Life Onboard the Waverley

Whether you’re a history buff, scenery-seeker or just along for the ride, there’s plenty to enjoy. The onboard café, restaurant, bar, and souvenir shop mean you’re well looked after.

The souvenir shop is filled with nautical bits and bobs – magnets, mugs, fleeces, fudge, and even Waverley-branded shortbread. And don’t miss a peek at the engine room – it’s mesmerising to see the steam-powered mechanics in action.

Operated by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and listed by National Historic Ships, the last seagoing paddle steamer is not just a vessel, but a living piece of history. Sailing on this ship is a truly magical experience, connecting you to a bygone era of maritime glory.

Don’t Forget a Drink!

Water-to-Go bottles are a game-changer for travellers, hikers, and dog owners who love the great outdoors. These reusable bottles come with advanced 3-in-1 filtration technology, removing up to 99.9999% of contaminants from any non-saltwater source. That means whether you’re exploring Ilminster’s countryside or simply out on a long dog walk, you’ll always have access to clean, safe drinking water.

Hello, Ilfracombe!

We docked in Ilfracombe at 1pm, with six hours to explore before our return sailing. There’s lots to see and do:

Things to Do in Ilfracombe

  • Verity Statue – a striking sculpture by Damien Hirst that’s hard to miss on the harbourfront. In fact, it’s the first thing you’ll see when you arrive.
  • Tunnels Beaches – historic hand-carved tunnels leading to a tidal bathing pool and a unique beach setting.
  • Ilfracombe Aquarium – small but fascinating, great for kids or anyone curious about local marine life.
  • South West Coast Path – stretch your legs on a cliffside ramble with epic sea views.
  • Woolacombe Beach – Woolacombe recently topped the list of the best beaches in the UK
  • Watermouth Castle – explore the castle’s enchanting gardens and enjoy the theme park rides, exhibitions and live performances.
  • Cafes and Restaurants – think scones with clotted cream. I highly recommend Hele Corn Mill & Tea Rooms. There’s also pasties and fresh seafood. Check out this foodies guide to Ilfracombe.
  • Proper Pubs – whether you want a refreshing pint or classic pub grub, there’s plenty to choose from, including dog-friendly pubs.

The Return Cruise & Dolphin Spotting

As the afternoon wore on, the wind picked up and the temperature dipped. I had popped leggings and a hoody in my bag, and this was enough to keep me warm. However, if you feel the cold, you may want to wear a coat or add warmer layers.

But just when we thought it couldn’t get better, dolphins appeared! Leaping and playing alongside the boat, they put on a show that left us grinning from ear to ear.

Is the Waverley Dog Friendly?

Absolutely! Our dog Ivan was made to feel like a VIP. From the moment we picked up his hand-written boarding pass at the Purser’s Office, we knew this company knows how to welcome four-legged passengers: Taking Your Dog on The Waverley – What You Need To Know

There’s a dog water station onboard and lots of outdoor space for them to enjoy the fresh air. Ivan made himself at home under our bench and cwtched up for most of the boat trip. On the return cruise, he was a bit restless for the last hour, so he decided to befriend every single person with snacks. Classic Ivan.

Dogs are just £5 each (make sure to book in advance online), and it’s a small price to pay for their tail-wagging memories.

The Waverley: Worth the Voyage? Absolutely.

From boarding at Penarth Pier to spotting dolphins off the coast, our day with Waverley Excursions was unforgettable. It was one of the best days out and experiences I’ve had in a long time! A true highlight of 2025!

Waverley Penarth Pier at Night

The company has done an amazing job preserving the charm of the paddle steamer. Whether you’re travelling with friends or family, it’s an experience well worth booking.

We laughed, we sipped tea (and a few pints!), watched the coastline, and we made the kind of memories that stay with you long after the salt has been rinsed out of your hair.

So, if you’re after a fun, unique day out with vintage flair and sea breezes, you know what to do. Pack your camera and hop aboard The Waverley!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Waverley was launched in 1946 to replace the original Waverley, which was sunk during the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. She was built as a passenger excursion vessel for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) and has since become a much-loved part of British maritime heritage. In 1974, she was famously gifted to the nation for just £1 and is now operated by a charity for the enjoyment of the public.

The Waverley is owned by Waverley Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, a registered charity. She is operated on behalf of the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and run by Waverley Excursions Ltd.

She was built on the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland, by A. & J. Inglis of Pointhouse, a famous Scottish shipbuilder.

The Waverley measures around 240 feet (73 metres) in length.

She can reach speeds of up to 18 knots (around 20.7 mph or 33.3 km/h), which is pretty impressive for a steam-powered vessel!

As of 2025, the Waverley is 79 years old, having been launched in 1946. She has undergone several restorations to keep her ship-shape.

Waverley can carry up to 860 passengers, although actual capacity may vary depending on the route and event.

She has multiple departure points depending on the time of year, including Glasgow, the Clyde coast, South West Wales, Bristol Channel, Penarth, Clevedon, Ilfracombe, and other coastal towns across the UK. There are full days and evening cruises.

Her cruise routes include scenic and historic destinations such as the Scottish Western Isles, Ilfracombe, Lundy Island, and along the South Coast and Bristol Channel. The Waverley Excursions Timetable offers full details.

Smoking and vaping are not permitted anywhere on board, including outdoor decks. However, there is a designated smoking area on the outside promenade deck. Passengers are asked to be mindful of the wind direction.

Yes, you’re welcome to bring your own food and snacks, although the onboard café and restaurant offer a range of food and drink options if you fancy a treat.
