In the picturesque coastal town of Ilfracombe, North Devon, Hele Mill & Tea Rooms is in Hele Bay, a 20-minute walk from Ilfracombe Harbour. The historic attraction, dating back to the 16th Century, seamlessly combines the charm of a bygone era with the warmth of traditional hospitality. Take a walk on the beach, feel the sand between your toes, or take a dip in the sea, and afterwards enjoy a cream tea.
When it comes to finding the best places to eat in Ilfracombe, The Mill Tea Rooms is at the top of my list. What sets this Devon tea rooms apart is its commitment to providing an unforgettable experience. My regular readers will know that I seek places to eat that make their own food, use local products, care about what they serve, and are affordable. All of the boxes were ticked here, and so many more!
Overall, my experience at Hele Corn Mill & Tea Room was enchanting. From the moment I arrived, I was swept away by the mill’s rustic charm and warm hospitality. Plus, one of the best cream teas I’ve ever tasted!

Pros:
1. Charming Atmosphere: Hele Corn Mill & Tea Room offers a unique dining experience in a picturesque setting surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of water running through the historic mill, which adds to the overall charm of the establishment.
2. Homemade Delights: The tea room serves a delightful array of homemade treats, including freshly baked scones and cakes using stone ground flour from the water mill. Or, if their flour is not right for the recipe, they use organic flour from other local suppliers. These homemade delicacies are made with care and attention to detail, offering a taste of traditional Devonshire cuisine.
3. Locally Sourced Ingredients: The tea room sources ingredients locally whenever possible, including wild garlic from their garden, ensuring freshness and quality in their dishes. This commitment to using locally sourced produce adds an authentic touch to the dining experience.
4. Traditional Cream Teas: The tea room is renowned for its traditional cream teas, which feature light and fluffy scones served with clotted cream and jam. This quintessentially British treat is a menu highlight and will satisfy even the most discerning palate.

2. Weather Dependency: As the tea room is situated in a rural setting, dining outdoors is subject to weather conditions. There is undercover seating, but rain or strong winds may limit the enjoyment of outdoor seating, particularly during the colder months.
3. Accessibility: The mill’s historic nature may present challenges for visitors with mobility issues or disabilities. While efforts have been made to ensure accessibility, navigating the uneven terrain may be difficult for some individuals.
4. Dietary: At least one gluten-free cake is always available. They also try to bake gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan scones daily, but if you want to guarantee this, it’s best to call ahead. Other dietary requirements can be catered for if ordered in advance.
The Old Mill Tea Room Ilfracombe
Upon arriving at Hele Corn Mill, you’ll be struck by its idyllic setting. Surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of rushing water, the mill exudes an aura of tranquillity that is rare to find in today’s fast-paced world.
The first stop is to step inside the mill. You’ll be greeted by ancient milling machinery meticulously preserved and maintained. It also offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich agricultural heritage, with stories of the previous owners and workers.
The heart of the establishment lies in its charming tea room, with a delightful array of homemade treats and refreshments, from traditional cream teas served with freshly baked scones to a heartier afternoon tea. The scones and cakes are made from the flour ground in the mill. The menu caters to all tastes and preferences.
Tasting the Menu
During my visit, I had the pleasure of sampling three of their signature scones. They exceeded all expectations. (There was even a big burly bloke on the table next to us, who, in his own words, “had been dragged there by his wife”, and even he said it was the best scone he’d ever eaten. He also purchased some to take away!)
One of the standouts was the savoury cheese and wild garlic scone. Infused with the rich flavours of tangy cheese and aromatic wild garlic – picked from their garden – these scones offer a savoury alternative that is as indulgent as it is satisfying. The combination of sharp cheese and earthy garlic creates a harmonious balance of flavours that tantalises the taste buds with each bite. Paired with cream cheese and a sweet onion chutney, these scones are perfect for those seeking a savoury treat to accompany their afternoon tea.
For those who prefer a more traditional option, the tea room also offers classic split scones that are light, fluffy, and simply irresistible. These are like bread, made with yeast and left to prove before cooking. Served warm and slathered with clotted cream and jam, these scones embody the timeless charm of a quintessential English tea time. And remember, as you’re in Devon, it’s cream first, then jam. (In Cornwall, it’s jam first, then cream)
For those with a sweet tooth, the fruit scones are a must-try. Bursting with plump raisins, these scones are a decadent delight. The sweetness of the fruit mingles beautifully with the buttery richness of the scone. The scones were light and fluffy, the clotted cream was luxuriously thick, and the jam added the perfect touch of sweetness.
When all of these were paired with a pot of freshly brewed tea, it was a truly indulgent experience that left me craving more. So, we shared a slice of cake, too! It was fun to hear that the miller and his wife have different opinions on the thickness of the flour. The chocolate cake I tried was made with coarser flour, leaving an interesting bite to the cake. It was soft, rich, sweet, and tasty.
Cream Tea Ilfracombe
What sets Hele Corn Mill & Tea Room apart from other establishments is its commitment to preserving history while embracing sustainability. The mill uses traditional milling methods powered by a water wheel fed by the adjacent stream. Hele Mill Cottage
The adjacent Hele Mill Cottage offers a charming accommodation option for those looking to extend their visit. Dating back to the 17th Century, these traditional Devonshire cottages provide a cosy retreat. With exposed beams, a stone fireplace, and quaint furnishings, staying here feels like stepping back in time while enjoying modern comforts.
Both The Miller’s Cottage and Tollgate Cottage feature comfortable bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a cosy living area, making them the perfect home away from home for couples or small families. Guests can enjoy leisurely walks along the nearby coastal paths, explore the quaint village of Ilfracombe, or simply relax in the cottage’s peaceful garden. The Miller’s Cottage is dog-friendly, too.

There’s no parking on-site. However, there’s a large pay-and-display car park on Beach Road near Hele Bay Cafe and to the left of Hele Bay Pub. It’s a 5-minute walk.

Hele Corn Mill opening times are seasonal: from Easter to October, between 11 am and 5 pm. However, being a family business, there are some dates when the mill will be closed. It’s best to double-check before visiting: opening hours.

Scones, cakes, and drinks are available to buy individually. Also on the Hele Corn Mill Tea Room Menu is an Afternoon Tea, which includes a sandwich, crisps, a scone, a slice of cake, and unlimited tea or coffee for £15 per person. I stayed at the Dilkhusa Grand Hotel in Ilfracombe, part of the Compass Hospitality Group. Housed in a historic Victorian building just a short walk from the picturesque seafront and harbour. There is a small car park at the back of the hotel, where you can book a spot for a small fee per night or pay and display parking on the road. Ivan was also made to feel welcome and offered treats at Reception. It was the perfect spot for a relaxing seaside getaway.
