The Bell at Broadway in Somerset isn’t just any country pub – it’s a charming 17th-century inn with bags of character, beautifully renovated rooms, and the kind of food that’ll have you planning your return before you’ve even finished dessert. From the moment we arrived, it felt like home – relaxed, friendly, and full of locals chatting away like old friends. Oh, and our dog Ivan? He was living his best life, with head scratches, cheeky treats, and being called by name by the end of night one.

Our original plan for a two-night stay at The Bell at Broadway was to explore the area and dine out at different places each night. However, the moment we tasted the food at The Bell, we were hooked. Both evenings were spent indulging in delicious, flavour-packed dishes that left us in awe. Whether you’re a foodie, a dog-lover, or simply seeking a memorable countryside escape, The Bell at Broadway promises an experience that’s hard to resist.
The Bell Broadway
The Bell Inn Broadway is the oldest pub in the area, dating back to 1640. It was renovated just before lockdown and has been restored to capture the character of the 17th-century Inn.
There’s a real community feel here. Locals mix in with weekenders, and the staff chat to everyone like they’ve known you for years. We got some great tips about where to visit, local walks, farmers markets and top places to eat. It’s relaxed, friendly, and refreshingly unpretentious. Ivan got many scratches behind the ears, lots of treats, and was called by name by the end of the night.
What Did We Eat at The Bell in Broadway
We actually ended up eating in the pub both nights – The Bell at Broadway Menu was that good. It’s full of tempting choices, and everything is beautifully presented without being too fancy or faffy. You can tell they care about the food here.
On our first night, we sat in the beer garden and nibbled on a bowl of Mixed Olives, served with soft Baker’s Bread and a glug of golden olive oil. Simple but satisfying, it was the kind of snack that gets you properly excited for what’s to come. It was perfect with my glass of rosé.
For mains, I couldn’t resist the Porco Pizza – tomato, mozzarella, salami, nduja, pepperoni, Cotto ham and Italian sausage. It’s a meat-lovers dream and an unapologetic slice of indulgence. Big flavours, bold toppings – the kind of pizza you remember.
My partner opted for the Locally Sourced Lamb Rump – a hearty plate featuring a beautifully layered pressed potato terrine, creamy savoy cabbage, tender stem broccoli and a glossy red wine jus. We were both practically scraping our plates clean. Honestly, if it had been socially acceptable to lick them, we might’ve done it.
On the Second Night
The next evening, I ordered the Somerset Duck Breast; oh my days, it was a showstopper. Juicy and tender, the duck was perfectly pink and came with salt-roasted beetroot, a velvety sweet potato and orange purée, and braised red cabbage that brought the whole dish to life. It was rich, colourful, and ridiculously tasty – every bite was a little explosion of autumnal goodness.
Meanwhile, my other half gambled on the Pollo Calzone, and what a wild card it was. Stuffed with Thai chicken yellow curry, potato, mozzarella, onion, and carrot, it sounded bonkers on paper but worked so well. It was sweet, spicy, gooey, and golden – a true comfort food hug disguised as a pizza pocket.
It’s no surprise The Bell has earned a bit of a reputation – not just for its food, but for being one of the top dog friendly pubs in Somerset. Expect to spot a few wagging tails snoozing under the tables while you tuck in. Honestly, if you love good food and four-legged friends, you’re in the right place.
We left with full bellies, happy hearts, and a few snaps and video clips to share from our account. Because trust us: when the food’s this lush, you want to show it off.
The Bell at Broadway Ilminster Menu
The Bell at Broadway menu prices are a little pricier than usual, but you do get quality, fresh and local ingredients. Pizzas are between £14.50 and £19.50, whilst main menu items are between £17.50 and £26.
Staying at the Bell Inn Broadway
The Bell at Broadway offers a handful of boutique-style bedrooms – all thoughtfully decorated and full of character. Dogs are allowed in all the rooms, which means no being shoved into the ‘dog room’ out back. Ilminster is only (just over) 90 minutes from Cardiff – our home.
We stayed on a Friday and Saturday night at the beginning of April – the perfect time of year for cherry blossoms, warm evenings, and countryside strolls. Whether you’re searching for a dog-friendly break in Ilminster, a weekend getaway, or just a cracking Sunday roast, this place ticks many boxes. There’s also free parking and free WiFi.
Our double room at The Bell at Broadway was immaculately clean and spacious and thoughtfully equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. From the plush king-size bed with Egyptian cotton bedding to the refreshing rainforest shower, fluffy towels, convenient coffee station, smart TV, and ample floor space for a dog bed, every detail was designed for our comfort. The provision of bottled water replenished daily was a thoughtful touch, especially in the unseasonably warm weather.
Bizarrely, the shower is inside the bedroom, and you can see everything, so it is best to share the room with someone you’re close to. However, it is a good use of space.
We both enjoyed a restful night’s sleep, not only due to the comfortable bed but also because of the serene village ambience. No traffic, no sirens, no shouting… just the tranquil silence of the countryside. Even Ivan seemed to be in a more relaxed state in the morning!
Complimentary Breakfast at The Bell Broadway
Each morning, we sat down to a proper full English (veggie and vegan options are available, too). We were asked to pre-order our selection. You can also pick breakfast rolls or ‘on toast’ options like eggs, beans, and bacon. Alongside this, there’s cereal, yoghurt, and fresh fruit. Dogs can join you for breakfast in the bar and restaurant area.

Would we go again? Absolutely. I’ve already recommended booking The Bell on Broadway to my parents. Prices vary per night, but for your information, we paid £171 for a bed and breakfast for a two-night break in April 2025. Plus, the £91 on food, and let’s not count the drinks!
