That’s right; there’s more to the United Kingdom than the capital cities. Just 15-minutes from Cardiff is the town of Caerphilly, famous for the largest medieval castle in Wales and the second-largest in Europe. There are so many things to do in Caerphilly that you’ll want to stay nearby. Here are all the hotels in Caerphilly.

The town of Caerphilly is just 7 miles from Cardiff. Famous for creating Caerphilly Cheese, even though now there’s only one producer of it in South Wales, it is primarily made in Lancashire, Cheshire and Shropshire. Each year the annual Big Cheese! show is great fun with entertainment, live music and food and drinks stalls that attracts more than 50,000 visitors.
Caerphilly County Borough is the largest in Wales and is primarily rural. The landscape gives a few clues to the coal mines that once covered The Valleys of South Wales. Many of these have been turned into nature reserves, outdoor activity centres or visitor attractions. Check out the things to do in Caerphilly.
Famous faces born in the town include comedian Tommy Cooper, a statue dedicated to him is opposite the castle, Wales International and Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey and Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Amy Dowden.
Visiting Caerphilly Castle
A visit to Caerphilly Castle is a must. It spans over 30 acres and was built to mark English authority in Wales. A stronghold to defend against the Welsh prince Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. Who tried to set the castle on fire – twice. At one point, it belonged to Jasper Tudor, uncle to King Henry VII, before falling into disrepair. The biggest conflict the castle saw was during the English Civil War, leaving the southeast tower leaning at a hazardous angle. In fact, it leans more than the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
There is a fee to go inside. However, CADW members get free entry, plus English Heritage Members who have had a membership for two or more years. If you are considering getting a National Trust Membership or English Heritage Membership, I’ve done the leg work for you.
The English Heritage has over 400 sites across the country, from Stonehenge, Tintagel Castle near Bude (I LOVED my visit here!), Hadrian’s Wall and Dover Castle. You can even take six children (aged under 18) in for free. There’s also free parking, discounts on special events and other members’ rewards.

Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel & Spa
Full disclosure, I used to work here (around five years ago) – and I loved it. It is in a stunning location which overlooks the Brecon Beacons. With a championship golf course, spa, gym, swimming pool, a pub, restaurant and bar, you’ll have everything at your fingertips. The hotel has 42 bedrooms, including two accessible rooms. It is a high-end hotel, but if you can, upgrade to a Junior or Premier suite where you’ll be guaranteed a view, balcony, or terrace. Bryn Meadows is 4* and one of the leading destinations for spa breaks and golf breaks in South Wales. Additionally, there’s free WiFi and free parking. Breakfast is included in all room rates.

Top Tip
If a wedding or large event occurs at Bryn Meadows, such as Royal Ascot Day, it can be challenging to get a room. However, within walking distance (15 minutes) is the Halfway House – a guest house and pub. The B&B Caerphilly is the ideal place to rest your head for the night, and you can still book and enjoy the facilities at Bryn Meadows.

Premier Inn Caerphilly
You know what to expect from a Premier Inn – cheap hotels Caerphilly. There are two hotels; Caerphilly Crossways and Corbetts Lane. Both have free parking and free WiFi. Crossways has a Brewers Fayre restaurant, and Corbetts Lane is next to a Toby Carvery. Bedrooms include double, twin, family and accessible.

Travelodge Caerphilly
Close to the town centre and Caerphilly Castle is the Travelodge. All standard double rooms feature a comfy king-size bed with four plump pillows and a cosy duvet. Additionally, there are twin and accessible rooms. Guests can enjoy a wide variety of food and drink, all within close walking distance. WiFi is free for 30-minutes, or £3 for 24 hours. Add on breakfast on the go or an early or late check-in. It is also a dog friendly hotel, for an additional £20 per pet, per stay.

Llechwen Hall Hotel
Technically, the hotel is in Pontypridd, but Caerphilly County Council services them. It caused a lot of confusion in lockdown when you could only travel in your area. Found on a hill, surrounded by farmland and a 9-hole golf course (separate companies). Llechwen Hall is one of the hotels in Caerphilly with parking. However, you may need to double park if there is a wedding or event. There’s also free WiFi and an on-site restaurant serving local food. It’s also the closest hotel to Llancaiach Fawr, the number one rated visitor attraction in Caerphilly. It’s also dog friendly, with no extra charge (maximum of two per room).

Y Fan | Van Morrison
Y Fan – known locally as Van Morrison – is a Grade II listed Tudor mansion. Substantial restoration has taken place to a very high standard, giving you the feeling of luxury whilst staying here. There are only five bedrooms and all only sleep two guests. Perfect for a romantic night away. Even though it is found in a rural location, it’s only a 15-minute walk from the town centre, giving you the best of both worlds.
Maes Manor
The Georgian country hotel is on nine acres of landscaped gardens. Maes Manor is near the Blackwood area of Caerphilly. It’s close to High Street where you’ll find shops, bars (including a Weatherspoon’s) and restaurants. With 29 bedrooms, free parking, free WiFi and a restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and evening dinners.

Gellihaf House
The boutique hotel, found in Blackwood, is family-owned and run. The expansive and diverse gardens offer you a range of options for outdoor relaxation, making your stay at Gellihaf House truly memorable. The Newbridge Hotel has a restaurant, bar, a shared lounge and a garden. The 3-star hotel has mountain views, free WiFi and free parking. There’s also a pet-friendly room.

Rhymney House Hotel
On the border of Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent, and Newport is the Rhymney House Hotel. As it is Grade II listed, built around 1801 for the manager of the Rhymney Iron Company. It has more of a traditional feel rather than an upscale property. You can expect free parking, WiFi, complimentary breakfast, two bars, and a restaurant at the family-run hotel.

The Parkway Hotel & Spa
The 4* hotel is in extensive green grounds, with 80 ensuite bedrooms, executive and penthouse suites, plus a shepherd’s hut. The Parkway Hotel has leisure facilities, a spa, a restaurant, a bar, and a private resident’s lounge. The restaurant is known for its high food standards and serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, evening a-la-carte dinners and roasts on Sunday. Technically, the hotel is in Cwmbran, but again it is close to the attractions and the Caerphilly border; I had to include it.

Ynysddu Hotel
Another on the border of Caerphilly and Newport is the Ynysddu Hotel. Surrounded by the Sirhowy Country Park, guests love the children’s play area, lockable garage if you want to bring your bike and traditional pub restaurant. The family-run hotel also offers free parking.

Getting around Caerphilly is easy
The Rhymney line runs from Cardiff Central through Caerphilly. The train station in Caerphilly town centre is a short walk to the shops, bars and restaurants as well as Caerphilly Castle. Other stops include Aber, Energlyn and Churchill Park, Llanbradach, Ystrad Mynach, Hengoed, Pengam, Gilfach Fargoed, Bargoed, Brithdir, Tir-Phil, Pontlottyn and Rhymney.
Transport for Wales, who run the trains, has made it even easier to get around. Multiflex has just been introduced, which gives you 12 journeys for the same price as 5 returns. And, who doesn’t want to save money?
Run by Stagecoach, several buses run throughout the day across the region. These buses can also take you further afield to Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Cwmbran and Newport.
There is also plenty of on-street parking and pay and display car parks.
